    Hole in the horn

I once shot a bedded buck from about 40 yds right in the forehead, he never got out of his bed, I walked up and was getting my knife and tag out but that thing would not stop kicking, after about 5 minutes I realized he was still breathing, then I noticed the bullet had just cut a notch in the...

    ATV Survey

You’ve obviously never spent any time over on the hunting-Washington forum. Did you know that it doesn’t matter if a road is gated in Idaho, you can just ride your 4 wheeler around it, that’s the law, at least according to everyone from Washington.

    A new low

A game warden would probably care if they are flying and hunting the same day🤷🏼‍♂️ only way this would be legal is if they are hunting behind a high fence or they skydive, wait 24 hours and then hunt

    Idaho wildlife federation

If you can’t enforce a law then by virtue you must allow the things those laws would effect, so they were going to force all the modern muzzy tech on IDFG. As I said above the legislature needs to stay out of IDFG dealings and continue to ruin other things first. At least one of the legislators...

    Idaho wildlife federation

Looks like the bill forcing IDFG to adopt 209’s, sabots and scopes on muzzleloaders got killed

    Idaho wildlife federation

Both of these are beyond ridiculous and the legislature needs to stick to screwing up education, taxes and infrastructure rather than trying to delve into wildlife management

Another one of those issues Utah sportsmen need to pay real close attention to

Or guilty of murder for shooting a deer, which is why hunters need to be paying attention to things like this

    Bessy’s Alcatraz Buck

Maybe JJ wanted to make sure he killed the biggest buck on the island so he paid off UDWR to hold the tag, and the results and not charge him until 2 days into the hunt

Non Res tags, how does it all work ???

Gotta love the “new hunters always draw” conspiracy, this is the first time I’ve read/heard it expressed in this particular form though so 👍 for making me laugh for a second

    Nebraska Public Land Success

Your season sounds about like mine thus far, lots of hunts that should be slam dunks and haven’t been, unfortunately I’m out of new opportunities this year.

How was your bear meat this year

Just think you could have shot a bear and not been wondering how they tasted. My bear was pretty good, got it in the spring, never had a bad spring bear yet

    Bummer

Well crap, at least in reading the press report it sounds like IDFG is going to take a measured approach this time and not wage all out war on the deer in this unit

How bad does it have to get

I really like to hear the nonresidents cry though ? In all seriousness I am with you nonresidents aren’t the problem, but before we go limiting resident tag numbers thereby excluding some from hunting each year, maybe let’s limit where people can hunt. A zone system seems to work well for elk...

    Deer Population Unit 31

Yes we understand, they don’t actually hand the tag over, I’ve also known for 20+ years that if you’re willing to pay a large “trespass fee” you can get a tag to hunt deer in unit 45. The correlation between prestige of a draw hunt and dollar amount of trespass fee is all I need to know what is...

It’s time for a real discussion

I also think one drawback to the current system aside from how many bucks get shot is how many of our better deer producing areas are over hunted to the point that deer go into the winter in bad shape and are not able to survive. Unit 39 as an example, it’s everybody’s fallback unit because it’s...

    New to Idaho unit 39

Just go up roaring river rd, there will be 200 other vehicles lined up along the first 3 miles of the road glassing, wait for your forky to come off the ridge to the east and make sure you have 1000 feet of rope to pull it up your side of the river to the road

It’s time for a real discussion

I honestly don’t think the 2nd tags have that much effect, I’ve had one for the last 6 or 8 years and I think I filled 2 in that time. I do think that if too many people continue to complain about pressure and wanting a draw we will get that and that is absolutely not anything I want to see...

    Nevada land swap

If you’ve ever driven through that part of Nevada, I can pretty much guarantee you there is no difference in the 85,000 acres they are giving up and the 235,000 they are trying to get. It’s all rocks and sage. I cannot for the life of me see how this could ever be seen as a fair trade by anybody...

It’s time for a real discussion

I just don’t think the number of nonresident tags is the issue, I think at some point as a resident I have to be willing to give 1/2 of my pie(all general units to hunt) in order to keep the other 1/2(a general deer tag to hunt every year). The population of our state is growing at a rapid pace...

It’s time for a real discussion

I can’t argue with any of this, however I do have hope that with some of the new treatments for cheatgrass we can start to turn habitat around. I also didn’t intend for this to turn into a back and forth pissing match, I was hoping to see what kind of support could be had for an idea like this...

It’s time for a real discussion

I’ve never understood the logic of the 2 point hunts. Think about how good those units could be even if they just offered 200 tags for the October season for any buck then the November hunts. Instead they allow about 1500 1 1/2 year old bucks to be killed each year and only about 300 mature...

It’s time for a real discussion

Even mule deer could be hunted on a regular tag from Aug 30-Dec 31 by hunting just 4-5 different units. Literally any day in that window. Like I said zone out regular tags, leave the whitetail tag as is. I hardly see anybody where I hunt but that’s because I hunt crappy spots ? it’s more fun...

  35. andrew12gauge

It’s time for a real discussion

You obviously still can’t read, where did I mention a draw with multiple choices. We have the model in our current elk tag distribution. The state is broken into zones, a resident can buy a tag for any zone they choose, with a few limitations. No draw, no points, everybody that wants gets a tag.

It’s time for a real discussion

I swear some of you need to work on reading comprehension, go back, reread my first post. I’m not calling for a draw system and implementation of points as many out there are. I would like to see us give the tinyest bit of current opportunity in order to continue to have OTC opportunity every...

It’s time for a real discussion

Part of turning that declining deer herd around is managing by units, which is not something IDFG has done. Also imagine what they could do with actual mandatory harvest reporting, you don’t report your hunting activity one season, you don’t get a tag the next. I’ve spoken with biologists who...

It’s time for a real discussion

Actually some of the unlimited controlled hunts have a 10% cap based on prior years resident trends. Speaking of limiting nonresidents though, imagine how much lower the tag numbers would be in some units if the total tags available to nonresidents weren’t based off of double counting...
