Anyone have any info on this unit, advice? Densities, trophy potential? General areas to look, pm me with anything you don't want to share on the open market. Not looking for honey holes. Going up to Gibbonsville the last week of the season. How are the wolves?
We were up there the same time, but only spent the morning and and evening there. Same report, though we did see a doe and 2 fawns. We moved down closer to Leadore and found a lot more deer there. The problem I see is that they close the roads that get you in the high country where I assume the...
Hey guys and gals I'm back. I missed last season due to changing jobs because of the pandemic. 1st hunting season missed in 23 years! I posted this in the Idaho forum and got no response. Hoping someone might have some info here.
Anyhow...changing things up this year and trying a totally new...

Think mountain goat country, especially in the early season. As high and steep as you can get that's where you will find the big bucks. Especially in avalanche chutes on East and not North facing slopes. Also it is very important to be there at 1st light and last light.
I managed to draw one of the capped resident cow elk tags in 45-52. Anyone have any advice on where the elk will be in November? Will they be on the Fairfield side or the Glenns Ferry side? Looking to put some meat in the freezer, but also looking forward to seeing those crazy huge monster...
Hey elkassassin,
I appreciate the thoughts and this may be the only song in existance that actually mentions the Owyhee Mountains by name, But Claude Dallas was a cold blooded killer that should have served a life sentence. He is no kind of hero.
I would have paid an untold sum for that nice...
Just got back from a hunt that could have had a much different outcome.
Elk hunting 2018
My buddy was only able to meet me at my campsite for one day of accompanying me on a late season bull hunt in Southern Idaho's Owyhee County. I had been there a day and a half already, and was excited to...
The rut happens every year at the same time. Because you aren't seenig it doesn't mean it isn't happening. It winds down at the same time each year. Weather has no effect on the rut. Snow on the ground simply makes the deer easier to detect.
God has equipped his creation to know when the...
Thanks for the helpful replies!
I was planning on taking the trailer all full of water thinking that keeping the temp above 50 would be plenty to keep the lines from freezing. You've talked me out of that foolishness! Thanks!
Looks like it's sponge baths and honey buckets for the next 7...
Heading up this week camping/hunting at about 6000 feet. The temp will be single digits some of the mornings. I have a 23 foot trailer with 2 slide outs. What precautions do you take for winter camping? I have never camped this late, this high.
Bringing this back up again as I am heading out Sunday through Friday. Anyone have any pics to share of bulls taken in this unit? I would love to see them! Don't be shy big or little lets see them!
I'm pretty sure you all know you sound like a bunch of Grumpy Old Men! Every generation of Music evolves and changes. Some changes are good, others not so much. Country music is still one of the only forms of music that actually expresses real emotions. Has actual harmonies, and a tune to sing...
This Hunt is getting close and I have this tag also! Just wondering if anyone has any pictures of past hunts that they might share on this thread? Would love to see any bull pictures!
Heading out to 46 this weekend. Super excited, first time with private land access! I wish the weather was more encouraging. Hoping for a little pre rut activity. Any advice on this unit?
Hossblur,
All of your points are dead on! I left California 21 years ago in large part because of the politics of the state. We lost a lot of hunting opportunity, not because of hunter indifference but because of voter referendum. When the vote came up for mountain lion hunting, what do you...
Having hunted without an ATV for the first 25 years of my hunting career, I know the frustration of having worked my tail off to get to a remote location, only to have some yahoo come ripping off trail, spooking everything within earshot! There is no chance I would repeat that. I've been tempted...
Some of the ATV forums recommend having a portable compressor and plugs on hand, sounds reasonable to me. The hard side storage sounds like a deterrent to thieves. It's not going to stop a determined Thief though. I will be hunting the deserts of Southern Idaho where it's a long way between towns.
Guess I came to the wrong place looking for advice. I always live by the rule, the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask. Apparently that rule doesn't apply here.
I finally bought an ATV. I intend to use it to save wear and tear on my truck and get me close to my hunting areas. I will still be hiking to the target areas of my research.
My question is:
The ATV will be alone for long periods of time, what do you do to prevent theft of gear or the machine...
Htoutdoors, great pics! I love when a plan comes together! It doesn't have to be a week-long Backcountry adventure to have a great hunt! Now it's your turn!
Deepcolor, awesome! Thank you so much for sharing the pictures! I love the smiles on those kids faces, I think the llamas are smiling too! Nothing like enjoying hunting with family.
Good luck on your hunt! I would love to hunt Eastern Idaho some day! Sounds like you will have some company on the mountain. Be sure to post some pics of the hunt!
Wow, congratulations!!! Great bull! Don't you love it when a hunt works out like that? What unit did you take him in? I'm thinking of putting in for a moose hunt!
Interesting thought! Mix it up if you're not seeing the deer. It's so hard to hunt the thick stuff, because when your in their bedroom they have all the advantages. They can hear you and scent you before you can locate them. Thanks for the input!

Come on guys and gals post em up! Big, little, bear, antelope, elk, deer, we don't care, we just want to se them! Be proud this is one of the best states for hunting in the country! If you have a story to go with them even better!
