    Unit 61 colorado elk

As stated earlier there was a 390" bull killed early season last year. I have a picture of it, but don't have permission to post. Agree that archery or muzzleloader is the way to go in 61 , or actually anywhere in my opinion.

26 elk nr pp..what good units?

The muzzleloader numbers are almost the same. Unit 2 went from 50% with 20 points to 67% with 22 points during the same 5 years. Slightly less than 3 points in 5 years. Unit 10 went form 25% with 18 points to 50% with 21 points, again less than 3 points in 5 years. Unit 201 went from 27% with 20...

26 elk nr pp..what good units?

Accidentally posted before I was finished. Unit 201 archery increased almost exactly 3 points in 5 years, approx. .61 points a year

26 elk nr pp..what good units?

WV Your assertion that the top Colorado units have been jumping a point a year is commonly believed, but not actually accurate. I am referring only to archery and muzzleloader seasons. The numbers for the last 5 years (2015-2019) in Units 2, 10 and 201 are as follows. Unit 2 Archery- In 2015 20%...

26 elk nr pp..what good units?

I had an archery tag in Unit 10 last year and I would be all over it in a heartbeat if I had another chance. As Coloradoboy mentioned you have to learn the area well and be aware of borders with private and the Monument, but that is the only negative when comparing with 2 and 201 in my opinion...

    Unit 10 archery elk tag!

Ruttinelk, I also drew the Unit 10 archery tag. I know the unit fairly well, but always interested to hear advice, opinions, observations, etc. from anyone out there with knowledge of the unit. Ruttin, I will shoot you an email tomorrow.

So much for big deer in CO...

I think this idea of killing more big bucks to slow spread of CWD is questionable at best, but I do have a small dose of positive news. I was shed hunting the last few days in northwest Colorado in an area I'm very familiar with, and I saw more deer than I have in 10 years. I know this is a very...

    Quotas

Don't know what they will do, but the second half of winter was when the big snows happened. Close to all time records for March in many areas, especially the southern half of the state. Hope the Gunnison herds have fared ok.

    HOW FAR IS TOO FAR?

BOHUNTRx2 For me the max distance on an elk is about 55 yards. Too many variables beyond that no matter how well you shoot at the range. I have killed or guided over 60 archery elk kills and only one was over 50 yards. The percentage of unrecovered bulls on 50+ yards shots goes up...

    Colorado winter

The snowpack in the northern half of the western slope is above average, but not as high as the drainages in the southern half. It's been a cold and snowy winter everywhere in western Colorado, but we've finally got some warm temps the last few days. In general the stuff north of GJ should be a...

If you can afford a guided hunt or trespass fee I would look at Unit 40, otherwise I agree with your choice. Archery in 61 is a really fun hunt.

Has Colorado Peaked? All down hill?

This is a good topic, but not one that is easily answered. I have pretty good knowledge of a few areas, but certainly not the entire state. I live in the central mountains and am very familiar with units 34,43,444,47, and 471. I don't feel that the numbers of elk are down in this area, but I...

    2018 Unit 2 Elk tag

Good advice above. I would contact Jimmy Horton if you have the money to spend. You can still hunt on your own, but hunt private or gain access to harder to get to public. You can also opt to stay in one of the cabins. Don't know the price. I agree that most people shoot bulls under 350. I...

    What would you do?

You might consider 2nd season Unit 10. I was just there for 3rd season and I killed a nice buck and really enjoyed the hunt. This year 10 of 16 residents drew 2nd season with 8 points. Not a guarantee, but a pretty good chance of drawing. I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions, but I thought...

    Colorado Unit 10 - 3rd rifle season

Not the same one. The one I saw was probably a couple of inches narrower, but he had no busted tines. I got a very good look at him, I agree it was a fun hunt and I saw a lot more deer than I thought after some of the comments here. Did you see any big bulls? I saw lots of elk, and some big...

    Colorado Unit 10 - 3rd rifle season

Woodturner, Where did you see the wide buck without a lot of mass? It sounds a lot like the one I saw after I killed mine. It was also right near the road, but actually on public. It was on county road 16 about two miles east of Harpers Corner intersection. I killed mine near 16 also, but a...

    Colorado Unit 10 - 3rd rifle season

This is not my thread, but I also had a 3rd season tag. I had a fun hunt and killed a nice buck around "180. I only hunted a couple of days due to work demands, but I saw a lot of bucks. Most were not huge, but I saw 2 others I would have shot the day after I killed mine. One had a bigger frame...

EH4, I also have a 3rd season tag and would love to hear how your hunt goes. I have also been doing some scouting and have seen quite a few deer. I have seen a few good bucks and would be happy to tell you where I have been seeing things. I figure they will be scatted by the time I get there...

Lots of good suggestions and choices here. One thing I would definitely do is go south to Carbondale and take 133 to Delta. Beautiful drive, way more interesting than taking I-70 to Grand Junction.

    Colorado Unit 10 - 3rd rifle season

Woodturner, I can give you some help, but I'm leaving on a fishing trip for most of this week so it will be next weekend at least. Look at some maps and send me a private message with some more specific questions and I'll try to give you some ideas.

    Colorado Unit 10 - 3rd rifle season

There is a lots of public land in unit 10. If you can afford it and want to go with an outfitter great, but it's not necessary in my opinion. The deer population is down a bunch in the northwest corner, but the buck/doe ration is very good in 10. You can find deer just about anywhere in the...
