Manti Muzzleloader Elk

Well, got the email I have been waiting 23 years for. I will be hunting the Manti with my Muzzleloader at the end of September for Elk. My Dad had an Early Rifle tag in 2013 and he ended up getting his on Skyline Drive up above Fairview. I wouldn’t say I know the unit really well but have a feeling I will start on that end of the unit as I know it a little from his hunt. Wondering if anybody has any pointers for me as this will be a one time shot for me at Elk in Utah. I can’t wait to get up there and chase rutting Bulls. Hopefully it’s a good year for the rut on those dates. It’s going to be a long Summer!

The DWR hunt planner website has excellent info for that unit, study it close and you'll do well. Good luck!

Hunt during the week. Sanpete really pushes sxs riding and every weekend it's packed. Fairview, Ephraim, 12 mile are paved, so they see the most people.

Hardest part of Manti, is shrinking down where you want to hunt, the unit is huge, and access is good pretty much everwhere.

Might not hurt to call FS/BLM and find out where the sheep are, they come off end of September so they will still be spread out.

Don't sleep on mid elevation areas. There's been some monsters(390+) brought out of the WMA,s in the last decade, elk love alfalpha and have no problem going up and down the mtn each day to get to it.

You drew the tag I can't seem to draw, congrats!!

Thanks for the info. Been studying the hunt planner this morning and it’s basically recommended areas that I was planning on starting my efforts in the vicinity of anyways along with a few tips from other generous members. Think I will hunt the North end. Definitely keep getting warned about the sheep so I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks again and I hope you draw it next year.

12 mile is not paved, infact come that time of the year after months of camp trailers and sidexside trailers being dragged up the switch backs and spring hill dugway the washboard bumps are so bad you would belive the fillings in your teeth are going to rattle out.
The scrub oak is probably going to have a bumper crop of acorns this year. The cows and calves are going to be feeding heavy in the oak so that is where the bulls will be.

Brain fart when I typed that. I was thinking about the 3 most traveled, and making coffee at the same time??

On side note.

Think snowdrift at Jets will melt this year?
