They also really cut the tag numbers down on Kaibab archery. I was drawing every other year as a non resident with a hunter safety and loyalty point. I just took it for granted. If im lucky I will draw one more time.

First hard freeze on top they move. Usually during the time frame of your hunt dates. If you find one off the top they will be around for your hunt.

I drew random with.2 points. 4th time same hunt since the late 90s. Its archery , so a test on old joints.

It also takes age . There will be a handful of great bucks on the Pauns. The professional's are aware of almost all of them. They will probably be gone before the rifle hunt.

I thought both units were managed by age classification. They haven't changed permit numbers on the Pauns for decades. Population numbers reflect drought and fawn production. I guess those numbers dont trigger permit changes. Maybe should.

I suspect a lot of bp only buyers were waiting for late start date. Add the weather and it was all in on the hunt that you were waiting on.

I think being able to draw 1st or 2nd choice in the first round makes it hard to figure. It can look like a higher bp holder got passed and a lower number drew in the BP round. The higher point holder likely drew a different unit. I think I got close on max points needed last year on some...

I agree with WapitiBob you have the right order in choices. Not to be a downer but I think you will just be in the Random draw with those 2 choices. A lot of high point holders bought their hunter ed point this year . Also, alot of high point holders who have been buying bonus points will apply...

Costners been making a movie in the Kanab area the past few weeks, titled Horizon . A western set pre and post civil war era. Really liked him in Silverado and Open Range.

Pick a trail off the whites or the reds and hunt the country under it. Wet sand ( we hope) is a big help !

The Texas cabin is now part of the BF animal sanctuary, in Kanab canyon( we called it Robinson's canyon back then). The abandoned town and saloon is the out to the Paria movie set / townsite east of Kanab.

Sounds like were both of a certain age. Ive been running around 9 since the 80s. Its a unit I could still hunt , country club elk hunting.

Niece hunted the sept rifle hunt in 2020 on a permit somebody turned back. She killed a 5 year old 320 class 6 point. Surprised me . I would say hunt up on the plateau and enjoy the scenery or hunt lower and try catching one off the private. The elk on the Pauns act more like general season...

IMO, odds will be a little worse in 23. People at upper point levels who have been waiting for late dates will apply to draw in 2023 .

That's the most online info for that unit I have seen and I have been looking for a few years. Not sure if it's a good thing but its helpful.
