    ATV Gear/Set Up for Hunting

I would recommend a winch and tire plugs like have been mentioned. I keep some canned air for a tire or two. I like my setup with the plastic tote. Pre-pack, throw it on at the trailhead and go. On the way out, with a full camp and an entire bull is no problem. I can get a bull, camp and all my...

    ATV Survey

Each time I’ve called in lazy slob hunters for blatant OHV violations that ruined hunts, the warden was more than happy to swing by and issue tickets.

    Archery Elk Non-Res 22 Points

My "captain obvious" chart shows the number of archery elk hunters (resident and non-resident) in the field and their success rate. The "opportunity" units have the lowest success rates.

    Archery Elk Non-Res 22 Points

Last year, only 1 non-resident with 22 points drew a tag. I attached snapshots of where all the NR archery tags were issued. One of them has the odds at that point level, the other has the number of tags issued. They both look bleak!

They are dragging it out until after the non-resident tag sales happen coming up there shortly. Clever. FYI case #CR36-22-0866

    Pressure ………

I'll never take my kids out opening day. This year reaffirmed that decision. Instead, I glassed opening morning for my daughter's hunt. I was actually at the top of a subdivision. Glad we didn't make the 2.5hr hike because I could see 8 hunters up in the bowl we were going into. Looked like a...

    Back at it...

Congrats on getting back into it. I'd recommend just getting a bow press and learning how to tune and work on your own bow. Especially if you might have two bows in the house to maintain. Seriously, it's rewarding, very, very convenient and not that hard. Everything you need to know is on...

    Good ole Idaho

I agree NR should be a draw. I hunt solo but this really has to suck for folks that hunt as a group. Guessing the odds of even a pair of guys getting through for tags are low.

Only 17,490 people in front of me…and the line is “paused”. Does Idaho use the same company that publishes election results in Arizona?

    Extended archery deer

I totally get this reference now! I just watched one of those guys ramble on YouTube next to a replica rack and pose with someone’s deer at the end. I kind of recognized the deer because the guy who shot it raced up past me to a glassing point in August last year. Later that morning he showed me...

    Shoulder slap tear surgery

I have had 3 of these surgeries over the last 11 years. Take your time and you will be hunting. I never missed a season and they were all done about this time of year (for that reason)

Recommend Off-Road Tacoma or Tundra??? Looking Soon!

I have a 2021 Tacoma double cab off-road long bed. Just turned 5k miles. It’s definitely capable off road especially with the locking rear differential. The crawl control is fun. However, I hate the lack of power and miss the interior room of the F150 I sold to get it. I did tune the ECU and...

    Mathews V3 27....50th Bday present

Welcome back to archery! You will like that matthews. I switched over to a Vertix last year. IMy advice for arrows would be Easton FMJ’s. I think a general rule of thumb for arrow weight is 6gr/lb of draw weight. Use the manufacture’s charts to figure it out though. FMJ’s are aluminum over...

Selling non-resident Wyoming Party Elk Hunt, 14 point share

I wouldn’t be surprised if others are thinking about doing the same thing as you are. ;) Over the course of 13+ years, things change. Every Hunter goes through phases and some get to the point where a low odds OTC hunt is just as exciting as a decent draw tag...or a “low end” draw tag.

Idaho Unit 76 late rifle tips?

Yes they will break the rules. You will have camped in there only to hear the drone of quads and side by sides right at prime time. Especially during the deer hunt. Many will day hunt on their ATVs while staying in their comfy campers or big base camps...rather than riding in and camping per...

Idaho Unit 76 late rifle tips?

I've had the early rifle tag twice and the late rifle take once (over the last 7 years). Just hunt it like you would for archery. For the late tag, my best advice would to steer clear of the deer hunters and assume they won't follow the OHV rules. It'll be a fun hunt. Even during the late hunt...

    Salt For Deer in Utah?

It is NOT legal. In my opinion it will only improve hunting because the deer will remain on their natural browse patterns and stay visible longer.

Where to go for a euro mount?

If you can’t find anyone, look up some of the videos from Whitebone Creations on YouTube. That’s the method I follow and it works well. All 6 of my elk and a few deer have turned out great....and it’s cheap...so I can continue to afford the tags!

    78 Rifle Deer

I have turned in a handful of day hunting violators in the Diamond Creek unit. Really pisses me off to spike camp and do the hiking up to camp...only to have them buzz up and blow everything outta there. Wardens are great about coming up to issue a ticket. I keep the wardens number on my phone...

    SE Idaho Archery Shop

Since ships aren’t around every corner, I would suggest investing in the equipment to do your own work. It’s very rewarding and really it’s not that hard! Idaho needs a point system now

elkster123, 30 years is a long time to go without a controlled tag. Please advise exactly what tags you have been applying for during this stretch. Perhaps we can explore the draw odds, statistics and probability to come up with a new draw strategy that will break this unfortunate streak you...

    Yamaha TW 200

I had a nice TW but didn’t like the idea of riding it in rough weather loaded down. Also, I broke my toes riding the thing when I hit a rock hidden in tall grass. I even had MX boots on! That cost me a Book Cliffs deer hunt. Sold it and got a quad. I feel better about taking a kid on the back...

Big time baiting... should it be legal? And do you consider it hunting?

I'd like to see baiting banned for several reasons (off the top of my head). 1) The game is easier to pattern DURING shooting hours without bait piles. This was incredibly obvious when I started whitetail hunting. As soon as the baitpiles hit the ground, patterned activity switched over to...

Utah archery shops - quality work

I agree with the above. Suck it up, buy a LCA bow press and get after it on your own. Plenty of SOLID instructional videos online. Only reason I need a bow shop is to get an OEM part they the factory won send me.
