    Remington 700ml time to upgrade?

Don, In factory original state your gun is a ways behind the current technology for muzzleloading. You can have your 700ML built to handle loads that are in excess of the current 700 Ultimate ML for sure. I have a few of them myself. I limit 400 yards on bull elk shooting BH209 with my old...

    Are Core Loks really junk?!

There is a reason they used to advertise as the deadliest mushroom in the woods. They work. Here is a 180 gr CL that was in a 300 Wby Magnum that took out a oryx from under 200 yards. Oryx and their hides are tougher than any elk. This bullet did the job and was recovered under the hide on...

    tough meat solution

Try a sous vide (SV) cooker. You can set the temp do your desired doneness (125? for MR, 140? for M) and cook the steaks for 4 hours. It will not be overcooked as it is held at the perfect temperature but the tissue slowly breaks down. I have cooked beef short ribs for up to 72 hours. season...

Work Sharp knife and tool sharpener

The Ken Onion knife grinder is outstanding upgrade. It is repeatable and when used correctly, is fast and efficient. Work Sharp is releasing a new sharpening tool this month. Stay tuned for a review.

Work Sharp knife and tool sharpener

The Work Sharp is a very good tool. I have a multitude of sharpening systems including Edge Pro Apex, Wicked Sharp, Lansky, Chef's Choice, and some others. I can get a razor edge with most of them but the Work Sharp is much faster than the others. Most people over sharpen their knives. No...

    Muzzleloader set-up question

It sounds like your scope may mounted with the reticle canted clockwise. Or you have a bit more left to right wind than you think. I am betting on the first.

    Muzzy load and Turret scope

Did you draw a NM tag? Congrats if you did. I did not. :( Anyhoo you should be fine for accuracy at 300 yards with some BH209 (85.0gr by weight) and a 300 gr SST/Shockwave in a Harvester sabot. The problem comes with energy, or the lack there of. I would limit that combo to 250 yards for...

    Unit 28 Barbary

Anyone go on this hunt recently? My buddy drew a military only tag then asked me to take him hunting. Not a clue where to start. I have a map of 28 from a oryx hunt a few years ago, so I guess I will just start covering ground.

    New Zealand Gun Confiscation

Grizzly, Your caveat of "20 years" is the only thing making your statement true. Go back a bit farther and it is far from the truth. Clinton's Brady Bill put a 10 year hiatus on "assault guns" and magazines over 10 rounds. Libtards suck.

Lujan Griffin says they gotta go

She is only doing the bidding of those that put her in office. It is not just the sheep of NM to blame, most of them are not smart enough to realize what is going on in the grand scheme of things. She has to push the agenda that is the cancer of the USA.

    Salmon Bellies

LAST EDITED ON Mar-24-19 AT 09:41AM (MST)[p]I have done salmon various ways and this is my favorite: Mad Hunky Dry Salmon Brine & Cure. The dry brine has great flavor that accents the fish flavor without over powering the fish. I add the dry brine then vacuum bag the fish and in the fridge for...

    GPS Navigation

Don't just rely on a GPS unit. Always have a backup. I have a Garmin 61 that I have used very successfully for many years. This year it took me on a hike no where near the location I wanted to go. I shut it off and restarted it and it still had a bad location. I walked a few extra miles but...

New and getting to muzzle loading hunting, doing some research, had a quick question about Virginia law if anyone can help!

RE: New and getting to muzzle loading hunting, doing some research, had a quick question about Virginia law if anyone can help! Barrels are measured by the largest diameter (groove diameter). A .44 caliber would not have a .451 diameter bore. A .44 caliber will have a .422" land diameter with...

    New E tag process

I agree. When I initially read it I was up for it but now I have to carry my phone, fill out an app, and use a home made tag on the critter. No thanks. They can mail me a tag.

Could or Should I Leave A Load in my CVA Accura V2?

Yes, I have left a TEC Omega loaded (no primer) for 1.5 years with no issues due to a broken arm injury. I went to the range 1.5 years later and the gun shot just fine and put the bullet in a 1.5 MOA group with 4 freshly loaded rounds. I did not have any rust in the barrel either but my gun...

    Ultimate Breech Plug damage

The factory Encore breechplug shoots BH209 just fine. I have shot many pounds of BH209 in my Encore and Omega with no issues when using the correct primer and a tight fitting sabot of course.

Would Any One Care to Comment About the TC Shock Wave M.L. Sabots?

The TC Shockwave is the same as the Hornady SST. They expand just fine at ML velocities. When shot from smokeless they act like varmint bullets but they shoot just fine with 100-150 gr loads. I shot my 5x5 bull with these bullets in 300 gr weight and 120 gr by volume of BH209. I can also get...

    New Rem ML700?

Check out the Fury 325 gr star tips. They are very accurate when sized to fit your bore. I also recommend getting a new breechplug from Arrowhead Sporting Goods. It will give the best and most consistent performance.

    Bases For Long Action?

I believe you will find short action 2-piece bases for the 10/12/14/16 will also work. I went the other way and installed a picatinny rails on my long action guns. Much better alignment than the 2-piece.

    Ultimate Breech Plug damage

It has nothing to do with BH209, it is a poorly designed breechplug. I will second Luke's conversion. It is a much better design.

    DreamSabots Suggestions

Not sure, I have no desire to shoot a soft lead bullet at slingshot velocities. A high BC jacketed bullet on the other hand is a different story.

    Remington Ultimate

LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-18 AT 09:26PM (MST)[p]I upgraded my 700 UML breechplug to use different modules and headspaced it correctly to use BH209 with no issues. I shot some test loads to get velocity and pressure readings. Here is what I got: BH209 loads by weight not volume. 310 gr APB...

Sufficient energy to drop an elk

A .50 cal SWC bullet weighing 460 gr will have a BC of about .200 at 1375 fps @ muzzle you are down to 850 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards. Just over 1000 at 200 yards. Even a very generous BC of .220 is under 900 ft-lbs at 300 yards.

    209 powder scale

Electronic scales suck. They are not repeatable measuring to .1 grains. They are susceptible to fluorescent lights interfering with them and you need to add powder quickly to get the readings to increase correctly. A cheap balance beam is much better than any electronic scale for powder...

    BH209

84.0 gr by weight is equal to 118.4 gr by volume. You can use 1.0 gr by volume = 0.71 gr by weight with BH209.

    Cva ramrod field loading?

  38. H

    BH209

Yep, that is why I always premeasure my loads by weight. Using 0.7 gr by weight to 1.0 gr by volume is what Western Powder also recommends. Some say it does not make a difference, but nobody at Friendship loads by volume, well nobody that wins loads by volume.
  39. H

    45 vs 50

Yep, you got it. I'd love to build a new modern inline that is smokeless capable in .40 caliber but since I can't use it to hunt, I will not waste the money. There are some very impressive new bullets out for the .40 caliber now.

Would you go to see all those mule deer mounts?

Nope, it will take a lot more than that for me to go to ABQ.
