Might as well get this started

Well, draw results are out so I figured now is as good a time as ever…

If I could get everyone’s frequented spots they’ve ever harvested a big game animal, favorite camping spots, and the location your wives will be at when your away hunting I’d much appreciate it.

Not looking for anyone’s honeyhole or anything. 😂😂😂

Happens all too often muleylover; actually got a little Christmas with mine this year; drew a unit 15 cow elk tag. No gripping from me.

🖕🏿man, just look at the threads that started after the results came out ……. People handing 💩 out on open forums left and right.

Its worse on Facebook 🤣

No such thing as a honey hole anymore boys. I get the hunting community sticks together to help on another but... gosh damn, get off your ass, buy some glass, hike to some high points in an area you draw, look for animals, if you don't find then move, rinse and repeat. I hate when people just blast areas and waypoints, etc... put in the work just like the rest of us that do and stop trying to reap the rewards others have worked for. Last thing.... be careful who you share points with. I've personally seen areas "honey holes," blown out by friends inviting friends inviting friends etc.

I'm a newer hunter and I try to be helpful in general and I'll give out little things I've seen in areas I don't plan on hunting.

Other things I definitely wouldn't post here or say openly. Probably over pm or something or not at all.

CHURCH ! That’s the truth 💯!

Isn’t that what PM’s are for?

I’ll take any turkey advice. I’m coming in next week, limited time, and coming in pretty blind. PMs open lol
"First time non-res here. Never been to NM, saw a super sweet hunter influencer post an amazing hunt in NM and decided to try my luck. First time ever I drew a 34 2nd archery elk tag, OIL Oryx, and a BH tag. Apparently these are good tags, I don't know I just guessed. Can anyone tell me where to start? What gear should I bring? Will I need a 4x4 or will the electric car rental from the airport be ok. (I'm trying to be ecofriendly.) Do I need a tent or is there a nearby hotel? Should I bring food? Do I need a passport, I've never been out of country? I've been running because Cameron Hanes said to, and only first light because the HUSH why not. Any help would be appreciated, not looking for specific spots, but if you could drop some waypoints that would be great! Thanks boys, Keep Hammering and Stay Hard!"

Yeah, I’m a turkey hunter. Killed in many states, just decided to come try New Mexico. Spur of the moment trip lol

It's tough, you can do a lot of data mining on units with a simple google search. I have asked for general advice and received it on here, I have also gotten crickets. Lol. I have also provided general advice to others on units I am familiar with but have never given a "spot away". Some sites have gone as far as deleting any thread that has a unit number or name attached to it, to me this is a little extreme, a post from 7 years ago usually doesn't have any merit on the current hunting conditions. Most states post some pretty good harvest data on their pages, how you interpret it is up to you. Every time I draw a new unit or somewhere I haven't been in a while I make sure to get there early, scout as much as I can and put in the effort. Good luck to those that drew, I will try again next year.

So true, I admit that I enjoy seeing other people's harvest and don't post anything, I will share info with folks I have talked with offline. Social media has changed the game, and not for the better. I used to draw a NM bull tag every couple of years, now I am 11 years from the last one. I will keep applying and hoping but its not getting any easier.

So glad I don't have to send out any help me PMs this year, I drew the same archery elk unit again ( both as 3rd choice )as 2022. I need to stop and buy some scratch offs this weekend for sure. At 3/4 percent odds I wonder what that would be on drawing 2 out of 3 years. The downside is that the rest of my apps even if 90 percent odds I bet I will not hit them.

Social media has changed the game, and not for the better.

With 6 % non res - non outfitter tag allocation and greatly increased applicants every year it’s very hard and going to be harder to draw a tag in New Mexico as a diy hunter. Even becoming hard to draw through an outfitter. Yes social media has attributed ALOT. New Mexico has some great hunting so a guy always has to try, but definitely getting more difficult to draw.

I saw NM Paul drew Unit 34 he is going to be asking for everyone's sweet spots. I drove through a couple months ago so I will help him out.
If anyone has a spot where I dont have to hike on rocks all day I am interested. LOL
Actually at this point its my sons responsibility. He better get me on something good so I can miss. He guided a youth hunter to a monster last year, so I now got standards.
He dont let me post his guiding pics on social media a real prima Dona.
haha

Y’all , we post these things in good humor, but also with self-experienced validity. I’ve been the recipient of many members gracious help. I try to help others on here whenever possible. That’s part of the community and stewardship we sportmen share. However, as mentioned above, there is SO much one can gather from searching these forums and the internet to direct them towards a good starting point.

I will say, the help I’ve received has come after posting of hardships and questions related to the data and execution of my initial plan and approach to an area. I believe it is when others see the effort and will that when we’re encouraged to reach out and help. To just show up Johnny on the spot and request such exact or even broad insight without no shown effort that’s what ruffles feathers.

Stay or get passionate on perusing these amazing animals and evolve/perfect those skills towards harvesting them. It takes time and repeated failures to build success. Stop asking for the participation trophies and get out there and EARN those wins. You just might find out the HUNT is the prize and the meats just an added reward.

💯 hunting has always been one of the best ways to build relationships with others; some you already know and others you’ve yet to meet.

So…lace up those boots and get into some beautiful country and educate yourself 🤙🏻 shoot straight and good hunting!

When i see request for help I take a couple things into consideration. Have they been a member here or did they just drop in trolling for info. If they have a post count of 3 all they get from me is a "welcome to MM". Second, how hard is the tag to draw. I do not help with general units or things that can be drawn regularly. The harder the tag to draw the more info I will share.

