area 71

Anyone with any info. on what the deer and elk hunting is like in area 71? Thanks

I hunted 71 in 1999 - 2002 on private land the abutted public near the Groundhog reservoir north of Delores. I hunted the first or second season each year and did well. Lots of Deer and Elk but nothin' big. Its an OTC Elk unit with lots of San Juan Nat'l forest. There seemed to be a lot of pressure on the public land and the Elk get hammered pretty hard as they migrate lower throughout the seasons. Occasionally they kill some big deer down low around Delores late - 3rd or 4th season. I think the world record typical is from that area so the genetics are there. I assume its like most areas - if you study your maps and aren't afraid of burning a little boot leather you could get away from most of the competition. The terrain isn't particularly steep in most areas and access is good - maybe too good. GOOD LUCK. C.C.
