Is it ok to shoot out?

However you do it, expect some rust. Blackhorn is not complete void of rust if left in the barrel. Especially if it is a fouled barrel.

My buddy was worried about firing a load of BH209 that had been in his TC muzzleloader for at least 5 years. We rigged it up in a rifle rest and used a string to pull the trigger. Fired just like normal and has been fired since.
I’d say wear some eye protection and shoot it.

I Do My Own testing!

I Purposely Left A REMINGTON UML With a Load Sitting In It For 3 Years!

I Pulled The Breach Plug & Studied The Bullet & The Powder!

There's No Doubt In My Mind It Woulda Fired Close To a Fresh Load!

The Bullet Did Have a Little Corrosion On it & The Powder was partially Solidified!

No Noticeable Pitting Of The Barrel or The Breach Plug!

Don't try The Same test With GOEX 3fff!:D

Glad it went well. When it comes to powder, black, 209 or any other be it modern gun powder or nitro…… why take the risk. I’ve torn-up up enough hair, hide and bone accidentally without doing something I know can go bat sh!t on me.

I now see you said it's Rem Ultimate Muzzleloader. I can get the breech plug broken loose for you with enough Kroil ...and time ....and effort if you want.

I think I owe you that much.

When are you going to be at Fish Lake…… I’m gonna make your acquaintance this summer……. like it or not!

DC,

I was near you in Richfield twice, recently. Once on business and once to the DMV to get boat stickers so both were quick or busy trips. I spent a day and a half at the cabin but between kids, grandkids (and BB gun shooting) I didn't have much time to reach out.

The truth is, I thought about you each and every time so evidently you've made a positive impact on my brain!

It'll happen sooner than later but I don't have a specific time until the muzzleloader hunt with a grandson on Sept 27th.

Well dang….. sorry I missed seeing you. Keep trying…….. we got gossip to work on. ?

I shootout every late evening (AWAY FROM MY HUNTING SPOT) and start fresh with a new load in the early AM.

My muzzleloader load is generally always Goex and XTPs bought in bulk. So the expense of firing several loads every blackpowder season is hardly an after-thought.

I know a guy that shot and hit a bull elk. He quickly reloaded and in the excitement of the moment forgot his ram rod was still in the barrel. He said it kicked alot harder. His friend let him use his ram rod to reload and finish off the bull. It was a big bull! No, he didn't find his ram rod.

Should have checked the lung cavity.?

Is it the same case if you have an old black powder that's been loaded for years. It had a tag on it when I inherited it. The tag said loaded beware. I have never shot it but would like to get the loaded gun out of my safe.....LOL
I was thinking about setting it up on a bench with a string as was stated above in this tread.

What type of gun? They make CO2 dischargers to stick on/over the nipple to blow the powder and bullet out the barrel. An air compressor and nozzle might work, but I have never tried it.

If it’s old enough to have been loaded with a round ball….a screw jag will easily pull it….wear ear plugs and safety glasses…..lol
