Utah Draw-only Youth Any Bull/Hunter's Choice Elk Tag.

Hello all,
My daughter drew a Utah Draw-only Youth Any Bull/Hunter's Choice Elk Tag. I understand this is a some what ok tag. Rifle hunt in the rut sounds awesome. However its a new state and we're limited on scouting. Anyone with some insight or had a youth hunter in the past with this tag might be able to help make my daughter's hunt a success. How'd did any past hunts go?
Thank you all.

I hope somebody will help out your NR youth daughter. I think it's just an OK-ish tag for an NR youth that doesn't live close to the Utah border.

Only advantage is dates and guys are tight lipped as the hunt is on the OTC any bull units. No price break for NR youth, so it's expensive as far as youth tags go.

One of my sons drew it a few years back and I tried working a private land deal and I didn't get far (Zion unit mostly). And then he had a couple difficult classes and I couldn't risk him missing 6-7 days of school. So, just ate the tag and stopped applying for that tag for my kids.

But I think that tag can be a good one for an NR youth that lives close to the utah border and will hunt a border unit. Or, more distant kids that are able to miss alot of school. And maybe a parent that will throw money at access/outfitting.

Thank you Crampy.
I believe you're correct on the time spent in the area's. I'm home schooling her so we'll take school work with us. I appreciate the information my friend. We're going to try to get there early and scout our eyeballs out of our skulls hoping to see something we can put a stalk on.

My son had the tag a few years ago. It was extremely hot. We hiked and hiked hunt different areas in northern Utah. Turned up fresh sign but never saw an elk. Got one to bugle back just before sundown but never saw him. We didn't see a ton of people in the areas we went. Everyone we talked to had the same issues as us.

Muleman1, I appreciate it. One hand washes the other so I'll do the same. However we won't have a summer to scout, maybe a week before season. Anyway it's going to be a good time regardless.
I am a resident and will scout all summer so I will be willing to swap information

This is probably the best year to draw that tag in the past 20 years. There are going to be a lot of nice bulls hitting the dirt this fall. Congrats on the kids getting a tag.
rigdetops,
Thanks. We feel blessed to have drawn it. I truly hope you're right. From the few hunters I've spoken with, the consensus is the same, mostly. Some say it's just a glorified OTC tag during the rut. I however believe your thinking. If a guy works harder than the next guy, goes farther ect. It's gonna be a amazing trip. I just hate going in blind. So I've been researching / E-scouting. Fingers crossed ? it pays off.

Rabbitslayer78 I will be doing some scouting in a few areas this summer. I'll be out in the box elder saw tooths, around monte Cristo, and the cinnamon creek are. I have a trip to the uintas coming up in July as well. I'll pass along what I see. It's a good tag to have just wish we could have turned up an elk when my kid had the tag. He gets some redemption hopefully this year drawing a le bull tag.

My youngest son also has a tag for this hunt. We did it a couple years ago with my oldest and he got an elk. So hopefully we can turn up some elk in the same areas. Just depends on how much pressure they get from bow hunters and if the weather takes a turn. Either way we have 3-4 areas that we can hit during the week
Good luck it’s a good tag to have if you have the right hunt matches with the right kid

Never under estimate the secret unspoken gem of the South Slope of the Uintahs. Lotsa acreage and lotsa elk, it maybe your besst bet, You’d be PluMb crazy not to give it a look after spending some time on the Anthro of course first.
Best of luck.
