Well, my son drew the youth 23 burro mountain buck tag... what kind of hunt should we expect? Quality?
Thanks

>I will pm you my number.
>We hunted it 2 years
>ago.
>Tough hunt for a young kid.
>

Looking forward to visiting with you...

Thanks

Have been on that hunt 2 times. I don't want to sound bad but that hunt is crazy tough. I have been on probably 40 plus out of state hunts and it was the worst hunt ever been on. That being said the first hunt I went there saw very few deer but saw 2 bucks that were 180 plus. Next time could not even find a forkey. Neat country. My 2 cents worth. My friends kids drew Jr hunt and saw one forkey in 3 days of Hunting. I hunted late archery hunts.

Thanks for your two cents, sounds like deer densities are low?
When you say tough, are you referring to acces, terrain, deer numbers? Please elaborate.. my son will be 15 and very capable of putting in the effort... just wondering why it's considered a quality hunt..
Thanks

Per the 2018-19 proclamation:

Quality (Q) Hunt: These hunts are designed to increase opportunities for a successful harvest, achieve harvests from wider selections of mature deer or elk, and/or provide a pleasurable experience based on timing of the hunt and hunter density. Quality hunts are determined by the New Mexico State Game Commission.

High-Demand (HD) Hunt: An elk or deer draw hunt with at least 22% nonresident applicants for the previous two license years.

Residents of New Mexico pay the same fee for standard, quality or high-demand hunts. However, nonresident pay higher fees for quality and high-demand hunts.

I've seen plenty of deer in the Burro Mountains. But (1) I mostly see them when I'm hunting javelina, and (2) when it comes to deer, New Mexico isn't Wisconsin.

Water and Food are the limiting factors.
There's plenty of cover.

There are dirt roads all over the place, and I've heard of but not met the occasional land-ownership-delusional cranky old ranchers and miners. The mountains are not particularly high or steep, nor are the canyons particularly deep. Groundcover w/in the National Forest is mostly shin daggers, Gambel oak, pinon and juniper. Lots of dry washes and generally spatially limited water (springs, not creeks).

Because this area has been homesteaded from way back in the day, lots of stuff that you will see on the satellite photos may not be functional (e.g water tanks) and that'll only be figured out with on-site scouting. Make sure you know where the unit boundaries are.

I'll trade red unsuccessful applications for oryx AND speed goat for your green 'challenging' Burro's deer tag. Have fun.

Thanks for the info, not complaining in the slightest... just trying to get info and most had been relatively negative... we hunt hard and see better than most, so if there's one to be found we will definately do our damndest to dig him out...

Thanks for the info

Also if you are thinking of tent camping I would use some caution. We saw plenty of vagrants sleeping on the forest pull offs. I hope you find a whopper. The fun IS the hunting part. I have also killed multiple record book animals and can tell you straight up these guys are telling you straight. Nobody said don't go. Fish and game has some great youth hunts. They also have hunts that get kids into the field. If a young person is expecting to see game and have multiple shots, this likely will be on the low end. You very well could get lucky and shoot a dandy from the edge of the road the first day! These guys are just saying it is not likely

Thanks for the info, I realize New Mexico isn't known for its great deer hunting, I appreciate the heads up on the camping situation, probably pull a camper down.
We realize you make your own luck, I don't anticipate shooting anything from the road.... as I hope we can get into some country that may be less traveled... I still would like to know more about your trip to the Burros..

Thanks

How did the hunt go? My son just drew.

It’s considered “QUALITY “ so they can charge more

I just finished my muzzleloader mule deer hunt in the burros. Never saw another hunter or camper but I did have a dozen or so hikers on the continental divide trail pass thru the area I was in and learned a snickers bar will get you some good info what they have seen that day or day before
I saw 3 different bucks I should have shot but being solo and thinking about packing them out I held off. It was some ROUGH country.
I lost count on day 3 of all the Coues bucks I saw and could’ve filled that tag any of the 5 days pretty easy. If anyone has a tag I’ll pass on what I saw and where. i don’t agree with it being a Q/HD tag, but never seeing a road hunter or another hunter period was pretty nice. I wiped my tracks 3 or 4 times a day and never saw a fresh track tire or boot.
I’ll go back with someone or a horse if I ever draw again and I’ll get I’m sure

PS. Is there wolves in the burros? Sure seemed like it the ones I saw

sounds like you had a good hunt seeing some deer. I am trying to get a tag there for coues one year.

Who cares what I put on an open forum. I’m not a democrat and I don’t mind helping someone fill their tag. We are all hunters but most of you pricks on here act like your some instagram blow hard which you probably are.

Think you missed the humor in that post. ?

In case you’re wondering what that is try clicking on it…..?
Just FYI I don’t have instagram, facebook, twitter, or tic toc ..
as far as social media goes this is it.
You can “ BLOW HARD “ all you want , just try not to get butt hurt again in the process.
??

See….. humor!

Oh and there’s plenty of guys here that can vouch, I love to help.
Just hit that magic button that looks like an envelope. ??

Why not? Folks are blasted for asking.

Imagine what would happen if the new state record mule deer came out unit 2A and everyone knew it. Do you think the number of applications would increase, decrease, or remain the same when people knew they might be able to get in on some of those genetics as well?

Now imagine if the guy who shot that deer said he hunted up on Pump Mesa close to a canyon that was privately owned that had very little pressure.

That was the point to the sarcastic humor in that post. You spoke about a hunt that produced some good coues opportunities with very little pressure. You'd be surprised the shear number of lurkers on these forums that just glean information from others and then never contribute.

Don't take it personally...

It’s almost like it should be common sense ???
