How is the mule deer season going?

Whats your mule deer hunts been like this year, and in what area? Weather been mostly warm lately i believe. Sure was windy and nasty for a few days though, and a little snow. Any nice buck pics?

    6.8 Western

Should find ammo for the 6.8 now. But, once the current pile is gone it may not see manufacture again for a long time, or by many at all. Extremely tough to get reloading components for too. I doubt that will get better. Shame, it is very interesting cartridge design.

Trying out new bullets this year

SST bullets get an awful bad wrap from some people. I have used them for deer for years and have nothing to complain about. They almost always go straight down. Not a performer past 400yrds. though.

Too many great rifles out there for less. I personally would build one at that price from a good off the shelf doner rifle. But that does take time.

    Wyoming Deer Question

I made the mistake of thinking the deer and elk stayed high till weather pushed them out to search for food lower. Mostly because that is what I was told. WRONG.... Many mule deer will be just about any place they feel safe and have food to keep them happy. Some won't travel very far...

You can, as a nonresident, go into wilderness areas and do everything but harvest a big game animal. You can hike ,scout ,camp, hunt small game and coyotes. Just no big game...... .

    220 Swift Issue/ Question

Douglass barrels aren't as talked about, but they do make and have installed barrels for some of the best shooters in the country for years. I believe their prices cannot be beaten. Maybe ask a local Smith about a cut and rechamber job to compare prices.

    220 Swift Issue/ Question

A new barrel should run around 4-600 bucks installed and in either stainless or blued. That is the lower end of the scale, but shop around. Call the guys in West Virginia for the best price possible and quality work in my opinion.

    Road conditions question

Back only works most of the time. Some vehicles don't have much clearance up front with brake lines or fender wells while turning. Sometimes ,if it's bad, all four chained up will save the day.

    Road conditions question

The soil in many areas of Wyoming is very fine and almost like powder. I have been on beautiful dirt roads that turned into snot with a light shower of rain or snow melt. Bring chains and keep them handy.

    Busted Bolt Handle

Don't feel too bad. I have broken two Remington bolts myself . No, I didn't use a hammer. Stuck hot load and a desperate, determined yank . I welded them back on myself.

    Breech plug cleaning

I have used the torch tip cleaners too. But that was only after some serious crude needed to be cleaned out of the nipple and flash hole.

    Breech plug cleaning

I chuck a shotgun bore brush in a drill. It clears the internal crude out great with hot water and some simple green degreaser.

    22-250 For Deer

As all have already commented,,,,,, It will work, just not ideal choice. I have taken tons of kids out for their first deer. Many had .223 but by far most handled a .243 well and it does a great job of getting it done. I can highly recommend getting any younger hunter a .243 that you can buy as...

The high ballistic coefficient bullets have definitely been a bit of an area for debate. Heavy bullets going faster doesn't equal magic. But I certainly can't claim to understand all the data and results I see for myself. Much less what some claim. So I understand the disbelievers. Many...

I am eager to put it to the test on game. The 156gr seams to really hold energy well out to 500yrds. Should be a fantastic deer cartridge for sure. I believe plenty of elk will be taken cleanly too. As long as people realize there limitations and the cartridges limitations. Should be fine on elk...

Only thing I don't like about my Howa, is the light barrel contour. It gets very hot after 6-7 shots. But the first three shots out of a cold bore group fantastic. I guess that isn't something to complain about.

Good to see some good people still post on this forum. Hoping you and your family all the best. I gave some brass to a guy I overheard trying to find stuff for his grandson, a while back. That's how I think it's supposed to work.

    Bolt wont pull back

I would have a finishing reamer hand turned in it by a smith. Bet it won't be an ammo issue. It only takes a couple thousandths to be way too tight.
