New to applying in MT. ???

I am new to it to. As best as I can tell, as a NR that only wants a bonus point for a deer or a deer/elk I should wait until July 1st to apply for it? Is that right? Thank you

There isn't state legislator alive that will vote to raise his constituents hunting fees in order to lower the NR fees.

    Arizona bound

My wife and I will be in Benson in a couple weeks. Can anyone tell me any unadvertised spots where we may have a chance to view interesting wildlife. We'd really like to see a desert ram, but I am not sure if there are any in that area. Looking on the map I guess this area could include the land...

    Shipping cost for elk meat/horns

Use the cardboard boxes with styrofoam liners like used in shipping lobsters. If the meat is frozen, "two night" shipping works fine. Done that a few times including Maine to Oregon, and Maine to Nevada. No problem, and "two night" shipping will save over "one night".

    Shipping cost for elk meat/horns

Six years ago I shipped the butchered and vac packed meat from a bull moose. All the meat. Shipped for a hunting client that I guided here in Maine to his Denver area home. Two night shipping ...about $2,000.00 rings a bell with me. European mount of the bull was extra. Not sure what that cost...

Beatiful mount, great ram. I don't give a rat's ass where it came from personally. Perhaps Zim can moderate the "discussion".

    Moose hunt suggestions

    >Looking at giving up my Maine/VT/NH >Moose apps myself. After listening >to Bernie Sanders and watching >North Woods Law, i dont >think I could stand being >up there. Don't blame you, but Isn't he promising free tags, guns, and ammo to all? Maybe free trucks and free gas too!

    Moose hunt suggestions

I know non-residents that have spent in excess of $2,200.00 for extra chances on drawing a Maine tag. They were not drawn. Do not go that route. Over the last ten years I uhave repeatedly asked Maine F&W for the figures and success rates for NR's that purchase lots of chances....they have never...

    Bighorns for tourists..thanks

We succeeded in seeing some bighorns pretty close up. We spent a couple hours looking around either side of 70 in Georgetown. Finally came upon four of them feeding near a dirt road parallel to and upslope of the west bound side. A real treat for both my wife and I. Thanks very much to all of...

    Bighorns for tourists

My wife and I will be traveling in SW Colorado and NW New Mexico in early April. I no longer apply and will never be hunting Bighorn Sheep, but would love to see one. Is there any place this time of year where we might see a ram? Near road, or by hiking. Thanks very much

LAST EDITED ON May-05-14 AT 09:59AM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON May-05-14 AT 09:57?AM (MST) How would I know how much if anything Sen. Jackson (Democrat) was paid? Nothing is my guess. I am not from his district. I usually totally disagree with anything he says or proposes. But he has been...

Then what was the original legislation proposed for the 70 year olds? I was at the public hearing when that bill was first presented to the committee. To the best of my recollection there was very little discussion, no opposition from the public, and the Committee passed it along to the...

    More Outfitter Welfare

Just read the wording on the Maine F&W Dept website under "moose hunting". Any Resident applicant that turns 70 or over during the hunting year and has 30 or more bonus points is guaranteed to get a tag. Not too sure Zim, you'll have to straighten me out, but could this be interpreted as a very...

    More Outfitter Welfare

Hi Zim, Happy to answer you questions as best as I can. But first I have to clear something up. Guides and outfitters do not necessarily qualify to get one of these tags that are designated only for qualified commercial sporting camps. I am an independent guide, with no strict affiliation with...

A resident moose tag in Maine is $52.00. Non-resident: $585.00. Bull tags and cow tags are priced the same; that is, no discount for a cow tag. A resident can enter the drawing for $15.00. A non-resident can enter with one chance for $15.00; or buy multiple chances: Three chances: $25.00; six...

jm77 - Good point about my "trucker" statement. But I still believe that Maine's new program will be beneficial. It will only involve about 1% of the total bull tags available. Zim - Any Maine resident that's 70 or over and has 30 bonus points gets a tag this year; about 375 of them; that's...

    More Outfitter Welfare

There are about 4,100 total moose tags for Maine in 2014. 88 will be designated for sporting camps to purchase and disseminate as they see fit. The bull tags will be desirable and make this a popular program. A lot of them will be cow tags that go untaken by the lodges and will go back into the...

    56 inch maine bull

    >What did that bull end up >scoring? If you dont mind >me asking. Don't know, but the hunter expects to have it scored soon. I'll get back when he tells me. Any guesses? I think asymmetry will bring it down, maybe 185 is my guess. Fish & Wildlife Dept. tooth aged it at 5.5 years old.

    56 inch maine bull

The hunter told me this week that he is arranging to have it scored soon. I'll get back with the score when he tells me. He said he "green scored " it at over 200. But I don't see that. I see about 195 gross with asymmetry bringing it down to maybe just making 185. For reference I think the palm...

    garmin 450 gps question

Thanks alot fellas, I appreciate your responses. I've looked into this quite a bit, and compared the deLorme products to the Garmins, and settled on the 450T. Plus I think transferring the waypoints from my old Garmin Etrex Vista will be alot easier, too. Thanks again, Guy

I'm looking at getting a Garmin 450 or 450t. My question is: With a pair of gloves on in colder weather, will I be able to operate the touch functions, particularly the function of using the thumb & forefinger to zoom in or out. Will keeping the gloves on hinder this process? Thanks alot. Guy

    BH 209 ?

Hangfire - Cleaning depends on use. I didn't fire it on my last hunt, but had cleaned it, and dirtied the barrel with a squib load prior to loading. I do keep tape over the muzzle, and a red painted spent primer in the breech as additional seal. With the 209 I've found that paying strict...

    BH 209 ?

Let's see. I put my mzldr away loaded w/ BH209 last December. I expect it'll go off just fine next fall. BH209 does not attract and absorb moisture like some of the other fake powders do. I will fire the rifle and reload it previous to actually hunting with it next fall.

    Moose Bullets/Loads

Not appropriate for your rifle, but as devastating a kill as I've witnessed, spine shots notwithstanding, was with a .58 cal round ball. Another good but not overly impressive muzzleloader kill on a big bull was with a Barnes "X" in a sabot, in a .50 cal gun. For your gun I'd stick with the big...
