LINK TO WHAT THE HUNT-EXPO AUCTION TAGS SOLD FOR!!!

Wyoming F&G has a tab on their website that lists all the gov and comm tags, which org has them, contact info, how sold, etc. https://wgfapps.wyo.gov/commlicenses/commissionlicense.aspx?year=2024 you have to know its there, but WY is pretty transparent about where they go and what they sell...

LINK TO WHAT THE HUNT-EXPO AUCTION TAGS SOLD FOR!!!

according to the onlinehuntingauctions TOS, the admin fee is only $250 added on to the sale price. This is true whether a WY group sells in as part of something like the Expo or sells it as a standalone action (which a lot of the smaller groups do). Again using WY as an example, most of the...

    2024 Wyoming Commissioners Tag Raffle

the inflation on the commissioner's tags is more than the governor's tags for sure. last year the governor's tags avg $54K, this year $56K last year the comm tags avg $28K, this year so far it's $39K last year there were 72 of them, this year I think 56 so we may not be seeing them go for the...

Western Hunt Expo. What is really going on?

I don't disagree, but this is true everywhere, not just in Utah. Have you checked deer and antelope numbers in WY,CO,NV or AZ recently? They've cratered EVERYWHERE. All the states are taking different approaches and nothing is working. I don't pretend to have an answer for you. Elk are...

Western Hunt Expo. What is really going on?

I haven't been on the RAC for a while now but I've voted to approve these lists in the past though, so that's a fair criticism you can make of me. At least the list is transparent and broken down by individual habit project and one can, presumably, go to that spot and assess for one's self...

rejoice, fans of public lands grazing

my understanding of the outfitting industry is that (for both hunting and rafting) a company buys a permit from the .gov that specifies a hard cap on the number of user-days. and these are 6-7 figure permits depending on the quality of the area. don't sell all your user days? money down the...

rejoice, fans of public lands grazing

from as little as $4 per person up to $100 per person (grand canyon). I'd say the average is $20 per person for most rivers with a lottery draw

rejoice, fans of public lands grazing

three different outfitters (that break it down in the contract), I'm sure others just roll it into the total. FWIW, every permitted river trip I've been on, commercial or private, has also had a "user fee" surcharge per person that adds up to a couple hundred bucks per permit

rejoice, fans of public lands grazing

looking back to prior hunt contracts, it appears to be 3% of the total hunt cost, which for me has ranged from $255 to $426 per hunt, dependent on hunt length

rejoice, fans of public lands grazing

Last year in wyoming I was charged $426 for a 10 day hunt billed as a "public land use fee" (hunting in a wilderness area as a NR so I had to hire a guide. really quite a nice racket!) if I did the math right on a monthly basis, one hunter = 946 cow/calf units

Western Hunt Expo. What is really going on?

this may be the only goat rodeo in town, but it's not the only one that happens in a given year. there are a good handful or two of tag auctions that have a much less scammy sheen to them and are much more upfront as to where the money goes. I tend to stay away from this one but do generally...

    2023 harvest survey

Did I ride out there and look personally ? No Do I know a half dozen guides who did? Yes Did I talk to the mammals coordinator personally about it? Yes Do I have any skin in this game? No. I drew BC bison 4-5 years ago and donated the tag to my son, who killed a toad - one of the original...

    Sleeping in a Pickup

I have a camper shell but also a toolbox, which is not conducive to sleeping stretched out. My solution, and I've used this a bunch of times, is a cross bar plus a plywood sheet that sits atop the crossbar on one end and the toolbox at the other, giving me an elevated platform to sleep on with...

    2023 harvest survey

Yes, I do think the hunter satisfaction index between the Henry and the BC tells the tale. I had a great antelope hunt on a CWMU one year and so went back the next. Year two there were no antelope on the property, probably due to drought, and no one really got to "hunt", not even the operators...

    56 late v. 59 late ?

It's a paid guided hunt with a father-son pair I've hired for all three previous hunts. I phrased it that way because they're not tied to one outfitter and thus we can set up anywhere we decide to go.

First news on Wyoming elk special fee applications

I've hunted Colorado 61 three times in the last five years. I've also hunted Wyoming 55 three times in the last five years. WY tags cost $1500 more than CO (special) WY bulls are 30-80" bigger and the special draw is WAY worth it. And I guess if we're talking about putting our money where...

    56 late v. 59 late ?

I guess this is really what I'm asking. so 59 > 56 with poor snow even though 56 is twice as long of a season? I got a 380+ bull last year in 55 with no snow so I do know it can be done. and yes, I will have a comm tag so I will have a choice to make. I've gotten more advice from this...

    56 late v. 59 late ?

I hesitate to even ask this but you only live once right?:D real life scenario for me: I've hunted 55 multiple times and ridden around in 56 a bit but never in November. Will be going with a family with lifetime experience guiding here. pros / cons of choosing one unit over the other...

    draw question

they way NV runs their draw, you really don't get above 15-19% pure odds even with max points. I've got 20 elk points and am sitting at 5-13% depending on the unit. apparently I'm using up my luck in Wyoming as I've drawn Cody area tags at 5% odds 3 times in 5 years.....

Trailer deck question for all you smart folks

if it's stored under cover even a plain wood deck with marine urethane will last a decade between coats. if it's wet alot or stored where the sun is on it I'd go with the pressure treated even though it'll be way heavier on that long of a trailer

    Powder temp and muzzle velocity

the biggest issue you're facing is that you don't know the powder profile that exists in the factory ammo you're using. there's no way to know without shooting at variable temps. for handloaders there is a bit more data available. TLDR: anticipate a 25-30 fps diff in colder temps compared to...

    Interesting skull injury

I'm finishing up the skull prep on this years elk (in the other thread) and thought I'd share a few pics of his healed skull injury. He got his nose bashed in, which I've seen pretty commonly: More interestingly, he nearly tore his left antler off: there is a ridge of bone overlaying the...
