Well we messed up and didn't apply for Montana. So now the big question.....

Has anyone ever received a big game combo tag, deer or elk tag via the Alternates Lists? First come first serve sounds like but no details on MFWP website yet.

Yes, when they used to be posted on the website as available. When they went to a ranking draw I was never able to get a tag that way.

I believe you would have had to apply in the original draw to be eligible to enter the alternates list. I’m not certain that’s how it works but that’s what my memory tells me.

Yes that is correct

Are you sure??? The alternates list is all the people that drew their tags but opted to turn them in for a 80% refund. It seems odd that people that turned in their tags would be the only ones eligible to receive the turned in tags??

You had to apply for the alternates list in the past. People that applied and didn’t get a tag had preference over people who didn’t apply in the original drawing. If you didn’t apply you were not on the list.

Correct.

Maybe they’ll change it this year, but doubt it. The alternates list is only reserved for those NR’s who applied but did not draw a general tag.

A few years ago MT gave NR’s the option to automatically return the tag and get you 80% of your cash back. If you were successful in drawing the general tag but no elk permit and opted out of the tags if you didn’t draw the permit, the new system would automatically take back your general tags and allocate them to someone who wasn’t successful drawing any general tags.

The guys who are not successful in receiving one of the re-allocated tags, are given special treatment, ie they get to enter the alternates list and still have a small chance to receive a returned tag later in the year. The guys who didn’t apply at all are waiting for next year.

Only way this could change is if there are more returns this year than people on the alternates list. With the virus, you never know.

Ahhh I got ya. I spoke with someone via email and all they said was that you need to sign up between May 15th and June 30th to get on the alternates list and that you can only sign up as an individual.

Then I spoke with a lady over the phone and she made it sound like it was first come first serve. As soon as the returned licenses come in, they go down the names on the alternates list and hand out licenses. Didn't mention how they determine who gets what. I assume there would be general deer, general elk and big game combo tags that are possibly returned? I also looked all over the webpage and found one spot that said alternate licenses are changing for 2020 and check back at a later date. Guess we'll see as we get closer to May 15th.

It appears they are gonna allocate returned tags as they had in the past. You sign up for the alternate draw. They draw and you get a number 1thru800 or whatever and as tags are returned people are contacted. I was in the 80s once and received a deer tag years ago. There were no leftover tags as I understand this year.

Hi if you didn’t apply for tag you shouldn’t be allowed to apply to alternates list. It isn’t fair to those guys that applied and didn’t get tag that really want to hunt Montana.

You can apply if you didn’t originally put in but you automatically go to the bottom of the list. Preference is given first to those who applied and didn’t draw. Don’t make the mistake of applying for deer combo in the alternant list if you originally applied for the deer/elk combo. You will be put to the bottom. You need to apply for the alternant list the exact same way you originally applied or you go to the bottom of the list.
