    New member!

Welcome to the forum Chickencoop96, my experience is there's lots of good info found on this site from friendly fellow members! I live in C-Springs right now, getting a deer tag requires being drawn for a GMU there are no OTC tags for deer in CO,. The preference point systems isn't that hard...

    Colorado 2nd season mule deer

Kevin, try researching GMUs 54/55 right outside of Gunnison. I hunted elk in there and saw mule deer that will meet your expectations. I haven't looked at the statistics yet (recco you check for yourself before applying) but 5 Non-Residents points could put you in either for deer. Last winter...

6.5 creedmore vs 6.5 PRC for Mule deer

I bought a 6.5 CM over the PRC when I was shopping for my 6.5 caliber. The availability, expense, and recoil of the PRC ammo (reloaded or factory) isn't worth it to me and I reload all my rifle ammo. My personal limit is to not shoot past 400 yards at game, and that is a long way. We're...

    300 Win Mag Loads ?

For my 300 Win Mag w/26" barrel, I reload - 69grs H4831, CCI large rifle primer, topped off with 180gr Horn Interlock. This load isn't blazing fast but performance - dropped my 2022 bull elk at 440yrds right there.

    Rifle actions

Ruger M77, Hawkeye, 25-06, or Christensen Arms, Mesa in 6.5 Creed, get my vote. Anyone can shoot either comfortably and either is appropriate for deer/pronghorn/black bear/coyotes.

    Brown bear caliber

.338 Win Mag, with 250gr. Nos. Partition. Decent trajectory (don't take long shots at Brownies) will hit hard, hold together and penetrate deep. I have it in a stainless Ruger M77 Mk II, Sightron SII scope, bought in 2003.

Wolf Proposal to introduce in Carbondale Area!!!

Anyone who's lived here for 10-15 years can confirm - CO is already seeing declines/changes in big game populations in several GMUs. From what I've read, this is due to everything from the several year drought experienced in Western states to the increases in hunting tags by the CPW. I'm no...

    Foot stalking gear.

I use a pair of the felt inserts for those winter pack boots. I prefer to wear two pairs of socks inside them. They work great (quiet), are cheap to replace, and provide a little bit of protection from short thorns. 2f350s: Hunt hard, hunt ethically.

    arrow fletching

Hi, Your post doesn't specify - but feathers are a must on arrows in recurves (rubbery vanes don't pass over the shelf or over a rest very smooth and porpoise in flight. If you're shooting a compound you can use either, just waterproof the feathers in case of inclement weather. 2f350s: Hunt...

Thoughts on Recurve Setup for Big Game

Hello Wytex, I'm actually shooting Recurves, both bows are older Shakespeares - but are in like new condition (my guess is hardly used by previous owner). Since my arrows are on the lighter side of what's acceptable I may try to add a brass insert to get the weight up a bit more as...

    OLDER BOW

No model or specs provided but if its set at 67#, its likely the 60 to70lbs range of adjustment. My 1998 Hoyt runs 60 to 70lbs, I cranked it all the way so its at 70lbs (probably weaken a bit with age but it still puts them where the sight pins are. Going recurve though- this year! 2f350s...

    what unit

If you 3 pref points you have a realistic chance to draw a tag in CO through the Ranching for Wildlife program. I've had friends do that same thing and they enjoyed it, were assisted by the ranch hands/management, and harvested their targeted game species. they can be found on the CPW web page...

    CPW approves shed season regs

Thanks for posting this update! I heard this was being discussed but did not realize a decision was made, thankfully without a license/fee. Have to agree, and hope, it remains "not a money making issue" for the state. 2f350s: Hunt hard, hunt ethically.

    LO tag / trespass fee

Agreed, GMU40 has great bulls, and you'll pay a primo price to hunt there too! Other GMUs have quality bull to but I'm only familiar with Northwestern CO A better place to try for LO tags is Meeker/Craig/Steamboat area private ranches along Hwy 40. There are quite a few ranches up there and...

    Sad story

Sorry to hear of your frustrating hunt; although it sounds like you did everything right. I'm trying recurve hunt(s) this year and plan to get close... within 25 yards, but not as close as you were able to sneak to. I guess there is such a thing as too-close. Hope you gat a chance at him...

    Here's my worthless opinion

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-18 AT 12:16PM (MST)[p]I'm super human and can run 35MPH for a mile in hiking boots. This Spring I think I'll start chasing bucks and bulls though the woods (but I'll wear eye protection so I don't run into a stick and lose an eye). Once I'm running along side of them I'll...

Thoughts on Recurve Setup for Big Game

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-18 AT 12:20PM (MST)[p]I am going to hunt big game in Colorado this year with either my 50# or 55# recurve and take the other as a back up bow. I have a 65# Hoyt compound and harvested 1/cow & 1/bull with it, but its lost its appeal due to its mechanical nature so I'm going...

    Unit 74 Above Timberline Success!!

That is a dandy deer, excellent shot at 670yrds andis no small feet at 11K altitude... Pardon me for asking, but what deer season is open in GMU 74 for rifle in September? 2f350s: Hunt hard, hunt ethically.

    Antique Bows

I like the vintage recurve bows too. Plan on refinishing two of the ones I have and plan to hunt with them in the future and bought the corrct spine arrows for each weight. Need to hone the instinctive shooting before trying to hunt ethically. 1974 Wambaw 55#, 1972 Sierra 45#, 1969 Tioga 40#...

    Run and Gun Calling

I do a lot of constant moving during archery season. I like to go at it slow though, and deliberately work thicker timber and aspen areas known to hold small bedded elk herds. When the occasional aggressive bull responds then the tough part is working into a good set-up position. All the rules...

    Rustic Ridge Switchback frame pack

I use this very pack frame and it works great! I've packed out 6 bull elk and 2 muleys using it and have had no problems what so ever. I put the meat into heavy cotton game bags and tie them on tightly with heavy cord. Once you get into the straps and adjust the frame to sit up on your hips...

    Shed Hunting Season/License Opinions

I recently read a post in the "General" forum about shed closures and seemed appropriate subject for this forum. Why should there be any season, license, or bag limit? I'll start with my opinion: I do not believe in shed hunting closures, seasons, or bag limits (which haven't been mentioned...

I've been using cameras for the past 5 years. A military buddy bought the first one for me as a departing gift when he left for another assignment. That one is a Simons brand and it takes the BEST pictures... then my wife bought me a second, a Moultrie to cover two places at the same time...

    Hornady GMX

The GMX is somewhat comparable... they're made of gilding metal where the Barnes are all copper, so GMX's are compatible with standard load recipes. Banres have separate loadings because of the higher pressures due to potential copper fouling. I've just reloaded a few of them (139 gr) in my...
