194, 196 Late Rifle or ML

I'm trying to get my app in order and am having trouble figuring out which hunts I should put as 1,2,3rd choices. Theres too many damn choices!!! Wondering if these two hunts are equal to eachother as far as quality and quantity of deer. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Steve,

The ml hunt will have fewer hunters and you get first crack at the deer. That being said you cannot use anything but open sights. The rifle hunt has many more hunters in the field, deer will be skidish, but you should be able to kill what you find. Not always the case with the ml. hunt.
Oh yeah, having a casino as your basecamp priceless!!

Wiz, i hunted muzzy elk last year, Oct 20-Nov 2. The late rifle deer hunt was on. I never saw a deer hunter. We saw several 24-25" solid 4 pts the last few days. We also saw a pig, 190-200 class buck 2 different times. A couple of other between the 24/25"ers and the pig. We were in 221. Odds are very long for 221 late but it'l be first on my app. They got more visible as the season wore on.......and we weren't even looking for deer.

Just my opinion but I didn't want to make the odds harder by puttin it on the post.

Hunter- I just finished putting my app together and submitting it with my Dad. We put in for hunts that are drawable for us. My Dad has no points so I'm using all of my 7 points for the both of us and we are putting all of our eggs into this years nevada draw. We didn't put in for WY this year so we can do the NV hunt. If we don't get drawn, hopefully there will be some left over Region D tags in WY. If not, I'm totally screwed for this years out of state hunt unless I pay for a voucher....and I don't have that kind of money. I thank you for your info. Good luck in all of your draws!

I hunted the late ML hunt last year and it was a hard hunt because of all the snow. If you draw shoot me a message and i could give you some pointers.

sagebucks, I'm curious about this area. Too late for this year anyway but how is the access with the private land? I know the area has gotten a lot of attention lately.

I had one of the late season ML tag in 2007, and conditions ended up being perfect. Lots of deer were up in the public land areas, even with the snow being very deep. Lots of areas to stay away from the small private land tracts, although last year some of the biggest bucks were down on the backyards. This tag be terrific if the weather hits just right. You draw the tag and then just pray and hope for the weather to hit at the precise time with no room for error. There have been years where ML harvest was 0%.

Tought tag to draw. I've been putting my son and myself in for this hunt for 8+ years, and niether of us has ever drawn. We've got a family house at Incline, so have a great base camp right in the unit, but can't draw the damned tag!

Its trickey there is a fair amount of access but alot of the areas that hold the deer are close to the houses aspecialey during the late hunts.
