Does Montana even put you in the draw??

I just applied for Montana moose sheep and goat and my points have already increased by 1. Not the first time this has happened. Fwp told me in past years that they have had “issues” with the draw. Has anyone else seen this happen? I think many of us aren’t even in the “draw” in Montana. Their system is a complete joke. Check your points and respond if the same happened to you

The points you buy in MT are for the current year. So when you bought your point it gets put on pre draw and then if you draw they take them away.

Max on what? How many was "max". mtmuley
Montana is a bad joke- on you the non resident wanting to get a sheep tag ! I dumped many years of efforts to pull a tag -just a big waste of time & $$$$. I pulled out years ago from that mess ! ?

I was gonna comment that I’ve drawn both goat and moose as a NR so I know that I was atleast in the draw, but after reading your reply’s, I’m pretty certain they don’t put you in because your an a55hole.
Is your g-string too tight tonight? Sorry you were wrong with what you posted read the regs that’s not how it’s supposed to work.

I drew a nr moose tag in 2021
I think i had 14 points
Great hunt
Now im ready for Montana sheep ?

Interesting....I never noticed that before, as far as them adding the current year's bonus point prior to the draw. But then I've never looked until after the draw. They must have started that practice once they made BP's an optional purchase a few years back. No reason to believe we're not in the draw though, since a bunch of NR's report drawing each year.

It’s been like that for a few years. They do it with BP and general PP. It just apparently only causes excessive outrage for a small percentage of guys.

23 should be max now, counting this year's point.

They pretty much force you to buy the point if you apply, adding it to your total if you do, treating it as if you had no points if you don't buy the point.

I don't think that's right. I applied this year at the FWP office in Missoula just because I happened to be in town. The gal helping me just ask if I wanted to buy a point. I said yes and that gave me 20 points for Moose and Sheep. I believe if I would have said no I would have entered the draw with 19 points.

From the FWP website, link in my first post:

"If you purchase a bonus point with your application, your accumulated points and the point you purchased with your application are squared. For example, if you have accumulated 3 bonus points from prior years and purchase one when you apply this year, you'll have 17 total chances in the drawing; your 4 bonus points will be squared (42=16) and your application would count as one chance for a total of 17.

If you do not purchase a bonus point with your application, any accumulated bonus points are not used in the drawing and you’ll have one chance in the drawing. For example, if you accumulated 3 points from prior license years, and you do not purchase a bonus point when you apply this year, you would have one chance in the drawing and you will keep your accumulated points."

I guess I'm glad I buy a bonus point each year!! Not that it matters as I've never drawn yet.

I'll be the first to admit that of all the states I've applied for over the years I find Montana's to be the least user friendly --- and I live here!

Out of curiosity I was doing a little research on NR sheep and moose permits. I was lead to the NR work sheet for moose and sheep. It lists all the units a NR can apply for. Some units only have 2 tags 3tags etc. It clearly says in the hunters pamphlet that " that by state law NR's are limited to but not guaranteed 10% of the permit quota for a district.

In my finite mind that mean a NR could never draw a sheep in some of the units they are allowed to apply for. Must be something here I'm not seeing also.

If they pull a nonresident's # and there is both a tag available for the hunt and the 10% nonresident cap for the region has not been met, the applicant gets the tag. I'm guessing there is a method to picking the units nonresidents can apply in. I am guessing they only allow nonresidents to apply in hunts with normally enough resident applications to ensure that not many nonresidents draw too many tags in that unit. Having to beat both conditions also takes away advantage for a nonresident to pick an easier to draw unit. Just pick big and hope to get lucky. So far, I haven't been, with 23 points across the board.

If you go to the 2023 Moose, Sheep, Goat, Bison Pamphlet on page 37 it directs you to the N.R, worksheet for these animals on the FWP website. It lists the units N.R.'s can apply for. Several of the units listed only have 1 tag, 2tags etc., etc. In keeping with what the state law says a N.R. should not be able to ever draw a tag in lots of these units as that would exceed the 10% quota allowed to NR's.
Like I said earlier--- maybe I'm missing something.

The nonresident cap is 10% of the region quota, not the district quota. That includes ewe tags. A one tag district that is one they list as one nonresidents can apply for could be drawn by a nonresident if the 10% region cap has not been met.

could be worse...you could have checked the wrong box and used your sheep points during one of your unlimited trips like i did!

I'll just assume the draw is rigged when they deny me my tag! The draw results should be soon, they posted on May 10 last year.
