Thought on New Mexico draw process

Thought on New Mexico draw process

So 203 total resident applicants for 43 tags. 68 are first choice the remaining 135 are 2nd or 3rd choice. Those 135 could draw another tag since it was their 2nd or 3rd choice. If all of them drew another tag first your odds would be approx 63%. That's unlikely so your odds are somewhere...

Thought on New Mexico draw process

That's going off toprut. Looking at the draw statistics from nmdfg won't give you true odds since some of the applicants will draw before getting to their later choices. Where did you get your odds from ?

Awesome is a relative term I guess. Awesome compared to any otc the hunt. Your 21 tag is about 50% odds and I'd call that an awesome tag.

Thought on New Mexico draw process

New Mexicans have pretty dang good odds of drawing an awesome elk tag.... like 50%! A wait period after drawing may be effective for residents. For non residents, I don't think itd make much difference. If there's 15 NR tags for a hunt and 500 applicants......them 15 sitting out doesn't change...

Thought on New Mexico draw process

I agree.....nm has one of the best draw systems. Another thing with points is that people feel like they're missing out if they don't put in every year in a point system. Also ppl put everyone they know in so they can ride on their points after they draw...... points system = worse odds.

Thought on New Mexico draw process

I don't know about total numbers of hunters in the US decreasing or increasing but I do know that a LOT of midwestern guys that only whitetail hunted and such before are now headed west hunting. Especially with all the YouTube sensations and good economy. Lots of guys getting into hunting other...

Thought on New Mexico draw process

Point systems don't help your odds at either unless there's enough tags to clean out the upper point holders. Most places are well beyond this point. Most ppl dont realize the states that square your points really don't help your odds. You just get swamped by the lower point holders. Say you...

Thought on New Mexico draw process

Applying other year doesn't do anything to your odds. You still have xx amount of people applying for x amount of tags. Increase your odds when you can apply but you can only apply half as much. Maybe limit your hunt choices to 1 choice. This would give you better odds of drawing the tag you...

With all the new rifle talk

If you can get good 22cm brass in small primer pocket, that'd be the route I'd go. Could also go 6cm and shot 105s. The small primer pockets are a lot tougher and can handle pressure better.

    Tikka T3 denting bullets

lead tipped bullets don't have consistent tips to start with. If you aren't shooting very far, it shouldn't be an issue. If you are shooting further, I wouldn't be shooting lead tips.

    New long range combo

How does that 40 cal compare to shooting a 300gr .452 old? Looks like a better bc with better velocity. I thought sabots didn't work that great at those kind of velocities. Now I kinda want to try them .40 cal bullets.

Bonus Pts for Deer, Elk, Antelope

Bonus points suck. Your odds still get worse every year. With the squaring system you just get swamped out by all the ppl with low pts. Say there's 500 ppl with 2pts =2000 chances, the next year they all got 3pts = 4500 chances and you go from 20 to 21pts.... you still got a really shitty...

    Special cougar draw

I was going to apply but from reading the regs you either had to be successful in the hound drawing after drawing a cougar tag or go with an outfitter. You couldn't just go with a buddy. And if unsuccessful in the hound drawing you dont get a refund on your tag. Maybe I didn't understand it...

How much to tip a guide?

I personally don't feel like tips should be expected. They offer a service for an agreed upon price. If they go above and beyond that then by all means tip them. Do you tip every time you hire someone to do something on your house? What is the difference between that and hiring a guide? I mostly...

    Swarovski vs. Vortex or other?

Swaro is better and will hold it's value better. How much you spend can depend on how much you use it. Not worth spending much if you dont use it much. I bet the cost of ownership with a swaro is less. Warranties are just a sales gimmick that people go bananas over if you ask me. For some reason...

    Vacuum Sealer.... Which one?

it does it in a chamber. Sucks all the air out of the chamber then seals the bag. Sometimes if the liquid is too warm it will boil. They don't require the special mesh like vacuum bags either which is why the bags are so much cheaper. $80 for 1000 10"x13" 4mil bags.
  34. S

    Vacuum Sealer.... Which one?

a bit pricey but bags are wayyyy cheaper and you don't have to worry about water messing up the seal. Heck you can vacuum pack a bag of water if you want to.
