Would you send an arrow at this one?

I would be in the same situation as montezmarchery, I would have been hoping he steps forward and gives me a better shot. Then he would blow out of there without me getting a shot.

    How wide

I'll guess 26" but I could be off by a couple inches. I'm also not convinced he is a young buck. Could be an older buck without great antler growing genetics.

    HB 129

HB 129 isn't about reducing gun violence, it is about control. The governor and politicians behind this bill know this. If they really wanted to stop crime, they would be going after criminals instead of law abiding citizens. At most it will be a minor inconvenience to gun owners in NM but it...

The only lake I've fished in AZ is Powell. I've been making one or two trips there a year for about 30 years. Wayneswords has a great forum with information about fishing Powell.

2024 NR elk applications - special vs regular

Regular fee for me. Should draw with regular, so why spend $2000 when I don't have to. Others in my group had no interest in special fee. For elk, I'll probably only do regular in the future unless I'm applying solo or my group of friends wants to do special. Depending on how I do with other...

Thoughts on new Special license fees

It will be interesting to see the draw odds. I'll be interested to see how many people pay the special fee for some of the low demand hunts. There are a lot of hunters that can and will spend $1200 for a mediocre pronghorn tag or $2000 for a general elk tag.

Thoughts on new Special license fees

It is the way you come across when you make posts. You didn't have such a sharp edge in your responses in the past. I'm guessing you are just tired of all the whining nonresidents interested in hunting Wyoming. I'm not whining about the special fees. I just wanted to have a discussion to see...

Thoughts on new Special license fees

I knew I would strike a nerve in the original post with the comment below but probably should have left it out. "Sorry residents, but I think this extra $$$ will also make it harder to push 10% cap on nonresident deer, elk and pronghorn." That is just my opinion and you are welcome to...

Thoughts on new Special license fees

I don't see why I can't be an armchair quarterback. That is what this forum is for. Your right that the extra fee will make a 90/10 transition easier financially but still think it becomes less likely. How often does government raise taxes/fees and then turn around and say we don't need all...

Thoughts on new Special license fees

40% of the tags going to people with significant extra $$ will have some impact on the hunting pressure. Those that can drop the $$ for special will be more likely to higher a guide. I also think those are guys who are more dedicated and willing to hold out for older animals and put more time...

Thoughts on new Special license fees

That is true. The original intention was to have increased draw odds in the special. I do not think this will make a difference in drawing the higher demand hunts but will substantially help in drawing the lower demand hunts.

Thoughts on new Special license fees

Even though many nonresidents can afford it, $1200 for deer and pronghorn tags and $2000 for an elk tag is a lot of money. I'm sure that 40% of the tags will sell out at the special price for all the moderate and high demand hunts. Personally I'm sad to see hunting become more of a rich mans...

Buy toilet paper and wipes in advance. You won't be able to go to the store once you start your bowel prep. The cleaner your colon is, the less time you will be violated.

    Lowering Standards

I think some people are lying if they say their standards don't go down later in the hunt. For me, it really depends on the tag. I will admit that I have shot animals at the end of a hunt on multiple occasions that I would not have shot opening day. Most of the time I'm happy to go home without...

    Benelli and Browning shotguns

I've had a super black eagle 3 for about 5 years now. Great gun and light weight. I've put it through significant abuse. It does shoot high as designed and some guys don't like that. The only time I've had it fail to cycle is with cheap target loads when it was dirty. It has never failed to...

Articles of impeachment against NM governor

She should have been impeached the same day she wrote the unconstitutional order. With the way she handled COVID, I was surprised the was reelected. In hindsight, I shouldn't underestimated the stupidity of a majority of NM voters.

    Elk wounding question

I've seen blood through the scope after shooting animals on multiple occasions. A rushed shot at 400 yards and an elk isn't recovered isn't a big surprise. That elk could be dead close to were he shot it, could have died a mile or more away or is alive and well today. I watched a guy shoot at...

NR special draw license went WAY up...

$1200 for a pronghorn tag is crazy. Especially considering the how the pronghorn herds are doing in many areas of the state. I'm sure the special pronghorn tags will sell out in higher demand areas. Max point pronghorn units will stay max point for special pronghorn. I'm expecting many of the...

    Stand selection question

If you want to shoot longer ranges, get a fast twist 22 cal or 243 cal that can shoot high BC bullets. Even if it is only a 10 mph breeze, it is so much easier for me to make precise shots with my 6mm creed at 400 yards than a 223.

    Stand selection question

I have a model 12 in 22-250. It shoots 1/2” groups with a load I worked up. Bought it for $200 on a Black Friday about 8 or 10 years ago. I have 5 Savage rifles. The big thing I would caution you about savage rifles is the action for feeding and ejecting brass isn’t always as smooth as other...

    Stand selection question

JPickett gave you some good tips. I agree stand selection is very important and takes time to learn. My stand selection includes the following priorities. #1 Wind - won't even bother calling a stand if I believe the coyote can smell me before I have a chance to shoot them. Sometimes the wind...

Personally I would take JPickett's advice and just buy a Nightforce and been done with it. I have multiple leupold, vortex and nightforce. Montana is a fun hunt

As I said in post #57, limiting nonresidents tags to a specific unit or region could be a solution. I agree that you have no right to complain about quality if you are killing a buck at the end of the season, just so you don't have tag soup. I do think hunters that just want opportunity to...

    Montana is a fun hunt

Cutting nonresident opportunity is a reasonable thing to do. The state doesn’t want to give up the $$. If you cut the number of Nonresidents by 50% in region 6, I don’t think you are going to see significantly more mature bucks. If you eliminate all nonresidents hunters in region 6, then you...

    Montana is a fun hunt

That is the sad truth in MT. I spent some time looking at deer in a unit I was trying to draw while on a pronghorn hunt in MT in 2022. Congratulations on a successful hunt with your family and friends. Ignore the haters. Montana manages most of their deer for opportunity. Hunters that want different management should complain to the biologists that set the season instead of people that shoot deer that regulations allow them...

    I wanna play!

I'm thinking his is closer to 160" and don't think he would gross over 170". If you have a lot of experience with measuring bucks from this area or have his previous sheds, your estimate would be better than mine. I would have shot him with 3 of the 4 tags I had this year on the 1st day of the...

    Shed closure

There are several winter ranges in Eastern Idaho that are closed to all human activity. I think the biggest potential problem on the winter range are snowmobiles. There are still plenty of places to call coyotes in Eastern Idaho. I would agree that some of the winter range is over graze. Sheep...

    Shed closure

I have no problem with the shed season closure. If all shed hunters were ethical, this would be a nonissue. The best solution is to close the winter range to all human activity. A good example of this is what they do on a large area of the winter range in 60A.

    Push or Wait?

The terrain that I'm hunting in will be a big factor on deciding on how to pursue a wounded animal. It is is fairly open, I'm likely to go after it immediately because I'm likely to be able to find it and finish it off right away. I've unfortunately had to do this more than once. There is no...

That is bad news. Now that CWD has a foothold in Yellowstone it is very likely to spread to parts of Idaho and Wyoming that don't currently have CWD. any one wanna talk NR pronghorn with me?

Your a NR, go F yourself. Someone had to say it. With 3 points you will not be able to draw a tag in 2024 in a unit with large expanses of public land. You will probably need to build another 3-6 points before you can draw a tag in a unit with lots of public land. In my opinion, you should...

I did and it is as bad as you have heard. I probably saw less than 25% of the deer numbers I would have expected to see.
