I pulled this off of Facebook muley freak, posted it …. One of the greatest vintage hunting photos ever taken.
.
“Swan Valley, Idaho circa 1968. 4 buddies from California headed out in a brand new 2-wheel drive GMC in mid-December for an adventure, and an adventure they got! 6 stud bucks, none smaller than 170”. Photo & story via @ryanhatfield1972 - you can learn more by reading his book, “Idaho’s Greatest Mule Deer”.”

I’m a product of the late 70’s but I sure do like those old pictures and stories. I’m guessing life was a heck of a lot simpler and pure back then ……….. born too late !

I’d give anything to go back to those “simpler” times.

Didn’t seem all that simple…… at the time.

East Germany, Cold War. Kennedy, Cuba, Assassinations, Johnson, Vietnam, Draft, Hippies, Kent State, Martin Luther, Malcohm X, KKK, Black Panthers, Street Riots, Burning Cities, Lynchings……… and that was all from 1960-1969.

Prior to the 1960s all folks had to stress about was the crash of 1929 and the Depression through the 1930s and the 1940s was a cake walk because that was World War II and the Korea War………. Ya, it’s tough now alright…….. maybe it’ll get easier and less stressful in the next decade.

You’d like to turn back the clock……?

But we keep reading about how easy you "boomers" had it compared to the gen z kids

4 across was common in the 60’s. Comfort is expensive! ?
My dad had a 72 F250 4wd. It was the only vehicle that he ever bought new his entire life. It had a straight front axle with leaf springs - rode as rough as a damn farm tractor. I remember taking family vacations across the country with 5 of us and a dog across the bench set. We didn't complain - we just took turns straddling the "transmission hump". It doesn't seem that bad but it also included a manual transfer case shifter, and the transmission shifter was always down in your knees when going going down the road at cruising speed (which was a slow 55 mph interstate speed limit back then)!

We also took several hunting trips with 4 across bouncing around on rough back roads. And you couldn't lean your head back to take a nap because there was a gun rack in the back window with guns & bows hitting you in the back of the head - LOL

I loved those simple days.

For you young guys that don't know how cramped those old trucks were - here is pic of 72 F250. The middle guys had NO leg room!!!

They killed some great bucks in Idaho and western Wyoming during the December hunts back then. We have racks laying around the shop from my wife's grandfather, that are once in a lifetime bucks for me. Wish I was there for those hunts!

Keep in mind most of those bucks were taken with open sighted 30-30s and nobody had binoculars...much less a range finder or Kuiu! ;)

Very true! I remember as a teenager hunting mule deer and antelope with my 30-30 that my dad bought me used for my 15th birthday and a bear recurve with homemade wood arrows. That’s all we had back then.
ditto,
My first deer was with a model 94 32 special.
