270 win 130 grain recommendation for elk

I have never bothered buying expensive bullets. 130 gr and 150 gr Winchester Extreme Points and Power Points are accurate out of my .270 and have always done the trick downing elk. Accuracy and practice trumps the price of the ammo, in my opinion.

    Daughters and Hunting

Love the comments and pics. I have three daughters and they all love the outdoors. When it comes to hunting, I recommend trying to time their first hunting outing with a high success hunt. I was fortunate to take my oldest hunting when the Beaver unit was good (deer muzzy). I shot my buck...

    Help judging

I'm by no means an expert, but these guys are guessing where I would as well. The bull has decent eye guards, 2nds, and 3rds, but lacks overall main beam length and has weaker tops (4th, 5th and 6th points). He looks to be about done growing as well.

    Beaver Archery Deer

You can read several Beaver posts that have been on this site over the past 3 years. The main theme is Beaver has gone downhill in a major way. Still plenty of elk, but the deer numbers are way down. I have great memories hunting Beaver with bow and muzzy, but I'm not going back for several...

Beautiful first buck for sure, regardless of score. She did great!

    New to CA

Any decent waterfowl hunting in southern Cal? I love duck hunting, but I usually go to northern UT with family. I would love to learn a few places here in CA, though.

Wow, how many days/hours does that pile represent?!?!

    New to CA

Agreed! No matter how bad the hunting may be, I will always make it out there to try! Never shot a bear before, but sounds like I need to give that a shot.

    New to CA

In the process of moving here from Vegas. At the time many are fleeing the state, I feel like I am swimming up-stream! From the research I have done, it sounds like I should keep putting in for tags in NV and UT?!?! Not many tags in CA and longer draw odds, with less big bucks and bulls. I...

    Rangefinder Ban.....It's time

I've said it before and I'll say it again....less rifle tags and more archery and muzzy tags. All the tech ban proposals will be a nightmare to enforce if put into place.

    Hunting Rifles

.270 Winchester Model 70 with a Nikon BDR scope on it. Kills both elk and deer. Flat shooting gun and I have built a lot of confidence with it.

Very cool animals. I remember seeing several when I lived in AK. I wonder how many more there are in UT...

Ditto for me. I love sticker points, cheaters, and extras!!

    Tag cuts

Tag cuts are tough for outdoorsmen, but necessary for the deer situation in UT. I don't think they cut them enough. Glad to see that they increased the bison permits though...

What size cooler would hold a quartered out Mule Deer?

I like to quarter my deer to pack them out then bone them out at the truck before the cooler. Much more compact that way. Doesn't take long either.

All these attempted, potential changes to lifetime hunters' annual privileges will only make some attorneys rich in the process (regardless of outcomes).

    POLL: Archery Hunting or Nothing???

As I stated earlier in the trail camera ban thread - Decrease rifle tags and increase BOTH muzzy and archery tags. I would be highly in favor. It would help the terribly mismanaged deer herds in UT without the DWR crying about lost revenues (if they were to cut tags altogether).

Which buck would you be hunting?

Drop tines are on different antlers. If the photos are taken in the same year, these are different bucks.
  27. G

    Kill the Trail Cam Bill

Less rifle tags and more archery and muzzy tags. Same number of tags, so DWR still gets its money with lower success ratio. Herds have a chance to recover. Leave technology alone. Problem solved, no?
  28. G

    Kill the Trail Cam Bill

Wouldn't cutting tags do more for the herd than banning trail cameras? I know this is another endless debate topic, but I think they are overlooking the bigger issue on this one.
  29. G

    Kill the Trail Cam Bill

Lots of good debating points here, but I just keep coming back to the fact that UT has a deer herd management crisis. Why not focus more effort on improving the herd instead of banning trail cameras??? Seems like these guys have their priorities mixed up...

    northern utah elk tips

A lot can be learned with scouting and seeing what passes by on a trail cam. Keep in mind that elk will be in certain areas certain times of the year. Hunting pressure will also impact where they hang out and where they retreat to.

Sad planning for your last hunt

I often wonder how many old-timers will drop out of the draw with their high point tallies in the coming 5-8 years...maybe some hope to finally draw something. That's about all the bright side I can find, besides dumb luck.
