NR with 20 points burning a hole in my pocket. Thinking about a muzzle loader elk hunt in 40. I know there is a ton of private land. I used to always read about BiggerStaff outfitters, but haven't heard that mentioned lately and their website hasn't been updated in years.
I'm typically a DIY hunter, but now that I'm getting older the help of packing one out is sure appreciated, not to mention the private property issues.
In several threads I have read about Mike Lawson's operation. Anybody hunted 40 with an outfitter please chime in with advice. Thanks

I am doing the same thing you are thinking about doing. Been collecting elk points for 21 yrs. Mike is most likely booked out a year or 2. If your going to go unit 40 don't wait get on the list now.

Trophy Class Outfitters(Mike Lawson) and Biggarstaff are the two bigger ones that are actually based in the unit. 2V is a Ranching for Wildlife that you probably aren't looking for because you have points. If you Google unit 40 Outfitters you will come up with 3 or 4 more that say they hunt unit 40 but I don't know what their deal is. I don't know if they have ranches or hunting public.

If you want to see recent trophy photos for Trophy Class or Biggarstaff look at their Facebook page. More and more Outfitters are using their Facebook page for photos instead of their website. They have to pay someone to update websites and any Facebook person can add photos to a Facebook page. If they are booked two three years out they don't have to do a lot of advertising

As I said on a different post I've hunted 3rd season elk and deer with Mike. I've been going on guided hunts for over 20 years and he is certainly one of the best I have hunted with. He was born and raised on the ranch and still lives there. He has guides that come back year after year and know the property and he has a lot of property. He doesn't overbook hunters.

Mike is probably booked two three years out. Biggarstaff may be also.

As you can tell from my post I highly recommend Mike Lawson.

I looked at Mike's website. Is he really charging $7,500 for a guided elk hunt?

Some are getting north of $10,000. Check some surrounding states and you will find $12,000 + in the best units. A Yukon moose hunt will be around $15,000 plus transportation. A stone sheep hunt will be around $40,000+

In NV you can hire some of the best elk guides for under $6k.

Who's getting $10k to $12K for guided hunts on draw tags in surrounding states? I'm not doubting, just curious? I'm guessing they're private land hunts or auction tags?

Private land, nice lodges, landowner vouchers and other plus services.
If landowner vouchers and extremely nice lodges are part of it I can see the $10+ price tag for certain people. What I can't see is $7,500 price tag for the average (280 to 310 inch) unit 40 bull being killed by the outfitters in that unit. I currently have 20 elk pts and will just hold onto them for another 15 years if I have to!

$7,500 but your hunting 13,000+ acres of private so there is value to that over an outfitter only able to hunt pressured elk on public and competing against the other public land tag holders...

I have two friends that own ranches up there and it is insane the number of big bulls that are in that unit. If I owned land in that unit I would charge $20,000...one on one...and would get it....I think. LOL

Hey, Coloradoman, did you ever hook up with Kevin Weaver regarding your rifle?
Hope everything worked out well either way!

Thanks for the help everyone. I booked with Biggerstaff for 2021. Assuming i draw the muzz tag with 20 points, if I dont hopefully 2022.
