Studies that show predation is not just weak and sick

I can say with confidence that the spruce on the Dixie, Cache, and Caribou National Forests were hit hard in the 90's with spruce beetles. I really don't value an assessment that says otherwise, even with a clever explanation about facts and that it was wet and cold. I saw the forest decay for...

Studies that show predation is not just weak and sick

Yes I'm biased, doesn't mean I don't have a point worth considering. Enviros have pitched a lot of baseless crap ideas that have needlessly caused a lot of problems for a lot of people and the environment. These should be called out along with their credibility. Somebody did say wolves...

Studies that show predation is not just weak and sick

Uh, and I don't buy wolves only kill the old and weak. That line was pitched in 1995 and turned to be yet another load of crap pitched by poker faced enviros who also have selective memory and will never admit that beetle kill timber can mitigated with logging, never consider that CO from...

Studies that show predation is not just weak and sick

Also, I thought the "sick and weak" argument died long ago. That was a major sales point when advocating for the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone. Who knew 75% of the elk herd was sick and weak? That's how much the population decreased in a few years. Wolf advocates have not...

Studies that show predation is not just weak and sick

The "weak" includes the fawns and calves. There is merit to both points-of view in different situations. Have your friend consider the population of moose in Yellowstone. It is less than 100, far less than carrying capacity and far less than historical numbers before wolves. It probably...

For all the bad management guys

That idea was tried for quite a while. Sell tags even if the b/d ratio was dismal. Although the ratios are much better now, the herd is still perfectly capable of a steep decrease independent of all the tag cutting. Your complaint was addressed, tags were drastically cut to improve b/d...

For all the bad management guys

That has more to do with favorable weather and b/d management than weapons being used. Hunting in the 80's - see hundreds of deer and maybe a yearling buck. Things bounced back in 2014 after some bad winters and the b/d ratios were helpful. Then we got a drought and it tanked again. It...

For all the bad management guys

I sincerely commend you for your efforts. Your actions have been consistent with your convictions. We'll live with the mess. The habitat projects didn't fix it. Tons of units didn't fix it. Cutting tags didn't fix it. Cutting dates didn't fix it. Cutting doe tags didn't. Coyote...

For all the bad management guys

It's way better than before when the b/d ratio was 5/100 or less. It's way more reasonable than just cutting virtually all tags except a few to go and target the very best genetics. Your ideas have been tried and did not work.

For all the bad management guys

All logical points, but your ideas have been tried. SFW made sure of that. It didn't work. Come up with some new ideas, just don't keep rattling off 15 years after it clearly didn't work.

For all the bad management guys

Can't believe people still have the energy to fight these things on this website. I've aged a couple of decades and the same people are still fighting about cutting buck tags, cutting doe tags, cutting dates, more smaller units, coyote bounties, cougar bounties, habitat projects and funding, on...

    DOZENS OF NEW CALIBERS/CARTRIDGES HYPE???

They sell what people buy. I can't get .303 savage anymore either. Have to wait until they make a batch and a friend calls me. Sometimes we bet wrong. There is still .270 on the shelves for the really old guys, just not 270 wsm.

    DOZENS OF NEW CALIBERS/CARTRIDGES HYPE???

The hype is this: 6.5 are outshooting the .308's in long range competitions. Hunters have tried it out and can't see any reason to shoot something else. I have a friend who has raised 6 hunters. He swapped every gun out for 6.5 in the past 5 years. I will not go back to anything else...

    Drawn for Beaver General Deer

It's not what it was decades ago and it's not what it was 3 years ago. Sounds like you will be happy with any outcome so it will be a great trip. I'd start high unless you have access to some lower farm areas.

    1) Can anyone guess who this monster slayer is? 2) Ace Hardware in St. George isn't near the sporting goods central it was 30 years ago, but there are still Teddy Riggs mounts in there worth dropping in for a visit. 3) I get the most out of Ridgetops posts than anyone else's on here...

    Future of Trophy Hunting

Maybe the article would fetch a passing grade in an English class, but there is definitely room for improvement in the clarity department. All that aside, the number of bison today is a lot more than 1000. We have a number close to that in Utah alone. There were some fun pictures, but I'm...

    Someone elses tag...

This is a nonsensical dig at the idea of considering opportunity in management. Party hunting was an ethical dilemma when opportunity abounded because party hunting was illegal at that time. It's hardly an issue now when opportunity is suppressed and every tag holder has a team of supporters...

    Older Backcountry hunters?

What I'm amazed at are all of the accounts of getting miles from a road. I can't get away from them. I pack into areas expecting to find seclusion and can always find a 4-wheeler trail. I can get maybe 3 miles tops off of a road before I encounter another.

    Jetson flying vehicle

In one regard, I completely share your sentiments. In another regard, we are so far past this addition of technology making hunting more unfair, that I'm completely unconcerned, I've hiked in roadless areas multiple times and got to a good spot just in time to watch an illegal 4 wheeler /...

    Utah’s DWR Proposals

That's genius. The expo would get the exposure and notoriety and respect that it has always deserved plus it would flush out decades of point bloat and transfer it to the Expo.
  36. J

    Utah’s DWR Proposals

Another idea is just convert all points into preference points for 3-5 years. There isn't a general hunt anymore anyway. People can choose between quality and quantity units. Offering both like they do now just jams up the pipe for both. It would flush out those with 18+ points in a few years...

    Utah’s DWR Proposals

Just announce that it will be gone in 5. Those at the top of the pile will have to get serious about drawing. They will think twice before turning in a tag. They might put in for the Paunsagaunt instead of the Henries. It could be terminated in a year, but 5-years would be a courtesy to...

    Utah’s DWR Proposals

60/40 or 50/50 or 99/1 doesn't matter. Max points is a myth for new hunters in any of these scenarios. They will not achieve max points within their lifetime. The concept needs to phase out over the next 5 years and be replaced with a system that is sustainable.
  39. J

    Utah’s DWR Proposals

    1) Here is a thought, if the DWR isn't going to hold a hunt, don't sell bonus points (there were 2 or 3 years where they didn't have a cow moose hunt, but they sold points.) That would help decrease point creep. 2) They need to get rid of the max point game. 60/40 isn't going to come...
