As you said:
1) Shot placement is what makes the difference between tag soup and a full freezer.
2) Caliber/bullet weight & type.
3) Distance from the shooter to the game animal. I leave the long shots to those who have practiced at the extended ranges and are confident in their equipment & abilities to pull it off. I am not one of those people.
If we screw up on any one of those three decisions, bad things happen!

It’s funny how that’s an abstract concept to some. My typical reply for the elk caliber discussion for example is “ I kill mine with a pointy stick”
