Lets hear your thoughts on outfitters

I have a friend who guides fishing in Utah. He has to apply for permits from the forest service (federal government) yearly to be able to do so legally. He is not guaranteed this permit, but has to fill out he appropriate paperwork each year. Do guides for big game have to do the same? If so...

Do you hunt for more than meat or trophy?

I haven't bought beef, besides a brisket to smoke, for 18 years. During that time my family has lived on elk, deer, antelope, moose, turkey and bison. My kids complain about eating dinner anywhere else because the meat tastes funny. It is true that it is expensive, but the time with family and...

    Utah Tag Numbers??

A 40% harvest would be 760 bucks, still a lot, but not over 50% of the estimated population.

    OIL hunt tips

Do it your way and don't stress yourself out. Take your lifelong hunting buddies along with you. They understand you and what works when hunting. Don't let anyone else set expectations for what you should harvest. Forget the score and shoot the one that makes your heart skip a beat. As far as...

Tooth data age results elk 2022

My wife shot an antelope on the Parker Mountain in 2009, the tooth data came back that it was 7 years old, it still had its baby teeth. She shot a yearling. I know it is done by an outside entity, but I don't believe that it is 100% accurate.

Tooth data age results elk 2022

I have a hard time believing some of the tooth data that people get sent back. It doesn't seem to fit sometimes. That data is used to judge age objectives that the DWR has set. I'd be curious to see results from the DWR as well as an independent company.

Poll: Utah NR applications. Read post before voting

Sadly I see your point, but you need to realize that people who are residents and are just starting to build points have worse odds than anyone. I finally drew my limited entry elk tag last year with 25 points going into the draw. I could have drawn other units earlier, but wanted to hunt a...

    2023 Elk options

If I were you I'd draw the tag one at a time. There are a lot of elk on the unit, but sifting though and finding 2 bulls you are wanting to shoot could be a bit of a challenge. Besides, that way you get to hunt the unit 2 years.

26 years and 28 minutes (sorry this is a long one)

I have debated on posting this for several months now, but here it goes. I had dreamt of hunting a limited entry hunt as long as I can remember. Elk have always been majestic, tough, and beautiful animals. My dad took us elk hunting at a young age and the magic has never left. After 25 years...

    Let's see your elk mounts

I am looking for ideas on taxidermy for an elk. I'm curious what you all have. If you don't mind post a picture. I am leaning towards a pedestal or a shoulder mount for the wall.

I finally drew this tag and was interested in seeing bulls harvested on the unit. If you have hunted it let me know how your experience was. I realize its a tough unit, but I am ready for the work and experience.

    Chimney Rock CWMU Moose

I have talked to the operator and he gave me some information. I have also called the biologist over the unit and he has never been on it yet. He has only been in Utah for 1 month so far. The operator won't allow you to cut before the hunt.

    Chimney Rock CWMU Moose

My son was lucky enough to draw the Moose permit on Chimney Rock. It is east of the Henefer WMA. Has anyone spent any time up there? I am wondering about moose population in the area, not necessarily on the unit. There was one permit last year and the hunter was able to harvest a 3 1/2 year old...

    Shiras Moose

LAST EDITED ON May-30-17 AT 03:32PM (MST)[p]My son was lucky enough to draw a moose tag for this fall. I admit that I am pretty much clueless as to moose hunting. I am curious what grain bullet you would recommend shooting. I currently have a 7mm that I shoot Hornady ELD-X 162 grain custom...
