    First bird of 24

Been a little slow with mature birds. Have had multiple opportunities on Jake’s (bodes well for next years 2-year olds  ). 1st mature bird was taken in the rain….here’s #2, inch and a half spurs.

    Apprentice Hunts

Tehama in a second! Those are not Blacktail, ,they are mule/Bt hybrid. The deer in west part of Lassen Park winter in TWA. I’ve seen some great deer come out in youth hunts, as well as G1. G1 is super weather dependent, while in Nov, they are setting up shop to winter (and rutting). And yes...

    Turkeys Starting to Play

Well 2023 is a wrap. Wife finished out with her biggest bird of the year. 21.5 lbs, 10.5 “ beard, an awesome 1 1/2” spurs. Normally we’d head to WA to chase Merriam’s, but knee surgery will keep us low key for a month. Have fun this last week…..Tom’s are cruising solo around noon now...

    Turkeys Starting to Play

Well with a knee surgery looming, and so far a lack of getting another gobbler into bow range, I was feeling pressure mounting and chose to grab the gun while taking my wife out. Good call. Got these two to come in and allow us to get a double (something we’ve only done a few times). Hers had a...

    Turkeys Starting to Play

Wife didn’t let a rainy night dissuade her……told me to “put on the coffee” , so I took her out. Good call I’d say as she got this multi-bearded Tom Friday am.

    Turkeys Starting to Play

With this wet weather, and the flooding along the river a couple weeks back, turkeys have been a bit elusive, but hit up the foothills and they seemed pretty fired up with the nice weather this week. Are you folks seeing them a little behind this spring? Opening day the group I hunted was 6...

Your biggest buck while road hunting

A mile from camp in NF. Had headed back to camp early after day in snowstorm. 2-day storm had just broke ~20 minutes before coming across him. Saw his twin 3 years later 1 1/2 mile in from where I got this one…. for all of 3 seconds at 80 yds (not along NF road this time)……no shot opportunity...

License fee increase for nonresidents introduced in House

In my case, I have 9 elk pts, and applied for a unit that took 8 in special last year (couple more in regular), so in planning process last year, thought I was sitting pretty good. If a couple people with 10ish were thinking of hunting in next year or 2 (maybe going regular) chose to go this...

License fee increase for nonresidents introduced in House

The write up could be more clear on special vs regular, and those ....aren't those numbers the correct ones for the "on top of regular tag price" when you apply special? Elk $692 + the new $1258 = $1950. Antelope $326 + $874 = $1200 and Deer $374 + 826 = $1200. Have a feeling my plans on...

    Waterfowl Season

Couple miles southwest from Chico. I do think the Klamath water debacle helped…..which is unfortunate. Waterfowl historically use that for a stopping over point as you all know, and this year, with almost no water, I’d guess a ton just shot straight to Sac Valley. The water shortages...

    Waterfowl Season

We had a phenomenal year. Opener to New Years was off the hook. Slowed quite a bit during all the rain, just started picking up again last week in Jan. Dad and son-in-law (Veterans) should be in for some stellar hunts this weekend  I hope all you landowners are getting our veterans out...

NE CALI Elk Youth Hunt Success 6x7

Congratulations! Sounds like your son had a most memorable hunt. While it doesn’t always end in success of a harvest (and success isn’t necessary gauged by a harvest) , it’s so rewarding to practice, put in effort, and have a situation like this happen and with family present, makes it...

    CA Draws

I had 7. Drew last year with 6, but turned it in due to closures about couple weeks before season . As it turned out, the access to get the area I planned to hunt opened, but I’d already turned in tag….ggrrrrr (so I knew I’d draw it this year). Last year odds with 5 pts was ~ 40%, I’d guess it...

AGFD --2022-2023 fall, spring hunt recommendations

Thanks! I see on Mt. Lion/Bear how that works, but don’t see anything on ADFG for deer—likely because it is a new proposal correct? There is an OTC archery unit I typically hunt, but has low threshold, so not sure if it would be worth planning for this Dec…
