Changing My Tune on Western Wyoming Mule Deer

In three days we saw two small bucks, five does and two fawns. Some Utad hunter shot the bigger one the next morning, a 18" four point. It was as bad as a poor Utah hunt. Pathetic. It will take many years, if ever to repopulate the area we hunted. We were in good country where we would...

Ok, so now that we are 2 full weeks deep…

Deer numbers are so low in central Utah and western Wyoming this year that mule deer will soon be added to the endangered species list.

    San Juan/Elk Ridge deer

My daughter in law got a 30 incher with a muzzy while 7.5 months pregnant last year. Most of the best bucks on that unit got nailed by the bow hunters, but not quite all of them. We hunted up north the first day and saw one that was tempting, then went down south the second day and got her buck...

Pavant down the tube for deer

Opening weekend in Wyoming region G deer/elk hunt for a comparison with Pavant. Three days bow hunting, only my son had tags, me and my grandson just along for company. Elk: 5 bulls, four were 6 points and one large 5 point, shots at two good sized 6 points. Heard numerous other bulls bugle...

Pavant down the tube for deer

I haven't been back and won't be back to Pavant this year. Tomorrow I'm off to Wyoming Region G for a deer/elk archery hunt with my son and a grandson. I just hope things are not as bad up there as they were at Pavant was, but we do expect a below normal year. I won't have a tag, but my son...

Pavant down the tube for deer

The problem at Pavant, and probably many other areas in the state right now, is not just the buck to doe ratio, but the low overall number of deer, period. The numbers is so low that it would take a long long time to recover to any reasonable level even if they all survive. We know that will...

Pavant down the tube for deer

I called home and told my wife we could be coming home early. She said "you might as well stay until you get one, then you won't have to go back". I told her not to worry about that, we won't be coming back this year. I expected a poor hunt this year, but this was rediculous. If I had known...

Pavant down the tube for deer

I have just returned from an archery deer hunt on the Pavant. I have hunted the Pavant almost every one of the past 58 years, seen its ups and downs, but never seen it anywhere near as bad as this year. The deer herd is down to 25% of the deer numbers on previous bad years and maybe 10% of the...

    G

At 74 years old, I have witnessed several bad winter kill years. Deer are always scarce the following few years, but there are always a few big one around, if you can find them. I didn't waste my points on G this year. Probably won't next year either. It will depend on what the kids/grandkids...

Resident Mule Deer Archery - Holy Cross Wilderness

I asked my friend why he put us it for that unit. He said a lot of big bucks have been killed there in the past. Come to find out, they were mostly killed on winter range on late hunts that they used to have there, not on early high country hunts. Also, don't count on finding many deer above...

Have you ever shot an animal that had a previous wound?

I shot a bobcat while rabbit hunting many years ago that was clear full of healed over bullet wounds. We got a deer once in an area crawling with mountain lions. It had a big chuck of meat and hide missing on one hind quarter. We got a small four point buck once with its lower jaw shot off...

Resident Mule Deer Archery - Holy Cross Wilderness

I have only hunted the Holy Cross once on an early rifle hunt in September. Before the opener, we hiked in about 7 miles south of the Beaver ski resort. We saw a few elk, but no deer or deer tracks, so we left that area. We went to an area on the southwest corner of the unit and saw some nice...

    Hunting as you get older

I remember when you could buy a deer tag over the counter and it was good state-wide. You also got an extra tag for archery if you wanted. Now, the DWR has done their best to take all the fun out of it. You have to pick your weapon and pick the ridge you want to hunt and you can't draw a tag...

    Lightning strike kills deer heard

A guy I used to work with had a picture of a whole herd of sheep killed by a lightning strike on top of the Park Valley mountains in NW Utah. Best picture I ever saw with all those mountain maggots laying belly up.

    rabbit count ?

Yes, Mud Lake in the 80's. Me and two friends shot over 1000 rabbits in one day and a night on my brother-in-laws farm. When we finally froze out and went home at about 5:00 in the morning, it was 17 below. I took 4000 rounds of 22's with me and only brought back a hand full. The other two...

