Unit 42 Whitetail - Any Advice?

Now that things are ramping up, I figured I would resurrect this old thread.....any thoughts on the unit 42 whitetail hunt?

Unit 42 Whitetail - Any Advice?

My dad drew for the unit 42 whitetail hunt. It was pretty much an accident, as it was his last choice, but when he was scrolling down to submit, he was still in the selection box, so he scrolled to a different hunt by accident, and didn't notice until it was too late. Anyhow, according to the...

    >I don't know where you guys >are getting your numbers from >but I just called 700 >licenses sold or 1400 tags... > > >It is still going to be >a mess... > >J- Touche' - My apologies, I read tags, but assumed licenses. Still, as you said though, it's still going to be crazy!

    Ibex hammertime

2,000 licenses - $222k in pocket for NMDGF, assuming only residents. 5 day requirement to report to NMDGF, with 2,000 rifles throwing lead? I think 125 harvested could happen before half the people make it up the mountain! Not that I'm claiming it's easy hunting, but with that many people in...

Hunting on Ghost Ranch? Is it True?

So, is it true that they will be allowing hunting on the Ghost Ranch this year? I heard the outfitters are already camped out. What's the scoop? How did this come about?

    A week in Africa

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-11 AT 00:22AM (MST)[p]Awesome! I spent an hour with Barry on the phone hearing all about it and I gotta say...I started saving for a Mt. Goat hunt in BC and I'm second guessing that right now! That trip sounds like it was amazing!

Give me the basics on mountain goat hunting

That makes a lot of sense. Drop the money right away, (gonna spend it anyway) and get a trophy area to boot. Save extra to take the family out so they can sight see while I hunt. (that helps defer other "costs" in the home!) My son is now 8 years old. I am thinking maybe a 5 or 8 year plan...

Give me the basics on mountain goat hunting

I am completely ignorant when it comes to mountain goat hunting. So I guess I am just looking for the basics. 1) Is this a rich man's game, or are there affordable opportunities out there? 2) Is this like bighorn, where winning the lottery has about the same odds of drawing a tag? 3) Where...

Brow tines - Why is it that.....

Let me throw this in the conversation to see if it adds perspective: Let's say you're one who doesn't count the eye guards, and you kill a net 185 typical buck that has no eye guards. What have you got - a great buck that anybody would be proud to take, and a footnote...."if only he had 5 more...

Brow tines - Why is it that.....

Well! I started this post, and just now got to checking it. Clearly it's a tastes great/less filling debate that will not be resolved. Also, a couple of other points were raised, so since I never gave an opinion, I'll give mine now. 1) Growing up, my family always called them by the total #...

Brow tines - Why is it that.....

So, explain this to me. I was watching a video this past weekend and the guide was counting the points on the buck they downed and the hunter asked about the brow tines and the guide said "those don't count." I have seen this on many occassions either on film or in print where a buck that has...

    Your hunting cloths

Funny, most of my family (that are still above ground) have been hunting since the 1950's. Back then, jeans and flannel, maybe wool if necessary. As the years went by, we started buying camo at army surplus stores, now we buy it wherever it's on sale. Other rules we break: We don't wash...

    300 inch mule deer

This is truly historic. With all the large bulls falling over the last few years, looking at trophy photos actually started to seem a little anti-climactic. And then this buck shows up and sets the world straight by reminding us how magnificent a Muley can be! Congratulations to Kyle and his...

Ryan hatch kills a monster on the strip ?

I say congrats! Great buck Ryan. I too have heard and read all the stories about him, and I'm still gonna give props for his muley skills, as well as his magazine. Kinda funny, everybody seems to comment on his chute plane antics, but never seem to comment on the work he and his team to to...

    Record book hunt:

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-07 AT 08:50AM (MST)[p]I would have to second the Jicarilla. Yeah, there are other areas that have the same genetic potential. In fact, genetically speaking I would say that the Jic is a 9 out of 10, whereas somewhere like the AZ strip could possibly be a 10 out of 10...

    How do you spell CAKTUSK???

Muley or Whitie, I disagree with the cactus theory....looking at his coat and the "fresh look" to the velvet. Then again, I aint no expert, just my .02 worth.

    unit 51 nm elk

51 is terrible, stay away from that unit...no elk for miles!!! Just kidding! Here's my take on 51: Good: Big unit, plenty of elbow room in theory. Bad: Big unit, but many people congregate to the popular areas, so the elbow room theory goes out the door. Good: Good elk numbers Bad...

NM State Record Typical - Broken?

I would agree, but I would still love to see some pics! Also, even pickups make the covers of magazines, and they don't net as high as this one does. I'm not trying to nitpick, just dying to get some info or a pic!!

NM State Record Typical - Broken?

I apologize if this has been discussed or if it is old news, but has anybody noticed that the NM state record typical has been broken, since 2004? I was checking the web site to verify the application deadline. While there I noticed they had a listing of the state records. Well, lo and...

    check this guy's garage out

Take a look at the garage itself - NICE! With a garage like that, who cares why the trophies are relegated to the garage. I'm betting that the trophies are there by his choice. I wonder what's sitting in the rest of the garage, as this guy seems to have some money.....maybe some classic...

    new gun

Sako I've got a Rem, Weatherby Vanguard, and Sako. By far, I prefer the Sako over the rest. They are all accurate enough, although the Sako will outdo the others, and I'm not a great shot. But the Sako feels the best, by far the best trigger (the Rem is the worst), the smoothest bolt, etc...

    NM proposed regulations

I agree with the point restriction, however I remember when they first instituted it, a know a co-worker who with his own eyes saw 3 forkers that were left for dead up in unit 2B. This is a good unit, so those hunters may have been succesful otherwise, so it's possible 6 deer were taken on 3...

    Remington Core-Lokt Rocks!!!

I took my first bull last year with a .300 win mag, 180 gr. Core-Lokt's. One shot, fell right in his tracks. No complaints here....well, maybe one....if he hadn't fallen right away, it would have been a shorter pack out, as he was moving towards the truck when I shot him.

NM Unit 6C Bull Landowners Permit Available

Snowman is correct; the permit is good for the listed rifle and muzzleloader hunts. There is no bow hunt on this permit.

NM Unit 6C Bull Landowners Permit Available

Rifle: Oct. 15-19 Oct. 22-26 Nov. 5-9 Muzzleloader: Oct. 1-5 Plus I think it is good for an either sex bow hunt, but I will have to double check. Keep in mind that one of the hunts has to be chosen, you can't hunt each of the listed hunts. When you take the landowners permit into the G&F...
