The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s proposed recommendations for deer, turkey, javelina, bighorn sheep, bison, bear, mountain lion, population management, and limited-entry permit-tag hunts for fall 2022 and spring 2023 are available for review at www.azgfd.gov/huntguidelines.

The hunt structures and recommendations were formulated based on the hunt guidelines approved April 1 by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission.

All questions or comments about a particular game management unit or hunt can be emailed to [email protected]. The public also is invited to call any of the department’s regional offices statewide and ask to speak with a game management biologist. No formal presentations are planned.

The proposed hunt recommendations will be presented to the commission for its consideration during a public meeting April 15 at department headquarters in Phoenix. The agenda will be posted at www.azgfd.gov/commission.

There was discussion at one time about restricting NR archery deer tags to 10% of the total tags sold. Does anyone know if that died or is it still being considered?

Are you asking about 'discussions' on the internet or among the folks at the AGFD? ;)

In units with draw permits for archery, the 10% NR rule is already in effect. I haven't seen anything to indicate a cut for the OTC tags, however.

This is all I could find that addressed OTC in the 2022-2023 guidelines that were just approved. The guidelines for 2023-2028 are pretty much the same at this point. Neither mentions implementing a cap for NR OTC permits.

What are limited entry hunts on page 44? If these are those tags they added late last year they have added elk, antelope and goulds turkey

Isn't the quota on the OTC archery hunts new?
There have been several units during the fall seasons that have had draw permits only. These were designated after they accounted for 20% of the harvest, etc. as written in the rule. Thus, when it's a draw, the 10% NR cap kicks in.

So far, there are no such restrictions on the winter hunts, although a 10% cap on NRs is supposedly being examined.

These were the ones with a draw for 2021; the rest were unlimited OTC. The regs for the 2022 deer seasons are not out yet.

It appears they're possibly setting these up like those special hunts they offered this past year. See this thread.

So this looks to be the G&F expanding on the Super Raffle principal by creating & offering some of the best permits in the state. Looks like G&F realized just how much extra cash they can make by doing their own G&F sponsored raffle, without the headache of dealing with the critter organizations. These are separate from the regular draw & separate from the Super Raffle which requires that all proceeds go towards habitat improvement projects for each species. I doubt the $$ raised will go back to species specific habitat projects but will go into their general coffers.

When they offered the "special hunts" late last year, you had to know they were going to expand on it. It will only get bigger as the years roll on. A crapload of extra $13 & $15 dollar applications will yield a sizable fortune. Pretty soon instead of 1 permit for each, it will be 2 permits, then 3.........

Yup. Quite obviously meant to raise lots of money with little effect on the critter populations.

I have a likely silly question. Next to non-permit archery tags, I see “threshold”. Is that related to the number of animals reported harvested which would result in a unit going draw?

Thanks

No, it's sort of a quota figure to shut the season down early. Kind of like they do with bear when a specific # of sows are tagged.

Thanks! I see on Mt. Lion/Bear how that works, but don’t see anything on ADFG for deer—likely because it is a new proposal correct? There is an OTC archery unit I typically hunt, but has low threshold, so not sure if it would be worth planning for this Dec…

Yes, that is something new for deer. Everything to this point has been curtailed by the number of permits. I suppose they figure this will provide more opportunity than going to a definite draw, but it is more a PIA, as well.
The regs should be out in a couple weeks.
