If you're truly looking for a fun hunt with kids, 81 would be tough to beat. Lots of antelope on public and more as season progresses. There are some nice bucks, but you would need to sort through lots and lots and lots of bucks to find a truly big one.

Horrible winter in SE Montana. Worse with each April snowstorm. Enjoy a combat hunt with a thousand other people for a genetically superior 2.5 year old deer.

Predators are a non factor in the Castles. An occasional wolf pack will move through, but populations are way over objective. Most elk are on private in archery and rifle. Bide your time near the boundary and you will have encounters. Small bulls likely. Occasional big bull, but would not...

Hunt near irrigated agriculture and you'll find some deer. Don't expect to see many deer or deer older than 2.5 years old. Enjoy it for what it is, and you'll have a fun time. Hope your friend gets into hunting, and thanks for his military service.

Good point, littlebighorn. Unfortunately, giant deer are killed every year out the window of a pickup. As they say, it's better to be lucky than good. Do you think the buck in your story was still with younger deer, using them to tip him off without being seen? Or, do you think he changed...
