    1000 lakes archery deer

Access is pretty good if you are a capable hiker. Units small look high and/or try and find bucks hitting ag on private and bedding on public. I have elk hunted it a bunch.

    Utah draw odds?

Because those are odds just results. You got to do the math yourself.

    Zion Unit Mule Deer

Hard unit for a decent buck and lots of private and tags (tag numbers cut this year so maybe less hunters). The fires is the other side of 89 and there was a fire closer to virgin Utah but it’s out.

    Point system sure is great?

The solution is no points, not a new point system. Creep is out of control.

Who wants to hunt the Zion early rifle

I live, work, and hunt on the unit. Does not match my style too much. Areas that I want to hike into get a lot of illegal atv us. I typically pick up a muzzy yearly no points but I have one this year so another local unit instead. Also a ton of any bull hunters during early rifle so...

Who wants to hunt the Zion early rifle

I wouldn’t burn 4pts on Zion unless I have private access.

    GS ELK

Get rid of multi season general tags. Go back to pick 1. Personally I feel we need to go to a straight lottery/no points for limited hunts. Points don’t work once creep sets in. ID and NM knew what they were doing. I will start applying for limited elk next year in Utah. In 30 year, odds...

    Zion park mule deer

With the temps, the rut has not really kicked on yet but still some to easily see from the shuttle and a couple Springdale city bucks worth looking at. I live in the park and had the limited muzzy tag this year and definitely a down year and it’s still hot and dry.

    New long range combo

I didn’t lobby Utah to a one shot rifle season instead of a muzzleloader season. I would prefer that we had primitives only and much shorter rifle hunt (definitely not two rifle seasons on most general units) and I would prefer we got rid of rifle rut hunts for elk. I have wounded one big...

    New long range combo

That’s a great accomplishment, but probably belongs as it’s own thread.

    New long range combo

The BC is much higher. They make this bullet in a 300 as well but the 275 is plenty for how far I will shoot at fur. you need a gun that can stabilize the higher bc bullet. I believe my barrel is 1-18 twist. If I would use smokeless powder and speed it up just a little then it would start...

I want to hunt Coues Deer! Now how do I go about doing that?

I am hoping to head down from Utah with a rifle couse tag at some point but I am likely going to have some points by that time. So hard to decide which out of states hunts to try and draw each year. I have 3 points now and this year I have a limited buck tag in Utah, next year a Colorado elk...

    New long range combo

I have a primitive and an inline cva wolf as well. I would prefer states kept the regulations inline with primitive guns during muzzleloader seasons that make the hunts harder and less desirable to draw but many have gone the other away. I live in Utah where this gun is legal during the...

    New long range combo

I tried a new combo in my custom savage (Steven’s actually) muzzleloader. 28” .458 barrel Brake Arrowhead 209 plug Sits in a XLR element chassis (I use this for my PRC and WSM actions as well) Nightforce SHV 275 gr .402 bullets out a blush crush sabot I thought for sure they weren’t going...

    Pine Valley Bow

I would say spot and stalk. I live on the Zion unit and have not be out on pine valley this year since I have a limited buck tag. The monsoons have been pretty good so the deer will be spread out. I have hunted it once since it’s harder to draw and likely will start hunting it as dedicated...

    Western Nebraska Late Muzzleloader

I may also couple a Nebraska bird hunt with the Muzzy deer tag. But I will likely target whitetails as I live in Utah and have limited mule deer tag this year. My brother is spending the summer/fall maybe winter there so waiting to see what he puts down during the archery/gun season. or I go...

Definitely going to fork on that tip!!!

    Deer growth

seen a few that should finish 175-180” so at least a few bucks should show up to rut.
  20. E

    Deer growth

The same I will be happy with but the snow pack was much less in southern Utah than last year. The possible rain now into the rest of the week maybe the difference. The biggest bucks that I will be targeting are protected until they hit the rutting/winter range.

    Deer growth

Anyone seeing an decent bucks yet with the drought? Sitting on a late muzzy tag I drew with 7 pts and hoping to find a decent buck. Saw a few +180s during the hunt last year a +200” that showed up late. Getting rain right now so hopefully that will help some finish.

Is it time for an 80/20 split in Utah

The real question is how does Utah get out of the points system????

    Pine Valley Unit

As a nonresident pine valley and Panguitch are the harder units to draw. Lots of Vegas and California flock there due to the fact it’s close to the border.

Fiber optic upgrade for the Williams globe sight

I personally can see it fine during shooting hours. It will depend on your eyes.

Fiber optic upgrade for the Williams globe sight

I prefer the really fine crosshairs with a tiny bit of white paint in the junction of the crosshairs. The fiber optics are so big they cover a lot when I am trying to take a longer shot.

    Pine Valley Unit

Well did you draw it. That’s what matters first.
  27. E

    Pine Valley Unit

Extremely dry already this year, scout a few area. The unit likely will have some fires and on a normal moistures year it has a few. a few options in enterprise or pine valley (the city) and definitely in Cedar City which would be way better locations to stay. majority of the deer are north...

    Muzzleloader sights

Depends on how good your eyes are. It's not the best but can be improved a little bit by painting a little white dot on the crossair.

    Muzzleloader sights

    I agree!

    Muzzleloader sights

I I have a Williams peep and can hit a 10” gong at 250 yards with the fine crossair in the globe and I have the quick adjust nobe for elevation.

    Pine Valley turkey hunting

There are decent numbers if birds on the pine valley unit and the Zion unit as well.

    Pine Valley Dedicated Hunter

I misread thought you were up north. I would never drive north to hunt general mule deer. You will be happy if you put in the time on pine valley.
  33. E

    Pine Valley Dedicated Hunter

Personally I would hunt dedicated hunter closer to home. The advantage of dedicated is being able to scout and scout/hunt all the seasons so driving 4 hours down makes that a lot harder. Also the tag numbers on Pine Valley and Zion are suppose to drop this year and it is possible only one...

    Blackhorn #209 vs Tripple 7

Once you go with bh209 you can’t go back!! Readily available locally for me so I picked up 2 lbs since i should have a Utah muzzleloader tag this year. 777 just does not cut it in my custom .45 (more than half’s my range and adds a lot of fouling).

Places to backpack in southern Utah this time of year?

Escalante, Capitol reef, canyons lands/surrounding, cedar mesa, zion low elevation, sone hidden stuff in Glen canyon. lots of options.

    SW desert Deer

I wouldn’t spend 4 points on SW desert it has a very low population of deer. Unless you plan to scout a lot. Pine Valley, Zion, and panguitch creep thanks to increasing hunters coming to Utah from NV and CA. Luckily I am a resident and normally draw a archery of muzzleloader tag every year.

licensee who can't load their own gun.

Adults should be able to load there own weapon and know all of its functions . Kids I think anything we can do to get them in the field and successful so loading a kids gun is acceptable in my opinion. Only thing mandatory fir kids is firearms safety.

    leaving load in rifle

I have had bh209 loaded in my safe for over a month with first round hits at 300 yards on steel. I typically clean my barrel, pop a primer or 2 in it and reload it and put it in my safe til the next range day or hunt. I also masking tape the barrel and brake to not accidently double load it...

    LATE PINE VALLEY DEER

Expect the deer to be starting to drop for migration. Weather will determine how low they are (Snow is your best friend to concentrate deer lower). Also it’s dry here and currently still hot. The unit has a lot if different habitats. Some deer summer high and some stay low year round. I...

CVA wolf, I paid $125 a few years ago and it's my light backup gun. I have shot Parker BEs out to 250 yards with BH209 and a red dot.
