barrel lengh?

This might be a dumb question, but how much does barrel lengh effect performance? Such as feet per second, I have a .270 with a 22" barrel that i handload for. I've been trying to get a 130 to move at or above 3000fps, but can't do it. Could I with a longer barrel? 24" ? I'm also thinking of getting a .243wssm to reload and I'm wondering if a 26" barrel would give me better performance over a 24" or a 22". How much does a couple of inches matter? Can you go too long? Would a 26" be excessive?
Any insight on any of this will be greatly welcomed.