In Wyoming, if any bears over the quota get killed before they can shut it down they just subtract that number from the next hunt's quota.

WHERE WERE YOU IN 1982 ?

Living in my second home where I still live today. Bought the first one for $30,500 and the second for $50,000. Had three kids, plus one in the cemetary. Had hunted in tardville for 16 years and started hunting in Idaho and Wyoming about then. Could see over 100 deer from the house in the...

DEER HERDS -- TIMES ARE CHANGING

Wyoming has a small chance of getting a little better when it recovers from a pair of hard winters recently. Utah is a hopeless case. The population has increase four fold since I was a kid. That makes too many people for the deer to recover much at all.

Deseret Ranch Ut, Inflation gone wild…

Just think. There was a time when you could have bought the whole ranch for a mere $6,000,000. By the way, I drew a public cow tag there a few years ago. The way they handled it made it the worst elk hunt I have ever been on.

    It's not just predators

it is not just public land that is overgrazed in this drought year. I was just noticing today how grazed down our private pastures are right now. I have sold off 30% of my herd already because of a lack of feed and water this year. Hay production was down 60% so I will have to buy some at...

    Older Backcountry hunters?

I am 72 and still going strong, just a little slower than I used to be. The last time I backpacked 15 miles to our favorite wilderness fishing spot, it took a day and a half. It used to take half a day. On a recent elk hunt with my 42 year old son and 15 year old grandson I couldn't keep up...

Wyoming Region G poor deer hunting this year

I agree that G is worse than ever for big bucks, but there are a lot of little fellers there that could be good in a few more years. I think I will just bank points until about 2023 or 2024, but I am getting old and running out of years to bank points.

    End region G point creep!

I was working on my income taxes on this rainy day and saw that my state income taxes are $4,000 for 2020. If I moved a few miles I would be in Wyoming and save that $4,000 per year as well as beating the point creep problem be becoming a resident. Mighty tempting.

    Region G method of transportation

When I was young, we always camped at the end of the road and hiked in from there each day. That about killed us off after a day or two., When I got older, we started backpacking in and setting up a spike camp in likely areas. Now that I am 72, horses are starting to sound better all the...

    Wyoming Advice?

Most parts of G are pretty tough country for an old timer to hunt and after last year's poor hunt with the kids, I expect that it will be a tough hunt even for younger hunters this year. I will be 72 this season, and I have about enough points to draw G now, but I only expect to draw one more G...

Anyone use a travois to pack out an elk?

If you have a little snow, a plastic snow sled work great. We quartered and hauled out a 6X7 elk last year with one, all in one load. Just be careful not to get hit in the butt going down hill. I got nailed with the elk's nose and bruised my tail bone and gouged some hide off the back of my...

    Lightning Stories Anyone?

One night in our tent on an elk hunt in Idaho a lightning storm rolled in. We started counting the seconds between the flash and the thunder. It rolled in from the south and went 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0, then moving off to the north 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 as it moved away. The 0 second count strike was...

Wyoming Region G poor deer hunting this year

Wyoming has always had a deer crash every 5-10 years due to winter kill. It used to be able to bounce back after 3-4 years, but there used to be a lot less hunters too. Now, the killer winters seem to come more frequently and between the hunters and predators, along with heavy road kill, the...

How many of you kill meat bucks the last day?

I didn't draw any deer tags this year, so I didn't have to worry about it. I did help pack out three big Wyoming bull elk (a five point and two six points) that the kids/grandkids shot. They are better eating than deer anyway.

    Idaho is ruined

The problem in Idaho started 30-35 years when the fish and game director didn't want to pay for crop damage due to deer. He figured "no deer, no damages". His solution was to thin the herd. They issued doe tags by the hundreds in many units, and nearly wiped out the herd. It has never...

How many of you kill meat bucks the last day?

Not enough meat on a small deer to be worth it. If we don't get a deer, we just try a little harder on the elk hunt. I'd rather shoot a meat elk, and let the meat bucks grow another year or two.
