    Best mountain man/Wild West books

Just finished “Jim Bridger- Mountain Man” a biography by Stanley Vestal. It covers his entire life. Interesting read and informed me on quite a bit I had no idea about. I’d recommend it.

    Unit 68

I was up there a few years ago on a third season hunt and it dumped. Luckily I had a four-wheeler but chains would be a must have to get around otherwise. There was one guy who must’ve slid his truck into a tree because the front of his truck was smashed.

    Wood River Ranch elk

I’m hoping to get some opinions on first hand experience with them. I’m looking at 2024. This would be an all in type scenario for me. Between my meager earnings and never going to be in a preference point position like this ever again, I really want to make this count. Looking for the...

    Maven 12x50 vs 12x42

The trade off with that much magnification in a 42 is smaller exit pupil diameter (think low light performance). You won’t be getting that image just “popping up” effect as well with a smaller objective and high magnification. The point I’m trying to make, I’d definitely go 50.

    Burnt euro help

I self admittedly screwed the pooch and fell asleep on the job resulting in all the water cooking off inside the metal tub I was using to do a euro on this year’s buck. I’ve done several in the past with great success so I’m going to chalk this up to complacency. The skull is no longer and the...

    Utah general elk tags

I started trying right at 08:00 and it took me until 1:30 to get one. That was after getting kicked out on the final payment screen once and using 3 computers, an iPad, and my phone waiting. This was a big win for the DWR. Now next year they can institute a point system for general season...

Out of box most accurate hunting rifle.

If you can stretch the budget just a hair more, Sportsmans Warehouse has the Nosler M48 Liberty on sale in 28 Nosler caliber for $1,300. Kill anything in North America with a gun that has features typically found on custom guns.

    Call Mike Lee NOW!

Romney and Lee voted nay. I had sent both a message in favor of the act prior to the vote.

17 NR points on a North Slope, Summit buck deer tag!? Ouch.

    What tags did you get?

Cashed in my points for 261-268 buck deer tag during November.

What should I be looking for?

Cameraland (a sponsor here on MM, and even if they weren't I'd highly recommend them) has a smoking deal on some Meopta rifle scopes right now. I have a pair of their binos and they are top notch. Way above the glass you've mentioned.

    Best Options

You?re in a tough spot. Just a few years behind for a Pauns hunt and too many invested to squander on a lesser hunt. If you can swing the price of a guide to get you on private, I'd consider Diamond Mtn.

    Best "Functional" Camo Pattern?

What's with the new trend of guys wearing fishing camo while in a boat? Seems like wearing camo to shoot from a truck.

kuiu icon pro 5200 vs MR Metcalf

Several years ago I looked at Kuiu and MR both closely. I went with the Metcalf when it was new. They?ve actually improved on the design since then. It may be little heavier than some of the ultralight options out there but I'd rather sacrifice a few more ounces of pack weight that allow me...

I have extra WYO elk points...

    >Point sharing reduces point creep for >harder to draw units. Exactly my thoughts as well. There?s a log jam at the top tier units. It takes max points to even have a chance on 13 of the elk units. If some dude wants to squander over half a decade worth of waiting and fees, go for it, please.

68 will be loaded with OTC elk hunters. Keep that in mind.

What To Do With 8 pts?

I'd for sure use them regardless of what season you decide. Having been to Colorado a couple times as a NR on mule deer hunts, I agree with the theory of hunting there more often instead of building a couple decades worth of points and gambling it on just one hunt. With weather being such an...

Haven?t spoke to anyone there yet, just sending out feelers right now. The gun I'd be sending is a Remington 700 BDL in .338 RUM.

Yes. 10 points essentially gets you 10 extra names in the hat whereas 1 gets you one extra.

I've had a Gerber saw for years and really like it. Long enough to actually get a decent stroke, not heavy, and doesn't take up much pack space.

    Yeti drops NRA

LAST EDITED ON Apr-24-18 AT 08:43AM (MST)[p]NRA is in the business of politics. Yeti is in the business of making money. They seem to have the advertising and branding game down to a science. Can't see them biting the hand that feeds them with most of their customers being sportsmen.

    Montana Sucker's Bet

I too bailed out when they changed the game a few years ago. Just flushed those points away. I did the math and saw it was not worth the gamble. Notice I didn't use the word investment because it likely would have never payed off.

    Rob Bishop on Meateater, thoughts.

Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but keeps swearing up and down he's platypus. That's good old Bobby Bishop for you. Pretty sure he'd rent out his wife at the whorehouse on nickel night if it'd fetch him a dollar. At about the 1:15 mark when he says his apartment could be reclaimed as...
