    Fishing for info

I've recently relocated to the Sonora area. Have lived in X Zone country for last 30 years, hunted X6 A archery since 1972. But killed many D6 bucks in 70s/80s. So I've heard about "edge of Yosemite" bucks. I hike 3-4 days a week so even at my age, I think I can still do this type of hunt...

    Getting antsy

LAST EDITED ON May-15-17 AT 10:05PM (MST)[p]4K, I suggest you apply yourself and your son in multiple states. Nevada would cost you $400.00 for the 2 of you build points for deer, elk, antelope, and both species of sheep. Utah for $200.00 total you can both build points for deer, elk...

Joey always had style (note the hat). And a way of pissing off a few on here who are ultra sensitive. Our Kali Bessy/Elk assasian character. I miss him.

    Specks and Hunting???

LASIK surgery gave me outstanding distance vision 12 years ago, but made me need reading glasses. Sucks when you can read a gps so I have to carry reading glasses now. But the surgery was great for hunting, sports, etc.

    Good Deeds

I was on the Sacto refuge with my Dad 40+ years ago. Foggy, we'd shot several geese near the closed zone. As we were driving out I saw a guy walking down the levee with a duck strap across his shoulder. Hanging off his back were a couple of snows and at least one speck. Hanging across his front...

    My good worries

I apply wife and I for 6 species (including gen deer) in Utah, 5 species in Nv, deer/elk in Co, deer/elk/antelope in Wy. I apply myself for deer/elk/antelope in Az, and sometimes ID and NM. We still have 50+ PPs in Ore. Plus Kali, everything, both of us. I rarely worry about duplicate tags...

    14 bp ?

I spend 20-30 days in 5B every year, 2nd week of Oct, through Jan. There are good bucks there but finding them in Oct is tough. Buck I see in late Nov through end of Jan are VERY hard to find during the season.

    Deer Unit 141-145

I'm sure you will (chukar). Hunted it in "95" missed 2 of the biggest bucks I ever shot at, one way over 30". Hunted it with buddies tag about 10-11 years ago. Bucks weren't in previous spot. One day we hiked to top of Diamond. He missed opportunity at heavy, deep forked 26" 4x4. Then he...

.270 win non lead ammo questions

I've had the same experience with the Barnes bullets, very accurate initially but if you don't clean regularly accuracy falls off quickly. Same for 7mm-08, 280 and 338. Great results on elk, have used a more fragile bullet for deer/antelope. Guess it'll be Barnes in Kali in the future.

If I had 3 NR PPs, I wouldn't plan on drawing either tag but maybe you're luckier than me.

Got Drawn for my first New Mexico deer hunt

I've hunted it for 2Xs since 2010 for elk but wouldn't know where to start for deer. Huge, remote country so I believe there is potential for a pig, just don't know where I would start, sorry.

    NR antelope

Back when you had to pick one species, antelope was easy. Now, not so much. Fortunately my wife had an antelope point before the change 8 years ago.

    Northeast CA winter

Like NE said. The snow didn't stay on the valley floor long like it did in 92/93. I was chukar hunting during the worst of it ( late Jan) and some of the south facing slopes were burning off too. Only issue would be predation.

    Side by side question

I don't have PS in my Ranger and a few times, in real rocky stuff I thought, "I wonder how PS would work right now?" But got through it without PS with no issues. And you know the rocky country I hunt. Over 5 mph, not an issue without it.

    Left handed youth rifles

Bought my wife a stainless Savage in 7mm-08. Think it's a model 116 without opening the safe. Comes with the accu-trigger. My 2 accu-triggers are the 2 best triggers I own. She shoots 139 gr Hornady SSTs on deer/antelope, and 140 gr Barnes for elk. Both bulls she shot died within 10 feet...

    015 Late Deer 12/21 - 1/1/17

I know a lot of locals quit applying for 015 in the last 5 years. Best bucks I've seen in that time period were 3-5 miles on Kali side BUT a buddy saw 2 separate pigs early, while scouting for antelope 3years ago. Need a tag, then some luck.

Any NR apply for West Des. River bend?

I just re-read the other post, applied for another unit. 9 PPs is one more than the majority have since she had 1 before they began allowing you to apply for everything.

    Which Utah deer area?

The hardest to draw general deer tags take 3+/- points to draw for NR. Some take 0. I personally have 6, as does the wife. Hope to hunt the same unit back to back years soon, once alone, then with her. For LE deer, points are everything. If you're gonna buy the license every other year to...

    Unit 27 plane ride

I did it 93, right after a terrible winter kill. Scores of deer carcasses in bottom of canyons. Bears were very fat. Good numbers of elk. We spiked 4-6 miles from airstrip, floated in rented raft, hunted other canyons between airstrips and flew out of another airstrip. Great experience. We...

Any NR apply for West Des. River bend?

Antelope. Wife had enough points to draw last year but it only takes 1 to knock her outta the bonus point tag so we'll see. Getting excited. Just got a good, warm feeling she'll get a tag this year. Maybe I'm way off base, could be the Henry's she'll draw but this lope tag is her best shot.

    Injuried Dog

THE REST OF THE STORY. I was able to hunt him during the 2015-2016 chukar season. He was good for 3 hours. Poor hatch but we got our birds. He fathered a litter spring of 2016. By summer he was dragging his right rear. By fall he was numb in his hindquarters. He was incontinent, crapping in...

    Chuckar

Use a fast steel load (1500+) and you'll be fine. I used 1 1/16 oz #4s(2 3/4") 1550 fps for first shot, then 1 1/8 oz #4s (3") @ 1550 fps for 2nd & 3rd shot. I was surprised how well they performed out to 45 yards. Lots of stone dead birds, probably from tighter pattern of lead.

    M8 Bass Hill muzzleloader tips?

Hunt Bass Hill if you don't have private access. Saw a couple of nice bucks while quail hunting Saturday. Son and I saw 250+ quail Sat, I got into another 175 Sun, but no bucks. But watching dogs point isn't conducive to seeing big mule deer bucks moving out 500 yards in front of you.
