Welcome to the nanny state…..we look for you even if you aren’t lost. And then we trash you in the media because you had the nerve to turn your phone off.
That is exactly my take-away from that article. If they wanted 'rescued,' they could have made their own call for help.

That said, it would have been a good idea to at least call 'home' and 'plain what's happening.
 
Like to know the age of the person repeatedly calling the phone. Maybe they only pass thru small service windows, they'd receive a text when they hit one of those windows. Neither end of that attempted communication sound to bright.
