    game processor

When we hunted 75 we used Renigs and was the best processing I've encountered. Very clean, friendly and professional. A little out of the way, but worth it.

    A Zone Buck

It has been pretty quiet in here so I'll post a pic of my son's buck from earlier this week. He's the first in the family to punch a tag this year and it was on a good one. He had been keeping an eye on this guy and his larger buddy, but unfortunately his buddy didn't make it past the opener...

    Cache creek bull

As mentioned above, Josh Bush is the bio up there and will definitely have the best insight. Nearly all the elk are on private, but hopefully he knows of some on the pockets of public land. Good luck!

So, who got drawn in Cali?

Nothing, just an A zone tag as the booby prize.

    Youth deer application

You need to put him in on his 1st deer tag application for an X zone as 1st choice and then something that doesn't fill as his second choice. Then, put him in for an apprentice hunt as his first choice on his 2nd deer tag application and either refund or another tag choice thar doesn't fill.

M11, pillsbury elk and Lassen antelope...going for the random on each of them.

    Thoughts on X2 this year

X2 is a shadow of what it used to be. The main issue now is access. Collins timber has all of the great area locked up and has created a sanctuary over the past 5yrs. I'd hold out for x5b or one of the muzzy hunts...

160 Barnes in front of IMR4831 has been a killer in my 7mm.

    Waterfowl Season

It was better than last year, but still 3rd worse season in at least the last 15. Had a couple of good shoots, but most were single digit trips.

    My 3rd season observations

I'm assuming your talking about colorado and I agree. I hunt the same unit and have no desire to deer hunt there anymore. Last year most of the bucks I saw were smaller than the b zone blacktails I saw here in CA. We're heading to unit 3 for 4th season elk this year and I'm curious as to the...

Ground meat bees in GMU 67

The paper nest posted by bluehair is actually from bald faced hornets and believe it or not they are your friend when it comes to yellow jackets. Here in northern CA when I'm skinning a deer and the meat bees are around I can't wait until the hornets show up. Within about 10 minutes the number...

NE CALI Elk Youth Hunt Success 6x7

Since your son's reading...first off, congratulations on an awesome bull! Secondly, congratulations to pops for getting you out there! It's hard to imagine now, but when you have a kid and take them out and watch them be successful, especially with an awesome animal like your elk, the feeling...

    A zone success

Well, I finally got to be "that" guy..you know the guy that gets to camp and goes out and gets one right away. My oldest was up a day early and said he had only seen a couple does. Once we got the tent up about 4pm I told the wife let's go down the hill from camp and check things out. Within...

    No gun range to minors

Yes you can and should. This law is BS, and won't do any good. It targets people/companies that advertise specifically to minors. An advertisement for a shotgun with a scene of a guy duck hunting is perfectly legal under this law...but an advertisement with a Minion character using new ammo...

    Archery A Zone

Heading up Friday. Now that I'm retired I'm planning to spend opening week up in the woods. Was thinking about a blind, but I think spot and stalk will be the preferred method. Too damn hot to be in a blind for hours. Good luck!

    Meat processor

Not sure if they're still in business or if they're only open during hunting season, but Reinigs in Riverton did 3 antelope for me 4yrs ago and they did an unbelievable job. All vacuum sealed and cut to perfection.

    New to spring Bears...

We're heading to Oregon for spring bear at the end of the month. This will be the first time hunting spring bear so we're looking forward to it. Maybe a new hunt to add in the annual rotation.

    Spring Thunder

Didn't get drawn for anything, but luckily have a plan B. Birds have been strutting and gobbling for about 2 weeks here in the northern valley. I'm old school and don't really buy into the hype of all the new chokes and loads.. I use 12ga 3" hevishot #5's in a factory full choke with great...

    .338 Win Mag Elk/Moose Load.

For some reason my rifle doesn't care for the 225's, although I have only used the powders you mentioned so maybe there's another powder that will perform with the 225's. I had to shoot copper on an elk hunt on a military base and switched over to 210 Barnes and my rifle absolutely loves them...

    NDOW Updated Website

I called them 2 weeks ago about it and the gal on the phone laughed and said they're having just as hard of a time using it. She suggested giving it a couple "weeks" until everything was transferred over, but it appears that it's still a mess.

    Family Fun! Thanks Wyoming

Yes, Yes and Yes....very awesome!!! Wife and daughter harvest bucks and the rest of the family there to witness. That is exactly what it's all about! Congrats to you and your family! These memories will be relived in their minds (and yours) for the rest of their lives.

    Last deer tags filled

Well, my youngest boy and I have filled our deer tags. It's been awhile since I've taken a deer in CA since my boys always get first shot or at least first decision on whether or not they want it. Most years we don't get enough opportunities to fill their tags and get me at the plate. This...

    2021 Blackbear

Mostly yes to both questions. Rifle opens when the deer rifle seasons open except for the Sierra Nevada X zones which doesn't open until 10/9. Archery in all zones opens 8/21. The regs seem unnecessarily complicated for bear, but they spell it out pretty clearly on the DFW website.

    2021 Blackbear

I keep a couple roasts for slow cooking in either a stew or enchilada sauce for wet burritos. The rest I have ground with pork fat and then I add chorizo seasoning for the best chorizo. My bear chorizo has actually made several guys in my club now get bear tags.

    2021 Blackbear

While I was sitting waiting for the end of shoot time and bored after spending a couple of deerless days I noticed a black spot amongst the blackberries that wasn't there before. A nice bear had decided to grab a bite to eat about 45 minutes before the end of shoot time so I quickly got into...
