    6.5CM for cow elk

I shot a bull moose with a .243 and another with a 7-08. Neither one went 5 yards. Doesn't mean it is a good idea. Each time it was the only rifle I owned. (I really wanted to use my bow but on both it came down to the last chance of the season.)

    6.5CM for cow elk

Remember when 300 yds was a long shot? It still is for most people even if they won't admit it. For years Deseret made cow hunters 'qualify' to hunt cow elk. Simple process, hit a blank sheet of paper 2/3 times from 100 yds. No bench, no bullseye. Amazing how many people couldn't do it the first...

    Drought Effects?

This should be a good antler year for much of the west. The winter was very mild allowing the animals to spend more energy in the spring on antlers rather than body recovery. The early spring also allowed for an earlier green up. What may have hurt is if the animals went into the fall in bad...

    Deseret Antlerless Elk

I spent many years up there on the hunts. You can have a very good hunt unguided but you will probably bring the elk out on your back. The guides have packers available with atv's that can get to most places. Sometimes they have packing for a fee. Not sure if that will be true this year. I took...

Is it time for an 80/20 split in Utah

Part of the thought behind the spike hunt is that the yearlings with better genetics will be the 2-points. The rut rifle hunt in the rut is a bigger problem for the future of trophy bulls for me. Killing the best bulls before most of the cows are bred. I had the biologist at that famous big cwmu...

Is it time for an 80/20 split in Utah

So what difference does it make if all the elk are killed as spikes or raghorns? Utah has way more hunters than elk. Utah has very little elk habitat without vehicle access. The only option is to limit permits. As far as the lottery options I have NEVER drawn a tag that I didn't have MAX points...

    Wyoming General

In my experience deer and elk may be in the same general area but use different habitat within that area. They feed on different things and as a general rule bed in different types of cover. Yes, you will see them crossing paths here and there but overall elk displace deer.

    Wyoming elk draw results

Couldn't even draw the cow tag. My buddy did. That's fine. I can concentrate on my UT LE bull

UT Wasatch LE archery elk this year for me

Card just got hit for LE elk and deer on the wasatch. The calendar just slowed WAY down.

    End region G point creep!

WAY MORE deer hunters back then. (Utah stats) 1965 total tags sold: 180,876 Total hunters in the field: 171,466 Number of bucks killed: 51,181 Number of does killed: 24,869 Number of special tags: 27,394 Number of deer killed: 11,993 Bucks: 2,505 Does: 9,488 By the way less than 1000 elk taken...

    End region G point creep!

Simplest way to return big bucks everywhere: No atv's and no scopes over 4x. Most of you don't remember that in the 'glory days' of the 60's most people hunted with open sights, few had 4x4 trucks, nobody had range finders and NOBODY bragged about shooting 800+ yards.

    2021 utah permit recommendations

So wouldn't we still have 2 draw systems? One where all tags go to those with the most points and another that only gives 1/2 the tags to highest points and the others to a random draw? I'm glad I won't be playing any of the game anymore. Give me my last LE archery elk tag this year and I'm...

Where did the 200 permits come from?

When the expo steals 200 of our tags to line their pockets that means on average 20 of those tags will be NR. The con they run is just like the stimulus checks. "We give a million to wildlife!" of course they took in 10 million. "We will give each person $1200!" Of course they are putting each...
