Colorado Unit 40

I'm trying to do as much research on this unit as much as I can. My buddy and I both got drawn for unit 40 cow tags. We really didn't think we would draw it, we figured we could just build a point. We were trying to get drawn for mule deer in other units and thought let's just build a point. We hunted in unit 43 two years ago and both are tag soup. Haha. We are still trying to decide if we want to hunt the unit. There are some concerns that we have. Looking at ONx it looks like there are a lot of BLM roads, how are the roads to get into the unit? We would like to get as far as we can with the truck then hike even farther. Also how are the cow numbers, do we have a decent chance if we put in the work? We learned a lot when we hunted unit 43. I'm not looking for specific areas just on the unit as a whole.

I wouldn't Hike As Far As You Can For a Cow!

I'd Become a Bonified Road-Hunter For That Hunt!

There's Lots Of Roads But Lots Of Private As Well!

Maybe ColoradoBoy Can Chime In!

If we can see them from the road and they are on public that would definitely be ok also but we aren't afraid to put the miles on the boots if we have to. Are the roads good enough for a fullsize truck or would it be benefit us to bring a SXS? We are trying not to tow a SXS from Georgia if we don't have to. Thanks

Your not going to shoot a cow off any road in 40 during 3rd season unless you are very very lucky!

In terms of public land, there’s no such thing as an easy elk in unit 40. Your past experience in 43 won’t serve you much good in 40. They are completely different worlds as far as terrain and elk behavior/patterns if that make sense. Majority of the bulls will make the push towards the Dolores triangle. I would take a look at hunting around the Unaweep canyon area off hwy141. Make sure you ONX maps and have as much of the unit downloaded as possible.

Thank you for the information. I haven't looked much around Unaweep canyon but I'll definitely start looking more into it. The units are definitely different, hopefully we can adapt to it quickly and become successful.
