I will freely admit that despite my best efforts during my youth, I ended up a lot like the old man. Pop taught me young that if I watch my pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves. While neither of us will blink an eye to spend our hard earned dollars on something of quality or pick up the bar tab, he and I are both what you might call, frugal....LOL!!
So, like clockwork before I buy something retail, I always look around for a little bit on Craigslist first. I absolutely hate selling stuff on CL, but I have found some smokin' deals over the years.
I scored a lockable plastic ATV storage box for the old Rancher a couple months ago for $20 and up to that point it was probably my best find. But the find this weekend was a once in a generation, no ****, walk off homer, one hitter quitter!
2016 Vision grills ceramic BBQ with various upgrades and attachments..........FREE!
I had a little bit of windshield time to go get it and I had to replace the side tables, and ordered some new felt, $17. But other than that the thing is cherry. Got it from some Tech guru down in the south bay that couldn't be bothered or didn't know how to fix the couple of things that were weathered and bought a new one.
Thank god for lazy people!!
What's the best score that you guys have come across while scouring the interweb or lurking around at yard sales?

I got my Ranchhand front bumper/grill guard on Craigslist for $40. Some people bought a house and it was left behind.

About a year or so Ago Right In The Middle Of The Ammo GOUGING Era!

I Seen Midway USA Had 375 RUM Ammo for 29.99 a Box!

I Seriously Thought They Had Forgot the 1 in Front of the 29.99!

So I Called Them & The Gal Said That's what They are is 29.99!

Still Leary I ordered 6 Boxes!

You Can't Even Buy Brass For 29.99 in that Caliber!

A Week Later it's here!

I Ordered More!

Got It!

Then I Watched It!

A Week Later it went up to 59.99 a Box!

A Couple of Weeks Later It Went Up To 82.99 A Box!

It's Out Of Stock Now!

I Don't Need Anymore!:D

Had a good one last week. Buy a 1911 45 acp that was marked down for sale plus get a free revolver in a .38 special. I was happy but got the LOOK for the Mrs....

Took a risk last summer on a Bobcat 643 that had sat for 6 or 7 yrs.
A guy bought a property and it was stashed in a corner.
Said he fired it up once and it puked hydraulic fluid all over.
I brought it home and it fired up, it actually had a rebuilt motor installed about 2 yrs before this guy bought the property.
Found a rotted steel hydraulic line.
Replacement line was $130 from Bobcat.
Seat is not even weathered and all controls/lights work.
The purchase price of $300 was a very smart investment.
Doubt I will ever top that one.

maybe 30+ years ago

My BIL has a love for Huskies. So, he answered an ad in a newspaper advertising pups for sale. The lady did not have any pups that caught her eye. But, they started talking and she told him that her husband died about three years ago and she had a hard time disposing of some of her deceased husband's stuff.

Stuff??? Five gun safes full of things. He was a kitchen table FFL and she wanted advice on what the guns were worth. BIL calls me and we start categorizing stuff.

After nearly two days of tagging guns and trying to convince her of the value of certain guns, etc. She says, well I just want them gone. Make me an offer. On the ones we did not make an offer on, she cut the prices in half. All included ammo.

M2 for $1000, transferable. M1, $400, M29, NIB, $400, M57 NIB, $400. Those were the highlights.

A half dozen years of $64 NR OTC deer tags and $80 NR OTC elk tags seemed like a good score...including in that time frame 2 rifle bull elk permits in the breaks for an additional application fee.

Several years of a $25 'Sportsmans License' in Colorado. Elk, deer, turkey, fishing, small game, bear and lion.

Great thread. A lot of great deals come to mind. I’ll have to ponder which is the best.

I never really score on good deals. It seems like most score off of me. I could go on and on about things I screwed up on. I sometimes have a problem with patience.

One time, maybe. 6 years ago I got a used left hand M700 300 RUM for $500 with a TSA hard case, Leupold Vx 6, Harris Bi pod, nice sling, and 5 boxes of ammo. One box only had 10 pieces that were shot. He said that he only shot it to sight it in before a hunt and never used it again, so it was a real cherry rifle. I since converted it to 300 WBY.

I bought a CC .25 from a co worker. Cheap. Found out years later that it was hot. I didn’t like it anyway

My wife is sharp. She picked up a once used Yoder smoker for 600. With the accessories it was 2800 new, I believe. She also picked up an 800 dollar espresso machine for 50, twice. My score was a beautiful 1892 lever gun. I turned 18 and was just wanting to try my new found liberty. I went to an auction. This was pre internet days, and all paper advertising. There were very few people even there. I bought the 92 for 250. What really bothers me is the memory of the 2 nickle 1873s that sold for around the same price. Or the slick LC that I bid up to 400 before it was more than I had.

Several years of $2 Resident elk and deer tags in Montana when I was a youth hunter...top it.

PS, you AK residents don't count.

I bought a Ruger 10-22 from a coworker years ago for $50. I don't know where it is now. I don't remember getting rid of it but it's not in the house or garage. I spent an hour yesterday looking for it.

Did You Ask Ms Eel About It?

Probably Doesn't Want You Shooting Any More Bucks in The Garden!:D

Many years ago, I bought a .300 Savage, it was a newer model, not one of old timers, that I’ve always had a soft spot for. I paid $70, cuz the guy reeeeeaally wanted to sell it and I didn’t want to buy it. ?

Bought a box of bullets for it and took it out back to shoot at a pop can. It nearly knocked my teeth out. I think I still have a half a box of ammo for it. Sold it for $50 and felt really bad for the guy that bought it. Tried to warn him…….. but…

Not what I’d call one of my finer “scores”.

I traded a Ruger .357 revolver for a Thompson Contender in 30-30. I couldn’t believe the guy wanted to trade, and figured that he would change his mind before I could get back with it. I actually asked him, after the fact, why, being as we both knew that the Contender was more valuable. His response was “when you pull the trigger the first time, you’ll figure it out “. Yup! I’ve since purchased 4 additional barrels. The 30-30 is my least favorite.

That Corner Of The Block Where Chico Had His Store/Pawn Shop Burnt Down here a couple of weeks ago!

Chico Has Been Gone for a few years now,Didn't Know If You Knew?

I moved out of my parents and into my first house in 2014. Took one of the shotgun reloaders and set up a reloading bench downstairs. I made the bench a tad too low so I had to keep a flat of shells under it to get it at the right height. Fast forward to 2020 when you cant get primers or powder. I'm cleaning the reloading bench and I move the reloader off the "flat of shells". I open the flat of shells the reloader sat on for the last 6 years and to my surprise there wasn't shells in there but 5000 Winchester 209 primers. That was a nice surprise!
