How heavy was too heavy? I am looking at about 490 grains.

Lots of options. Do you want a horse back hunt, lodge hunt on private land, wall tent in the back country. Good for you starting to research now.

Look for an outfitter with great private land and go archery hunt and hear 100s of bugles in a week and chase them. That sounds like an adventure too me.

Wyoming doesn't have general season antelope so that rules us out.

Most of my hunting during archery season is getting to a parking spot at 10pm and only hunting mornings before I have to be back to town by 3pm. Too much work setting up a tent for nights like that. Luckily I hunt solo mostly and God blessed me with a lovely 5'8" body that has 2" to spare...

Second choice doesn't use your points. Sometimes you can draw type 4 second choice.

You are paying for access to horses, trailers, and the guides prior experiences that know the layout of the land. The NW corner mtns are HUGE mountains and without horses and mules AND knowledge and no access to the wilderness area you won't come close to killing a giant bull from Park County...

Archery elk was an absolute failure. Equipment failure on a big bull at 25 yards. My own dumb fault for not double checking my Equipment. I had 11 bulls in archery range during season but screwed up on the big one. Massive success for my boys first big game hunting season. First mule deer...

I own both. The PRC is a killer. 475 yards on a deer and 375 on a cow elk. Both killed by my 12 year old son. Gun has a brake and he shoots it no problem. Eldm bullets.

I added a brake to my tikka 300wm. Very comfortable to shoot now.

As my kids get older my focus is obviously changing to them. My oldest boy shows little emotion and must have ice in his veins. He was calm the whole time. 375 yard shot with "his" 6.5 prc 147 eldm and put his first elk down. He is now bragging that "I got it done and dad didn't" Next...

Do you archery hunt? Some good type 9 tags and be in buglibg bulls with no pressure to shoot a big one. Sounds like a great time to me.

Guided or unguided? Lots of questions could nudge you in a ton of different directions. Wait for the "I will share points with you" crowd to show up. Elk are really the only species doing ok in Wyoming right now. Good luck.

My 12 year old boy weighs about 70 lbs. He practiced all summer with a 6.5 creed. Then I put a 6.5 prc in his hands and he smacked a deer at 475 yards no problem. It has a brake and is very comfortable to shoot. I would trust it on elk too.
