SE Utah general unit vs Colorado units

Colorado always has been the" best muley state". Look at the record book. They blow away every other state. But like everywhere else, mule deer quality and quantity is down. You will definitely have a better hunt in Colorado than a general Utah unit, including San Juan Abajo.

    RMEF Castle Rock May 4th

It sounds like a fun time. If I didn't live 800 miles away, I'd be there. I love to raise money for sheep, and I love Nothing bundt Cakes!

    elk question

elkhunter is right about bull size marley. Utah doesn't hold the giant bulls of the past. I hunted the SJ on the early rifle two years ago and in a week of hunting, I only saw two 350 bulls and nothing bigger. Any of those units would be a fun hunt, but he may want to crank down his size...

    What would you do?

Most of us can't relate to your "Great problem" SS, and NONE of the rest of us have 100 days in the mountains already booked. That many days sounds a lot like "work", which it probably is on most days. With that in mind, I'd probably go with the hunt that would be most relaxing and satisfying...

    What would you do?

If it were me, I'd make time for both. I can't imagine what it would be like to take two sheep in one year! Easy decision for most of us that can't get a sheep tag, even every decade. I know that's not what you are asking, so back to your question. I'd take the one that's less crowded. I...

    Backfire Milk Jug Challenge

Yes they can use range finders, but must do it on their own. No one calling their wind or range etc. It's a pretty telling video for those who think they just gotta buy a turret scope and a range finder and they are good to go at 1K.

    Backfire Milk Jug Challenge

I'm surprised this has not come up, but I think it's a pretty fun and informative youtube watch. The moderator of the Backfire youtube channel Jim Harmer, has put out a challenge for guys to hit milk jugs with hunting rifles in hunting conditions. ie wind, finding their own range, etc. The...

Have you been, or plan to, go bear hunting? (Poll)

My son has a tag this year so we will be out in a few weeks to see what turns up. It's a San Juan tag but with all the tags they have given down there, the big bears have been really thinned out.

    Powder Prices Going Up

Supply and demand makes prisoners of us all, as long as we think we just have to obtain something. Alliant 26 is great powder, but it's not that great! Deep breaths and make do, if we want prices to get back down.

    Nontypical mtn goat

I know at one point that unit had way too many goats, so they took a bunch off to supplement and start new herds. In addition high permit numbers took that unit way down in population, which was probably needed for the health of the herd. Now, however, I see they only give one tag on that...

    Reloading?

If you don't have someone to mentor you, reloading may have a pretty steep learning curve. Getting your neighbor to help was a suggestion I was about to make, but Brian beat me to it. Reloading is also like anything else. You can go all out crazy with lots of steps and gadgets, or you can keep...

    HEY Lumpy / efa???

I recall some of the units being closed for less than 5 years Bess. I wanna say the Pauns only closed 3? Could be wrong. I'm also pretty sure the Vernon closed for only a couple because I hunted it when it opened back up. Lots of young bucks but nothing much with age. They also issued like...

    What Trips Your Trigger?

It used to be width for me, but then I shot a 32" buck with short forks and he's a little disappointing. My best buck breaks 200 with 44" mass, but he's only 27" wide. I'd choose him first.

    How old is this ram?

Yup, He's a beautiful old ram. 12-13 from what I see, but pics don't always show it all. And having two Bighorn tags in one year is still simply outrageous luck!

    Nonresident antelope hunt ?

Pretty much every person on this forum would love to hunt an antelope on public land, and with limited tags everywhere, your question might fall on lots of dead ears. I don't know any state that has over the counter antelope permits and most states take several years to draw in a unit with...

Unit 54 vs 55, 2nd Rifle Mule Deer

None of the Gunny Basin units are anywhere near where they once were. Winter kill, too many tags, late seasons have taken their tole on all of them. Elk hunters stirring everything up is also a problem. If you are set on finding a really good buck you need to just pick a unit and go hunt...

    Ram score?

I've been fooled more than once while judging trophies, so I thought those poor angle pics would be a fun and educational post. While I have had some trophies shrink in the dirt, I have surprisingly, had more that have grown on the ground. I like that the best but I also shudder thinking what I...

Unit 54 vs 55, 2nd Rifle Mule Deer

54 was a zoo with elk hunters. We didn't see a buck over 3-4 years old. I ate tag soup on my second season hunt two years ago, and that was with an early snow storm.

Taker or No? How wide and what does he score?

I can't imagine anyone not shooting that buck in a 10 point unit, unless they know of something bigger. As has been mentioned, looking from behind for width is a recipe for disappointment, but I'm with others that he is pushing 30 but maybe not quite there. He's not real heavy but I also think...

I recently found those photos of my Utah ram just before I shot him so I decided to post them for fun. Mule deer potential

One would think that having the right genetic pool is key with horn growth, much like humans with how tall we get. If the average human is 6 feet tall and equates to 165" mule deer horns, and the percentage of 6'6" humans equals say 180", then 7 foot humans might equate to 240"ers? That said, if...

You hunting Turkey's this year? (Poll)

Most of us only get spring bear tags once in a while. No salmon to fish for, and picking up forkie horns just doesn't cut it. SS!, if they lived in your neck of the woods, I'm sure you'd make room to squeeze turkeys into your Spring agenda.

You hunting Turkey's this year? (Poll)

Anyone who enjoys hunting rutting elk oughta give turkey hunting a go. It's just fun if you get them talking and then calling one in is a rush. The end product is just a bird, but the action is pretty cool. I don't buy a general tag in Utah because by that season they aren't talking much, but...
