221 elk info

I drew a spike elk tag for 221. I won’t have an opportunity to do much scouting this year with a new born in the house (plus fuel is a killer!). If anyone has info on places to start the search I would appreciate it. I can trade for info on deer, elk, antelope and sheep in quite a few units in the state (011-013, 181-184, 151-156, 72, 101-109, 61,71, 121, 213, 205)

That’s a tough hunt. I had that tag last year. Saw a few cow elk and one really nice bull but not a single spike. I only spent 3 days hunting it though. I would suggest planning on hunting it hard for at least a week. Lots of area to explore.

Thanks for the advice. I would wager a spike hunt is probably one of the toughest hunts in the state besides some of the depredation tags.

Find the herds of cows and you'll find a spike. They are always with them. Almost every herd I've seen in 22 has a spike running with them every year.

People who struggle with the spike/cow hunt are the people who don't want to walk and feel a meat hunt isn't worth the hike.

The hunt is during the rut. The spikes may still be with the cows, but in my experience hunting cows during the rut is that most are driven off. One year while hunting cows in late September I found a herd of 10+ elk that were all spikes bachelored together!

Ahhh sorry, I thought it was a late tag.

I got some great Info from PMs on peoples past experience in 221. Thank you all. Unfortunately, life commitments are keeping me from scouting this weekend before the opener as I had planned. Has anyone been in 221 this year and seen elk?
