So after getting skunked last year, I returned to the scene of the crime and had success!!! My friend came in from Washington and this was his first elk hunt. We spotted the elk bedded down about a mile away, we picked a route for the stock and began the 2 hour journey, accross draws, up hills and occassionally checking the animals. We closed to final 200 yards and figured on finding them just over the hill, onto all fours we went and creeped up over the crest to see 2 cows and a calf up and moving towards the creek, we were at a near panic trying to figure where the bulls were (there were 3 legal bulls in the herd)...something told me to look to my left and there he was...staring right at us about 75 yards away!!!!! The first shot lunged him and the second shot broke his back...Eric saw the other one about another 100yards up the hill and lunged him and he was down in the snow about 300 yards away... absolutely incredible...mine is the top one, a 6x5 (not really big but the tweeked antler on his right side made him cool) and Eric's was a 5x5 with 11" brow tines!!! these were the first elk ever for either of us...we did it on a 3rd season, over the counter on public land doing it ourselves!!!! what a frikin' sweet trip it was!!! hope ya'll enjoy the photo's and story

Thanks Brian, that did the trick....

Eric's was a 5x5 (small whale tail) but perfectly simetrical.

Nice elk Al. Sounds like you had a great hunt. Scott and I are going to give it another try next year.

You guys did really well...Congrats!!! I met a BUNCH of other hunters that didn't fare so well in either 3rd or 4th season thanks to weather/forage conditions this year. There were alot of nice fat elk staying very well hidden from alot of hunters this year. Again.....great job and thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone, it was a fun hunt.
@trooper- hope to see you guys when you drive through town, I'll have a cup of coffee for ya regardless of time!!

@sole- it was indeed a tough hunt this year, warm weather and swirling storms kept the animals high and bunkered in. We found this heard at about 11,000 feet elevation!!!

..the wife is not at all excited about the "skullsoup" I'm making this weekend when I do the Euromount!!!

take care,

Al
