I photographed this buck a couple years in a row.. He ended up getting poached the year I took this picture and I heard he was somewhere around 26 inches..At first glance he may seem 28 plus, but when judging these blacktails you must take into consideration their smaller heads and ears.. There aren't too many TRUE 30 inch blacktails running around..This is the biggest I've ever seen...
I mounted a 3x3 in 2009 killed in Ca A zone (Monterey county) that was 29.2 inches wide, I'll try to post a picture. The most amazing thing he was lab aged at only 4 years old
LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-13 AT 10:14PM (MST)[p]That is a giant buck! Buck of a lifetime!
30 inch bucks in Oregon are extremely rare. I believe that I have only seen one blacktail in person that was legitimatley over 30 inches. I rattled em in, I did not believe that I truly saw a deer that was that wide. I thought that my eyes weren't seeing it right. Cartoon like. He was just a forked horn.
I then spoke with two people that were hunting the same area and they also saw this ridiculously wide blacktail. They agreed that this deer was 30 inches wide. 2 years later a guy killed a buck within a mile from that area that was 30.5 inches. It was a forked horn.
