Idaho Sawtooth Elk Zone tag distribution

I think the demand stems from it being a unit with an Oct 15 opener close to town with a populous of about a million. Concurrent Deer/Elk seasons before winter weather creates a lot of opportunity. Leave it as is and switch the Boise river zone to an Oct. season

    Sawtooth Zone Elk tags 2017

Tag quotas sure have made the Sawtooth zone a great local hunt in terms of crowds!

    Drew the wrong unit...

What TW said. In anticipation for applying for the 33-1 deer tag, I scouted that unit starting last November through to March of this year when they started migrating back up. I saw a lot of cows and a few young spikes, it wouldn't hurt to bring a limited cow hunt back ;) I saw mature bulls...

Idaho Capped General Season Tags to Non Residents?

This will be intereting how it plays out. The tags are limited because the unit isn't meeting the population objectives. The quota wasn't intended to increase quality, but has inherently resulted in a quality hunt, not necessarily trophy quality, but simply less competition and crowds. There are...

How much growth will a 170+ Buck have by June? If his main beam doesn't forks til his ear tips, is it a good indicator?

    Idaho Unit 27-5 Mountain Goat

They have lost about all their winter fur right now and are funny looking with short hair. With decent glass you will be able to see the nads on a Billy this month and next. I found that to be easier than trying to judge the horns or waiting for one to piss. Also the young billy's and nanny's...

First Timer - Archery Mule Deer - Idaho

The Frank Church has solitude and Backcountry, but not Deer numbers as compared to other areas. If you scout it then it could be worth the time. My understanding is that there is no early Archery, at least in unit 27, the Rifle opens Sept 15 though. You will see more Deer in the zones to the...

??? of the Day - Early or Late Season Archery Hunting

Good discussion. So between a Velvet Muley in his summer routine and a rut crazed Muley chasing Does all day. I like the early seasons better because I feel I'm a more efficient hunter. The weather is not an issue, gear is lighter, and those redish coats with furry antlers stick out against the...

My dads deer and late 39 ideas

Thats a couple great bucks. I'm giving this hunt a try for the first time tomorrow. The snow is pretty deep in town, whats the reality of access tomorrow morning for this hunt? Do they plow the middle fork and/or blacks creek roads?

    You will not believe this!!!

That's Hilarius, I bet by the time he got to the top of the grade coming out of horseshoe bend the bottom of that deer was cooked.

    Idaho LAP Changes

Is this new LAP program going to effect primarily the nonmigratory resident animals that are basically farmed on the large private land holdings in the first place or will it effect the migratory animals that grow the expensive headgear in the summer range on public land and are then monetized...

    Deer 44

It's a controlled hunt with a lot of country opened up for glassing, I think the harvest will be great this year for those that hunt it right. The Geomac site will show you the approximate burn areas. http://www.geomac.gov/index.shtml

    2 Zone Elk specifics

I would end up hunting McCall in October and Boise river in November, and I know a lot of other hunters would do the same thing. So I was against it during the public feedback session. It would certainly lead to overcrowding in some of the zones.

    Frank church wilderness

I had the November tag last season and ended up trading it in for the general season tag so I could hunt the Sept 15 opener in the high country as well as the the rest of the general season in Oct in other areas. I liked what I saw in the summer range as far as past fire activity and the few...

    Unit 27-1 Sheep Advice

I'm considering applying for this hunt. It seems that the sheer vastness of the wilderness could grow an old Ram. Can this hunt be done by backpacking into the wilderness from a trailhead?

    39 early buck....big bulls n bears

The Bucks I have been seeing in the last few weeks have been as high as possible. Try glassing the steep rugged south/easterly slopes in the mornings on the taller mountains or at the end of the canyons in your area. It will sometimes take all morning to catch a glimpse but they are there. I...

    Early Middlefork Deer

Thanx for the reply, that's close to what I saw while scouting. In 4 days I saw 2 Bucks both on the 3rd day. The 4th day I heard the wolves. Almost no Elk sign and not much deer sign. I had a great time though and I will be going back for the bigger Buck and Wolves. There is for sure easier...
