Recommended Sheep Hunting Guides in the Frank

Just google "Frank Church Bighorn Sheep Guide." There aren't many companies that guide sheep there. Call them, talk to them about whichever unit(s) they guide, and go from there.

It’s time for a real discussion

I hear what you are saying about turning more hunts into unlimited draws. It's still a tough pill to swallow, and moves us more in the direction that we all don't want to go. I think we could target certain hunts with that approach right now. Take the 39 archery hunt for example. Make it an...

    Fingers Crossed for the Deer

Well, we're at about the most critical part of an average winter. I can't imagine things are looking great within the deer herds, but I have not been keeping tabs on the herds. Any reports out there?

    Unit 48

How about the border with 43 since you know 43? I take it you are a nonresident, so you may want to keep tabs on the winter the wood river drainage experiences. A LOT of snow already, subzero temps for the near future, and we are only in mid-December. That deer herd will probably take a beating...

    Fingers Crossed for the Deer

The weather patterns lately are eerily similar to what preceded snowmaggedon. If we get significant storms in January, the deer may be in for a pretty rough winter. Love the water, but hate to see the impact on mulies.

    Hard to imagine

Every morning deer hunting this year was below zero. I love it that way.

    Good ole Idaho

That's what I'm saying. If nonres unit quotas (for the current general seasons) were put into a draw format, there would be no general seasons for nonres to apply for. They'd all have to pick a controlled hunt unit (hopefully one species) to apply for, and that would alleviate some of the...

    Good ole Idaho

I certainly don't like the idea of Idaho moving closer to a draw for everything. But the nonresident issue is already a draw, and seems to be pretty inefficient. So let's drop the nonresident quotas per unit down to a round number (if a unit currently has 57 nonresident tags allocated, drop it...

    Bone saw suggestions

My "kill kit" is a folding Benchmade with a gut hook attachment. Blade is probably 2.5". I will pack the bones in on the front quarters unless we are truly backpack hunting way the hell back there. But I pull the femurs. No saw needed since I euro mount about every skull anymore.

    Tuna!!!

Exactly. The deckhand is a bit obnoxious. A lot more people, rods, and lines on the cattle boats out of San Diego, and a lot less chaos than that boat

    Maps of unit 45

If you're in Boise, Idaho Blueprint has the 1.5 minute topos. I believe you can also order from USGS. I used to spend lunch hours in Idaho Blueprint pouring over maps. I have some of my favorite spots framed in my office. But OnX and google earth really do make them obsolete these days

    1029 Deer tag

Like most things in life, this tag and unit are not what they once were. That time of year, bucks are very scattered and don't show themselves much in the sunlight. Bust your ass in the heat running ridges and hope you see a buck, or sit on a basin and hope there is a needle in the haystack...

I agree that limiting applications to certain species instead of all three would increase odds. It's kind of a no brainer.

Close family friend drew 41 Bull. There's plenty of my boot leather on the rocks in that unit, but if you have the urge to share info, don't hesitate to PM me.

    OIL Refunds!

I would gladly pay the resident price and have it be non-refundable. I agree it would cause odds to improve, by how much who knows. I don't want hunting to become any more of a rich man's sport than it already is, but no one is hunting sheep or goats for food (even though sheep are delicious).

    Bill Moves Foward

Maybe I'm more of a traditionalist (even though I shoot a compound). I certainly wouldn't trust a mechanical broadhead on western game. Heck, I've watched bull elk shrug off a shoulder hit with a fixed broadhead like not much happened. I'm opposed to lighted knocks because we already have...

    Controlled Hunt Management Idea

I would support it for mule deer, but I'm all for harvesting as many whitetails as we can. Most of the shots I get at whitetail bucks are fairly fleeting, and a four point restriction would mean I kill less whitetails.

What effect will removing lion quota have?

My hunting partner killed one this fall on a chance encounter while we were elk hunting. I had never put much thought into targeting lions, but after eating some pulled lion slider sandwiches, my interest has dramatically increased.

Good Units to Consider for Mule Deer?

If you are a resident, pull out the regs look at the general archery deer hunting seasons. There is an entire season section dedicated solely to general archery. I'd pick something close to home. That way you can hunt more often and increase your chances to encounter game while building your...

    Sheep unit 46

What are you wanting to hunt in 46? Sheep - odds are pretty poor and you get one in your lifetime. Elk - odds are worse than sheep. Deer - you might draw a tag once every ten years.

ID Residents, did the new NR tag quotas make a difference?

That's why I've all but given up hunting mule deer. Just like them too much and feel bad for what our herds have to deal with. I have no problem putting the hurt on whitetails, though. Especially as they continue their march south of the Salmon River

    Unit 21 mulies

Every unit in central Idaho holds mature bucks. Finding them won't be easy, and deer densities are likely much lower than you're anticipating. You could get lucky and shoot a nice buck on the first morning of your hunt. But in reality, if you want to be successful on mature mule deer in OTC...

    Dogs in Wolf Country

With as many yahoos as there are in Idaho anymore, I'd put an orange vest on your dog. I have a Duck Tolling Retriever (bred to look like a fox) and I won't even think about a pheasant hunt without an orange vest on her
