    54 Elk Rifle

I was just in there helping a friend with his cow elk tag. He filled it Sunday morning there were multiple bulls with the herd and they were bugling. By 8:30 am they were in the trees and disappeared Saturday so Sunday we used a road that came in behind them got there 5 minutes before legal...

    Vap elite SS/Vap elite TKO

I shot the Vap ss last year with the 95gr insert to get the foc higher. It put me at 536gr arrow at 265fps. They worked great, but the arc at 265fps vs 295fps (my old arrows) cost me a 6x7 bull when I clipped a branch that at 295fps wouldn't have been a problem. I switched to Gold Tip Kintec...

    Pronghorn 40, 41, 42

Set up my blind and saw 2 nice bucks and 5-6 does which is pretty typical. It's huge country out there and there's water everywhere especially with the thunderstorms last week. Keep looking you'll find them.

    Pronghorn 40, 41, 42

It took me 7 years of hunting there to finally find a waterhole that wasn't to close to a road. "Scouting" in February for any big game is a waste of time as far as Scouting is concerned. Those big "herds" on the winter range break up come spring time and the mature bucks start claiming their...

Unfortunately the chipmunk association has locked up their property since 2015 they own a big chunk of land northwest of silver city. It's where I hunted when I had the tag in 2014

    Maps of unit 45

If you have OnX it shows you camp grounds. A quick 30 second scan and I found some around magic reservoir. I highly suggest learning how to use OnX. You can way point blood trails, beds, where you need to turn. I've used the ruler to measure water holes or across canyons and have found it to be...

    Unit 41 Mule Deer

    Unit 40 Late Deer

I find it hilarious that people think that the two point only hunt is wiping out all the bucks. Come November there's always post about how there's only small bucks. I've had the archery tag and I saw at least one mature buck over 26" every day. I took my wife out there 2 years ago for a easy...

    Unit 41 Mule Deer

My friend had that tag last year. We only saw 1 22" 4 point. He spent two weeks out there. He started at the Nevada border and worked his way up. Tons of 2 points, I thought they all got shot in the general hunt according to the popular opinion about 2 point only hunts. I've also elk hunted it...

    Which arrows?

I tried the victory vaps ss elites last year with a 90gr insert 100 gr tips. They are expensive but they don't bend like I've seen the fmj's do. I got my foc up and overall weight up as well. 29.5" arrow total weight was 536 fps foc was close to 15٪ and the bow got quite a bit quieter. I shot...

    Idaho Sawtooth Planning

I thought 39 was crowded until I went to 43 what a zoo. 39 is such a huge unit you just have to go where everyone is not and you'll find animals sometimes you don't have to go to far to get away.

    6.5CM for cow elk

A 6.5cm with 127gr barnes LRX at 300yds has 1400 foot pounds of energy. A 308 with 168 gr barnes LRX has 1800 foot pounds of energy. There are many that believe 1800ft-lbs of energy is the minimum amount needed to cleanly kill a elk. The 6.5 creedmoor loses that at 150 yards. With a 140 barnes...

The antelope move north towards their winter range pretty early in that country. There's quite a lot of antelope but they move from their usual summer grounds where everbody is used to seeing them.

    Ruger American Predator

My friend has that exact rifle and it likes the cheap federal 180 soft pionts. I shot a 3 shot group at 200yds that was under a half inch I was blown away. I bought one in the 22-250 calibur. I reload and it shoots just about anything I've loaded into tiny little groups for a $400 gun their...

Idaho Unit 39 vs Unit 40 General Deer

39 for kids should be a slam dunk being able to shoot either sex. Just wait until the last two weeks when most of the road hunters are gone. If you have to go out opening day I'd go to 42 or 41 any place with water is will have deer somewhere around it. Just a hint, use your binoculars not...

2nd Big Game Application Period Aug .5-15

A guy I know applied for a tag that I've been trying to draw for 15 years very low draw odds. Well his kid drew the youth tag last year and I took them out. The kid was excited and shot a 2 piont the second day, it was his first buck. So the dad drew it this year and wasn't going to pick up...

    nock points ?

If you have to ask maybe you shouldn't be doing it. WapitiBob's advice is correct but that should have been pretty obvious. UNIT 39 early rifle deer/archery elk info swap

Well I have the tag this year. That's why I was asking the op how it went. I ride dirt bikes and hunt 39 a lot and have seen elk all over but usually I'm hunting in November and riding in the spring to early summer. And have never hunted the rut in September yet, to say the least I'm super excited.

    Nonresident general tags sold out

Every year I'm out 42 antelope hunting or taking a new hunter out for their first deer and almost always see a big buck or two (big as in 26" wide and 5yrs old roughly) out there on a one or two day trip. I don't know how anyone can't go out there and find bucks. I can't believe you guys think...

    Archery Antelope Tag Structure Changes

Any weapons odds are going to be even lower. And people will still be fighting over the same waterhole during archery and complaining that there's to many people. And some will say we need a point system. Oh and I don't like this idea at all

    Seriously?

I used to think it mattered what the animals ate. Whitetails generally being around farm land should taste better. Where as a desert muley shot down by the Idaho/ Nevada border with nothing but sagebrush to see for miles should be gamey. But have never found that to be true. It's all about the...

Hammond did you have binoculars? I was in the danskins Saturday and stopped counting deer after a hundred. Only saw two mature bucks a nice 4 and a nice 3 point 22-24 wide 10-15 little bucks. But I was looking for a cow elk probably why I saw 2 bulls and all the deer. Ha

    Mule deer

I spent the 26-29 of Oct in 39. I saw 30-40 deer a day and 3-4 bucks every day. No mature bucks but I wasn't in an area I expected to see them either. Watched people every day ride their 4 wheelers right by deer.
