    Mid-October Elk Calling

Just got back from an Archery hunt in one of New Mexico's better-known units, and the bulls weren't really bugling much yet. They certainly weren't fired up enough to come to calls. It's a weird year, so I'd say it's possible that some areas will be catching the tail end of the rut in mid...

    Big Wyoming Muley

I was holding my breath too. I swore that smaller buck was going to bust him. What an awesome video, and good for the hunter who put in all the time and work and had it pay off.

NM unit 30 late youth season

There are deer throughout the unit. Like mentioned above, it's not a high country unit, so there are no migrations or weather that will move the deer down to a concentrated area the way it does in some other areas/states. It's desert mountains, and the deer can be anywhere- from the cactus flats...

    KUIU Peloton 200 v 97

I'm not sure there's enough difference in warmth between the 97 and 200 to justify buying the 200. they're both lightweight, relatively low nap fleeces, but none are thick/lofty enough to truly be a valid insulator when it really gets cold. Wearing a 97, 200 and a 240 over the top seems pretty...

    Worst Creep Stories From Today???

I've had this happen before as well. Put in with 3 points and didn't draw. People with 2 points were awarded tags. Makes me think that the preference points are very helpful, but not a guarantee. DOW said that it was possible that this happens based on their system, but the explanation made my...

    Leupold VX-5HD Custom Turret

I recently ordered my custom dial for a vx-5 3-15x44. I went with a 250 yd. zero on my .270 wsm, which puts me 1.9" high at a hundred, 2.1 high at 200, 0.0 at 250, and -2.6 at 300. Did it this way because if it's inside 325, I won't have to mess with the turret. If something is standing farther...

    Western cold weather camo.

I think pattern matters much less than the shades of color. Anything brown, gray, light green will blend well. Dark colors, and even detailed camo patterns with dark base colors will make your silhouette stand out against the open terrain at any kind of distance. If it's for cold weather, you'll...

    First time Muley hunter Questions

I've never hunted Idaho, but I'll be as helpful in a general sense as I can. If it were me, I'd base when I hunted them this way: If I want to backpack in somewhere and hunt the backcountry, I'd go as early as I can. If I'm car camping, I'd go later and let the "opening day rush" wear off...

    11/211 3rd season deer

Those units aren't real high or rugged, so there are a lot of roads through a lot of that country. The deer seem to be used to it, and will find little wrinkles in what looks fairly flat country and hide out in it. It's not necessarily far from roads, but there's a lot of country you can't see...

    New Mexico Unit 30

Hi Peter- It's been a decade or so since I've hunted it, but I'll give you a general overview of the area. There are deer throughout 30- from highway 285 all the way to the Brokeoffs. The terrain varies from mesquite draws on the valley floors to steep, rock covered canyons up in the...

    SHOULD SHE BE HUNTING???JUDAS!!!

Slightly off topic, but is all hunting in Africa like this? Basically driving around until you see your quarry grazing calmly at 200 yards, and then picking the one you want? I mean, the antelope (whatever they were) just grazed at 40 yards while they drove by. I guess they weren't on the menu...

    Durango-Pagosa Springs elk

I was in the area third season. Elk seemed to be in very concentrated pockets. I'm pretty unfamiliar with the area, but it seemed like the elk had moved below 9500 feet. We started between 10 and 11k, and didn't see any elk activity at all. I have to believe the bears are part of the problem. We...

    Youth Application

I was struggling to figure it out too. Mine luckily has a passport, so we were able to use that as a form of ID and get him applied. Question for you guys- are the youth tags drawn out of a separate pool of tags, or is it all the same pool, and the youth tag would require the same number of...

    Son's Hard-Earned Deer

It's been a while since I've posted, but wanted to share my youngest son's deer and story. We had a pretty slow start to our hunt. It was warm? near 70 all week, and the deer weren't moving much at all. On the last evening, while sitting in a shady spot, trying to get out of the sun, we wised...

    Youth Deer Unit 17

Hi SWB- Glad to hear you get to get out and spend some time with your daughter over Thanksgiving. My oldest son had that hunt about 5 years ago, and here's what I learned: The deer seemed to be in the middle elevations- the cedar country and even lower canyons. We only saw young bucks, but...

    Insole advice for new Meindls

I have a couple pair of Meindls as well. I really like the Earthkeeper insoles they sell at Cabela's. Not sure what model they are, but they're the burnt orange colored ones. In case this helps, my arches are weak and relatively low, and these help keep my feet from aching.

    Vortex Optics Opinions Please!

Hi there- I'm in the marketing advertising field, so I'll respond, just to help you out. I looked at the viper, the nikon monarch 7, the cabbala's euros, and the...

    How old is old enough?

Love the kid in the pack pic! I totally agree with what's been said. With all the time spent with organized sports, electronics, homework, etc...I take my kids any time they say they want to go. Sure, I don't end up hunting quite as hard, or late, or long, but I wouldn't change it. I had my...

    Unit 45 Youth Deer Hunt

Thanks for the update, 12. And congrats on the buck. I hear they got snow up there last weekend, so maybe that will concentrate them a little lower. Unit 45 Youth Deer Hunt

Hey guys- we're headed up to the Pecos area for the Thanksgiving youth hunt. My older son had the tag a couple years ago and we had a great time. Redhead 1856 Windproof Fleece Jacket

I've been looking for a jacket that will cover 80% of my time in the field for quite a while, and I think I've finally found it. Here's the criteria I was looking for: Lightweight, yet warm. Windproof and breathable Quiet generously cut to allow an extra layer when needed The jacket is cut...

    Optifade Camo, does it work?

Under my blaze orange vest, optifade works best. Just kidding. As others have stated, anything that's got a predominantly lighter background works best for western hunting in my opinion. The idea is to blend with lots of environments, not match one specific one. I too like outfitter camo-...

unit 30 1st vs. second hunt?

Kind of what I thought. Thanks for the response, Paul. I take a little solace in thinking that maybe those giant rattlesnakes down there might be more apt to be denned up by the second hunt. I think some of those things must be cross-bred with pythons. Appreciate the feedback. WH