Having said all that...did I mention I drew a 2B late archery deer tag? PM's welcome

I personally have no issue with giving out information. I feel blessed to have hunted every single year since I was 12 years old and have drawn at least one tag for the last 30 years.
Karma has been good! My wife drew the Elk-700 tag first time out, my daughter has drawn antelope several years in a row and last year had a unit 15 youth ES elk tag. This year my 9year old son has a 16-D 1st rifle tag and my brother and I have unit 15 2nd archery tags and a couple 45 deer tags in our group.
I feel blessed and love to help those that are humble and happy to have the information. The years have taught me what was good last year might not be the same this year as far as animal activity and being adaptable is key which is what I try and share more than location.
There is no need to be bitter, count your blessings and help if you can or don’t!
I feel it always comes back to me in the end.

Not that I have a ton of experience in dealing with this situation as I am pretty new to the forum, but I have been on both ends....I have through private messages received basic information on hunts/areas/states....and also provided info. When requesting, it has only been for my kids hunts as I usually put them in for an "unknown"....and members have responded through private message.....

Long story short....and personal opinion only.....I think we are proving to being a social being by just being a member of monster muleys ....if requests are made and it seems genuine in promoting all of our passion of hunting/fishing, then we can make the decision to help or not.....but again, I think it should be through a private direct message....and agree with Bugle....public blasting should be an no-no

Rinella talks about two types of people in hunting, and I totally agree with his breakdown.

First type is the guy who says everything is screwed up, good times are a thing of the past, will never be the same, non-residents ruined it all, social media tells all secrets, etc…can’t seem to be pleased.

Second guy doesn’t have enough time left in his life to see all the spots he wants to see, fish the spots he’s never been, wishes he could make it over the next ridge, maybe next year. Sees abundance all around him.

We have both types all over MM, way more guys in the first bucket.

Ive been humbled by the willingness of folks to help me in the past and I try to give generously in return. We’ve got a great community of folks here, I hope others enjoy it like I have. Even some of you grouchy dudes are way nicer than you seem 😉

Spot on. With hunting if you cant make adjustments, evolve and stay positive, this is probably not your activity.

I’m a creature of habit and hate change in general. Always have . We really do have a good community here.

There isn’t no reason to wish for the good ol days to be back brother ! Ain’t never gonna happen . I’ll raise my hand and say I’m in that first bucket , even though a bunch of us help eachother , it doesn’t change my opinion about attention whores on all social media platforms putting everything on blast definitely screwed up a lot of things. This is literally the only SM platform I’m on , and I love talking about generalized hunting. Hell I have 6 private messages asking for help in certain units, and I will help them , but they have the sense to keep it off open platform a respectfully message .
The ANTIS are a huge problem too! Don’t for one second think they’re not the biggest reason draw odds are horrible!
As for NR , I hurt for them instead of blame them . I’m a firm believer the outfitter pool needs to go away and more tags need to be allocated to them.
Like Paul says we gotta adapt, that means divorcing certain units and weapon choices so be it.
Oh yeah ……
🖕🏿 Rinella and Newberg. 🤣🤣

Geno, you are right about divorcing certain weapon choices. I found out last year that I am not able to do open sight muzzleloader anymore. Cant see the sites. I can still see bow sites because now you are only 20-50 from the animal, but, at some point those sites are gonna be to blurry also.

I hear you my friend! My dad can’t use a bow any more.
I’m definitely divorcing some units as well!
We can’t all draw a great rifle tag 🤣

I hear you, Geno. Plenty to be frustrated about for sure.

Popularity of hunting is certainly high right now, I think that’s a good thing. Take a look at what’s happening in Colorado, the more popular hunting is and the more people are exposed to it, the better chance we have of defeating initiatives like that. If social media helps us achieve that, I’m a fan. In my brief time on Instagram, I have never seen anything posted that’s unit specific that has ever helped me harvest an animal. I just don’t see it 🤷 maybe it’s out there and I am too slow to see it?

Shoot man, I think Rinella and Newberg do a lot for the sport. For me, I care more about the fact that people have the right to hunt than I do about me personally getting to chase elk every year in NM. That said, If I don’t get to chase muleys every other year or so I start getting grumpy! I think guys like them will help ensure we have the right to hunt well into the future. Are the woods more crowded because of them? Probably. I just think that problem is better than the alternative.

I’m chasing barbs this year and you know your welcome in camp brother!

Heck yes my friend! That’s some good news! The boys drew also! I’ll shoot you a text and see what hunt 🤜🏼🤛🏽

As a late onset ( 29 ) big game hunter I can see both sides of the argument. My dad waterfowl hunted and applied for points for me but the bug never stuck…. Until it did. I can tell you part of the reason the bug took so long was trying to figure it out. Waterfowl is simple in the aspect of see bird go back and kill bird , or migration starts kill bird. Big game has many more caveats just from the lack of available resource.

I will never blow an area up but will
Always help something that is trying. It feels like we’re at a point where recruitment numbers will start to slip just due to frustration.

Newberg rubbed me the wrong way when he blamed the people consuming the content he makes as the issue not his content itself.

Over on Rokslide you are not allowed to post anything providing information about or requesting information on any specific unit so I think some guys are migrating over here where it is still allowed to get unit specific info…

Horniac

I do like that. I like yall to much to leave 🤣
It does just blow my mind. I could imagine how many units get blasted on FB or Insta!

It is great at this stage of our lives. We are still able to get around a little, but the sons are now old enough to do the heavy lifting. I always told my three sons when they were little and I was packing their animals out that they would pay me back when I got old and they got bigger. Now their packs are heavy and mine is light and they still kick my butt up the hills!!!
